GRID 2 gets May release date and preorder bonuses

Upcoming racing game gets myriad preorder offers alongside May release date.

Upcoming racer GRID 2 will be released on May 28 in North America and May 31 in Europe, developer Codemasters has announced.

The release date arrives alongside myriad preorder offers at various US retailers. Customers opting for GameStop get the GRID 2: Turbo-Charged Edition, which dishes up two DLC packs: the McLaren Racing Pack and the GTR Racing Pack.

The McLaren Racing Pack plops a McLaren MP4-12C GT3 Special Edition into the in-game livery, alongside a special online event and two new routes on the Brands Hatch GP circuit. The GTR Racing Pack delivers a Nissan GT-R SpecV road car plus daytime variants of the five Yas Marina circuit routes.

Meanwhile, Best Buy is giving out the IndyCar Edition, which hands players the keys to the Dallara IndyCar and the IndyCar Pace car alongside two new routes around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Oval Circuit.

Amazon US, on the other hand, will provide the Head Start Pack, which buffs up the garage with a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 GT and offers discounts for the game's car upgrade store and a bonus on Codemasters' social platform RaceNet.

Codemasters also announced that anyone who pre-orders GRID 2 at UK retailer GAME will receive the Brands Hatch Edition, which includes the McLaren Racing Pack and Head Start Pack.

"After four long years, Grid returns not just as a fast-paced street racer, but as an online experience that hopes to rank among the very best that gaming has to offer," wrote Mark in his GRID 2 preview last year.

GRID 2 will be released for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. For more information on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

I have a question. Will be able to manage our own team? That was one of the greatest parts of the first game. Buy cars, change the pattern and number, get a teammate, and trying to win the most money for your team so you can defeat the big teams (especially Ravenwest). Without this feature, this Grid 2 wouldn't be a Grid game. I remember winning epic races with my OWN car and my OWN teammate finishing in second 30 seconds ahead of the competition... Good times...

@speedcrysis  Since Codemasters does not sell a retail PC DVD disk in the US any more, Steam the only place for us US PC players to go to buy a newly release Codemasters game, unless you try importing a euro version DVD disk. But right now, Steam don't have GRID 2 yet to pre-order. GIRD 2 missing derby racing thou! :(

Can't wait for this.  Grid is one of my all time favorite racing game.  NFS has been sucking big time lately.  So glad to see Grid making a comeback.  Will be keeping a very close eye on this.  Could quite possibly even be a day one purchase for me.

No cockpit view, don't forget.  This will flop big time.

bignick217
bignick217

@FighterforJC If it's like the first Grid, then yes it will have full cockpit view.  Grid 1 had 4 different view points to choose from.  Cockpit, Full Front (no car parts seen), Hood (as seen in video) and 3rd person behind car (NFS style).  Don't judge a full game from one video.

No cockpit view, no buy.

And why again with the awful DLC policy Codemasters?, i just don't get it, you guys seem to be going backward on the way they publish their games. If any of you bought Dirt 3 on the PC you might remember that the game launched on Steam (with GFWL as DRM by the way) but they never released the DLC or the Complete Edition on the Steam Store so you are forced to play an incomplete game or get the extra content via the Microsoft Store that never does sales for DLCs on PC. The worst part is to have this bunch of cars that actually show on the in game menus and you can never drive unless you buy them.

@jmr1986I just played Grid 1  with cockpit view ...actually cockpit is one of the best things about Grid 1 to me .no cockpit no buy....

I really want this game.  I can't stand all this pre-order and DLC crap though. Like the game doesn't come out for almost 5 months.  You can't put that all in the game at this point.

Guys,

I didn't play Grid 1. I am thinking about this. Can anyone tell me Grid 1 is arcade or racing sim??? or can you compate it with some other racing game like NFS:Shift, or Burnout UB, or Dirt???

OnionGulch
OnionGulch

@asifah30  GRID 1 hit the sweet spot between a an arcade racer and a sim. For those that wanted GRID 1 to be more sim, you could turn all the Assists Off. Touring car and derby racing online with 12 players was great fun until the online servers got turn off for the PC and PS3 versions. Jury still out if GRID 2 will have the same magic of GRID 1. Codemasters making major changes to GRID, have to wait for a demo to see if the magic still there. GRID 1 demo blew me away and I place my pre-order back then in 2008. No pre-order this time.

skyplaya

@asifah30 It's between arcade and Sim. You could compare it to NFS: Shift, but I find Grid much better especially the controls.

@skyplaya

Arcade+Sim, just like NFS:Shift.....I am defiantly getting Grid. Beucae now a days I am playing NFS:Shift and its realy addictive and fun.

Plo_Koon_basic

@skyplaya @asifah30  The first one is and was a must play. The first one had cockpit view which was sweet. But this one apparently does not.

@Plo_Koon_basic

Yes cookpit view is one of the best view I feel in racing genre. I really enjoye cookpit view in NFS:Shift and if it is in Grid then I'd like to play it. Is it confirm that Grid 2 doesn't has cookpit view???

I hope they end up putting cockpit view in the game not necessarily because I want it but a lot of people are threatening to not buy the game if it isn't included which will make the online community go south fast.

acerx7

@criminalscum87 I wanted the cockpit view. Love playing the first Grid like that felt great, but when they announced its removal kinda bummed out about it

xsonicchaos

I'll buy Grid 2 under (ironically) 2 conditions: no gfwl and must have at least 1 good distinctive feature over the first one or other racing games. A story would be nice, but I'm not willing to bet my hopes on that. I also don't mind if it's arcadey. The graphics are pleasing, I must admit that, but that's not enough either. I'm simply not buying another generic racing game or something shallow like a racing sim wannabe. I have enough of those. Also, multiplayer emphasis doesn't cut it. So they must come up with something new and appealing to make me throw money at them.

These retailer specific and pre-order bonuses in general are so stupid that I refuse to buy any game now that have them. Might still play them tho.

So, they could include all that stuff on the disc but they chose to leave it out o purpose to suck more money from customers? That's horrible. No wonder a lot of people wait for the price to drop and/or buy the game used to save some money.

I always thought DLC was supposed to be extra content made after the game's release to extend replayability, taking content that should be on the disc and selling it separately as DLC it's nothing but dirty and dishonest business practice.

OnionGulch
OnionGulch

@FSgamer The pre-order bonus are on the disk, you just won't be able to unlock them. Loore from Codemasters said they will offer all the pre-order bonus packs later, in one bundle. But Codies have not said if they will charge players to get this bundle or give bundle as a freebie about a month after release and create some goodwill with the GRID community. Will Codemasters do the right thing when it come to the pre-order bonuses?

OnionGulch
OnionGulch

@FSgamerA correction to my last post, Codies said this today at GRID facebook page:

"There's been a lot of confusion regarding the pre-order bonuses for GRID 2. Just to confirm that this content is NOT present on the game disc and will only be available as a separate download."  So I posted this comment:

Chuck Purplefortyfour @Official Daniel "While it is likely the pre-order bonuses will appear down the line, it is not likely that will be on day 1." But that the $50-$60 question. It look like Codemasters is selling us only 90% of GRID 2 at release day ( 93% for those that get one the pre-order bonus ) and then with Codemasters track history with DLCs, will charge the GRID community another say $10 to get a bundle of all the pre-order bonus. If this is the plan, can not Codemasters see why people are upset? Or will Codemasters do the fair thing and release the bonus pre-order packs for free about a month after release date for GRID 2?
