Rockstar sequel rumored to put players in control of a handful of characters, return to the sunny part of the West Coast.
Individual Grand Theft Auto releases have traditionally put players in the role of a singular protagonist. A recent report suggests the next entry in the series may provide a few different playable perspectives on the game's story, while returning to familiar territory with its setting.
Yesterday's announcement of Rockstar's latest provided nothing more than a logo, but citing a "source familiar with the game," Kotaku reports the game will purportedly use Los Angeles as its city of inspiration and will feature more than one protagonist. It would not be the first time Rockstar turned to LA for ideas, as the West Coast metropolis loomed large as a clear muse for the fictional California microcosm of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
While GTAV could be the first title in the series to tell its primary story through multiple characters, the idea isn't entirely unprecedented. Grand Theft Auto IV focused on the story of Niko Bellic, but subsequent expansions depicted Liberty City from the viewpoints of two more characters. The Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories PSP games also returned to cities from the main console versions of the series, but with new characters driving the story.
This is not the first suggestion that GTAV could return to an LA-inspired setting. In March, reports linked a casting call for voice roles in an interactive project codenamed "Rush" to Rockstar's next game. Those listings described a motley crew of California characters, including the return of GTA: San Andreas character James Pedeaston.
Whatever the setting, it's likely to be revealed soon. The first GTAV trailer is set to be released November 2.
Wow thats great news ! In a game like GTA creating the world must be like 4/5 of the work after you achieved that its easy to create many stories in it.
@BoabDreeps Also I was not suggesting that they should censor games, I was suggesting that you are the reason to why they censor them, implying that you do not have the level of maturity required to properly enjoy a game such as this.
@BoabDreeps People do admire the scenery of the game. I never used cheats in GTA IV, it made the game boring and unrealistic to me. You may play games just for the mindless violence and while I do like it myself, I also enjoy the story, the characters and the setting of the game and that is why I want to see the trailer. The fact you called Zelda Tame, shows your immaturity. Whether the game is good or not you are refusing to acknowledge it because it does not have the level of violence that you must adhere to. Some people like the enjoy every aspect of a game.. some people enjoy just running around without a care. If a gamer only buys games that have a certain level of violence then they miss out on a great deal of amazing games and I am not talking about Zelda.
@eddieham13 For a start, you can climb down from that moral high-horse. And the petty insults: "people over 5...your the reason why they censor games..." Very good mate. That's me put in my place. Why do they put all that content in the games in the first place? Cos they know it sells, and it sells because gamers like it. So if the new GTA comes out and it has a beautiful setting with lovely characters, but you can't blow sh1t up or run folks over...what do you think the reaction will be? "Oh it's fine. I just like driving around admiring the scenery." Yeah, right! Anyone who says they've never loaded up the weapon cheats on GTA and started dishing out a bit of random mayhem is a liar. Thank God for games like GTA, that take the risks and give us the mature content. It would be boring if the most we got was a tame bit of Zelda style sword swinging.
@BoabDreeps People who enjoy gaming care.. also people over the age of 5 care. Its not all about blowing stuff up, your the reason why they censor games... they think people are not mature enough, and going by your standards they are right.
Setting? Characters? Who cares? So long as you can blow stuff up and shoot folks, what does it matter? So long as they don't try to emulate anything from that gaming turd L.A. Noire, I'm confident that they will produce another GTA masterpiece. Personally, I want an urban sprawl. Street battles online in GTA4 were hilarious.
I found the leaked footage on YouTube.Kinda like Miami , i don't know http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDn1AopWRmY
what they havent done that would be interesting is if they set the game a little bit into the future...say...10 yrs? just a thought i am really interested to see what they do with this game rockstar hasnt dissopointed me yet =)
november 2nd needs to hurry up and i think that the multiple characters are a good idea. I would like a character like claude speed from gta 3 to play as. but i do think the setting is a bit like san andreas. I proberly know they use childrens toys to thing involveing drugs like it said in the start/select episode. I JUST CANT WAIT!!!!
you know what would shock the world. if they did a full sandbox layout of TEXAS. I mean from the megalopolis of Dallas-Fort Worth to coastal cities of Houston, Galveston, and Corpus Christi and the Tex-Mex land of El Paso, San Antonio, and Amarillo. You got woodlands in east texas, desert and oil fields in the west, ghost towns all over. there's so much you can mimick: gangs, sports, colleges, politics, illegal activities, "illegals". And if they made it a MMO would also be dope as well. Also would like Midnight Club with in-depth role playing elements of GTA
Even if it's one city, I just hope it doesn't have that "bland" feeling that GTA4 had. GTA4 didn't really do it for me like the other GTA games did. There just needs to be more character customization options and things to do instead of just walking around looking at buildings. That's what made San Andreas so great. There was just so much stuff to do in that game. Not to mention the myths and easter eggs. I'd like to see those return too.
Why go back to an old setting. I'm sure it would be fun to visit with an updated engine and all that but where is the innovation? If I'm going to pay x amount of dollars on a game I want it to be new.
Multi characters? Bad idea. Rocks tar has a talent to describe 1 perfectly! Why they need more?? lA is interesting... They will use developments from LA Noire:)
I thing it could be a new vice city because they made 5 liberty city games if they really were making an other San andreas that would be there secret weapon towards marketing sales in gaming right now but thats just my opinion.
here's the thing every one is missing san andreas was not just LA! it was LA, San Francisco & Los Vegas with a lot of real estate in between so yes i am for a new san andreas which is a state not a city. the cities in san andreas are Los Santos, based on Los Angeles, San Fierro, based on San Francisco and Las Venturas, based on Las Vegas. so please stop saying its just los angeles because it is not.
@underoath83 I would love to see a GTA London as well. Read my previous post, I was basically talking about how rockstar needs to do a game changer...that would be great because it would not necessarily stray too far from the beloved GTA formula but the setting and feel and look etc would be enough to reinvigorate the series. Snatch would be a fantastic source material for the game. Heres hoping that maybe a developer in the united kingdom will get there heads outta there butts and do something like that already.
I don't know about the rest of yous guys, but I was kind of hoping for something different. With GTA going the route of a mobster SIM, I was hoping they would try and explore a litte more. I don't know, hate me all you want but I hope they really do something special because while every game has been great, 4 left me with mixed feelings. I find myself not liking how it's tooooo realistic sometimes, and find myself looking over the fence to gameslike saints row. I'm not trying to troll I'm just saying I felt like they kind of didn't advance much from San Andreas to GTA 4. Now don't get me wrong, I sound like I hate the series....far from it. Just critiquing a beloved franchise. Ballad of gay tony was actually a step in the right direction so I am by confident in Rockstar.
@R0cks0l1dd Who says I dont mean the last hundred years lol. Yes, that may be an exadurated somewhat, but it will still be a seriously epic game.
I kind of want Vegas, or even Boston I think would have been cool (Irish mob sort of thing), but I don't think that's going to happen.
South - Wack, Chicago - Wack. There's only two states in this county = New York and California. Everyone knows that...get with it
LA is beyond played out, give us CHICAGO already! OR at least somewhere interesting that we haven't done before, I'm down for anything but a repeat. I would even be down for London or Paris, just no more damn New York, every sandbox does it and it was lame after the first 5 times.
Don't mind the idea of playing as a few different characters, but set in L.A...... . Been there, done that. I'd like to see a completely new city, that hasn't been done before and it's not like there isn't plenty to choose from: London, Chicago, Tokyo, Paris, Toronto, Washington. I wouldn't even mind seeing it set in Vegas, Miami, or San Francisco again. LA just seems a bit cliche and has been done in other games. Time for a change. Hope the missions are a lot more varied than in GTAIV. I thought the missions in Vice City & San Andreas were much more fun and I didn't really like Niko Belic as a character.
to be honest i prefer having 1 protagonist, makes you feel you've been through a lot from start to the ending cutscene. well since the release of the recent games Rockstar gave us i can say but 1 thing. In rockstar we believe.
@Bibimaghoo 89 years left until the end of the century. Pretty early to be saying that, don't you think?
@PitchBlack999 I must be on a very small rock in the middle of nowhere, because the one i played on my pc ran smoother and better looking on my pc than it ever did for my consoles. That was without mods as well. With mods, the fun factor just sky rocketed for the pc version. Not claiming console versions ran poorly, just nowhere near the rate of my pc (i do have a very very nice PC though).
@Yams1980 Hah i dont know WHICH rock on WHICH part of the earth you stay in? but the Console version of the game was MUCH MUCH and MUCH better than its poorly ported sibling on the PC...get your facts right sister
I prefer to play as one character. Yakuza4 had 4 protagonists (and was awesome) but I still feel a little detached every time there's a switch :(
I don't see why so many are against recreating London or something similar. It's the only city from the original games (and expansions) that hasn't been remade to this point. The original GTA had Vice City, Liberty City, and San Andreas in it; all of which have had 3d open world recreations. I'm not even going to count GTA 2 because it was just some random place called Anywhere, USA. I think it would be ideal to use the one that hasn't been redone yet. It was the only one that used a real city name, but they could always change it slightly. I'm thinking Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels or Snatch in a GTA world. Basically, it would be like The Getaway, but better because that game was very mediocre. We all know every GTA is quality, so no worries there.
What if they just remade San andreas everyone loved that game and many still play it today they should remake it and make it more over the top, or at least use the formula that made that game successful and expand on it.
hah gta again on a console. can't wait to drive around in sluggish 20-30 fps graphics. good times to be had
