Gran Turismo 5 update and DLC detailed

Price of racing sim drops to $39.99 as free update reduces load times, supports more steering wheel peripherals; DLC to include new vehicles and tracks.

Last week, Gran Turismo series producer Kazunori Yamauchi sent out a vague tweet concerning a new update and downloadable content for Polyphony Digital's PlayStation 3-exclusive racing simulator Gran Turismo 5. Now, Sony has offered official word on the matter, detailing the update and DLC on the PlayStation Blog.

The new update for Gran Turismo 5--which is said to be the biggest free update for the racer yet--includes a number of new features and gameplay changes. It will offer new interiors for all cars in the game, reduced load times, the ability to save during a lengthy race, and the option to adjust weather conditions.

Additionally, the update includes revisions to the game's Photo and Shuffle modes, offers full support for Logitech's GT5 and GT7 racing wheels, and gives gamers the 2011 versions of 11 NASCAR vehicles. Unfortunately, Sony did not give a specific date for when the update will roll out, saying only that the patch will arrive "in the next few weeks."

In addition to detailing the update, Sony offered details on the new DLC headed to Gran Turismo 5. According to Sony, the unnamed and unpriced add-on will include new vehicles and tracks, as well as "some additional surprises." Like with the update, Sony did not affix a release date to the DLC. However, Yamauchi's original tweet noted that the content would be released the week after the update rolls out.

Finally, Sony announced that the official sticker price for Gran Turismo 5 has dropped to $39.99, effective immediately. For more on the racing simulator, check out GameSpot's review of Gran Turismo 5.

This is pretty cool. I don't really see what all the fuss is with Forza 4. It just looks like 3 to me which was pretty cool. Unfortunately where Forza is a Microsoft exclusive and Microsoft will not support Logitech wheels they will always be a pretty arcade sim to me. You can say all you want about only so many premium cars, damage etc but in the end GT5's physics just feel better and with a good wheel you cant beat it. JMHO I have both the past Forza's and GT's. Just like Gran Turismo better, sorry.

Can't wait to see what the new car models and tracks will be. I hope Infeneon Raceway in all it's configurations makes a return and can I get Watkins Glenn in there too as a new world track. How about Spa-Francorchamps or Silverstone? I also miss so many tracks from GT2. Red-Rock Valley, the Seattle Circuit one, SS-Route 11, and what was it called...Apricot Hill Raceway? Heck, I still remember that awesome soundtrack..."Dragula" by "Rob Zombie" and "Paranoid" by Garbage. Ahh, the memories!

Glad to see this is on the way. This has got nothing to do with Forza 4. This is just PD doing what they said they were going to do which was finish the game in 1 year from release date and they are ahead of schedule considering all they have been through. We wanted it finished or not, we got it unfinished. Kaz is listening to peoples request and trying to honor them. Not too many games get that kind of support these days. Thank you PD for your efforts. I'm sure I will get Forza 4 by Xmas. GT5 2.0, GOW3, BF3, and Uncharted are on my radar for now.

@ tagzskie "It is just a right time to release that update since forza 4 is comming.. They do that because of fans and not because of forza, i believe polyphony care about their fans (gt fans i mean)" Which one is it? Is it because of Forza or it's the right time? Even you seem confused in your rush to criticize my comment. I'm not trying to "call you out", but they didn't mention anything about an update until about 2 weeks ago. Kind of petty in my book, and I'll admit I'm a petty gamer.

As a person who is not a gigantic racing fan, but do like a good sim every now and then- i just picked up GT5 and plan on getting Forza 4 when the price drops (possibly soon, if there's some kind of after christmas deal on it)- I'm going in without console bias, but looking forward to seeing which I like better. I haven't played a GT since 3 and haven't played a Forza since the original on the old Xbox.

thank you kazunori yamachi first... but, we want more features in this update and the DLC...like... 1-more premium cars...like..bugatty veron..supra..ETC.. 2-improving AI opponent's...car crashs... 3-more races..more challenges ..more endurance races 4-D1 GRAND PRIX challenges and their cars like blitz..toyo..and other teams.. 5-access to stealth cars dlc and make it for free cause it is an old DLC.. all these to refresh the best racing game ever made..!! yahhh..it is the real driving simulator...

Well at least the open cockpit standard cars get the "new interiors"...all the closed cockpit interiors are blacked out just as they are in GT PSP:( I'm curious about the improved physics and AI. Are the AI cars finally going to get off the rails? Can we adjust tire pressure? Yay, multiple setup saves are back...why were they missing in the first place in a racing sim? The weather setting looks pretty cool and interesting. Oh boy, we also get a new opening movie...why are you wasting your time? There is still more to fix! Well this is one step in the right direction but still too little too late. I'll give this try but I don't think this is enough to win me back. http://www.gtplanet.net/gt5-spec-2-0-dlc-details-standard-car-interiors-replay-controls-new-cars-new-tracks-more/

@FallenOneX its not like they make it 1 day - 1 week to do that!! If that updates is so easy to make, im sure polyphony include that in gt5.. I think they do that earlier than u think (maybe right after the release of gt5 since many fans disappointed??), It is just a right time to release that update since forza 4 is comming.. They do that because of fans and not because of forza, i believe polyphony care about their fans (gt fans i mean)

@warhawk-geeby The old review didn't do the game justice then, and it sure doesn't do it any justice now. Justin didn't even mention half the features the game had, and even outright lied about certain things. If they're doing a re-review, then it better be a different reviewer.

I know it's going to be supported with this update but I have been using stick and clutch(when the car isn't to quick for me) since day one with G25. The fact that we PS3/PC gamers can use whatever wheel we like is great for us and sad for the Xbox's. I really wanted to try out Forza but the wheels are either pants or more expensive than the one I have already forked out for. It's a mega game and with all the online events and continuous free updates we've been getting there hasn't been a better supported racing game on a console. AND if Seb Vettel wins the championship this weekend in Suzuka we all get a Vettel Red Bull to boot!! Polyphony are treating us well people! Still want a liana and cee'd though. :-(

@MEDzZ3RO Here here! I wouldn't normally agree with re-reviewing games, but considering the amount of things that have now changed the old review wouldn't do it justice. Good words pal.

@SolidTy -- Amen; the age of nickel-n-diming DLC is an age I am not looking forward too. I will enjoy my Forza 4, but GT5 is great about free updates and free cars, so there's plenty of room for both in my collection. =)

Offline Gran Turismo 5 was terrible.....but I found out why I love it so much is that I found the right racing community that keeps us all pushing and trying new vehicles while still racing our beloved old ones. When people say GT5 is no different than GT4 I agree to an extent...but if you don't test the online at all and not try to meet the good racers (whatever racing style fits you) then its never going to be fun... Forza wins in offline mode (for me personally) But GT wins my everyday mode (for the awesome friends I made from it) Not to say this can't happen with Forza...I know of some really good people that take their racing seriously in Forza also.

I jumped ship from GT fanboy to pro-Forza after Forza 2 got me to try it and Forza 3 pretty much sealed the deal, not sure if this is going to win me back, but these are some nice changes, especially the mid-race saves and reduced load times. Hoping they'll add aftermarket brakes again. Just doesn't feel the same without them. There's definitely a difference between stock brakes and racing grade brakes.

FallenOneX

Not that GT5 was bad game by any means, but they must really be feeling the heat from Forza 4 to finally be adding all of this, especially now. I think that both games are great racers, but the comparisons will never stop.....

XxSUPERSNAKExX I still think GT5 its better than Forza 4 even without the update! ********************************************************************* Forza 3 is better then GT5 by a mile. You don't even need to compare it to Forza 4. The update will probably give people the content that should have already been in the game before it was released. I still have my copy of GT5. It's been collecting dust after playing it for 2 weeks straight. It really wasn't much different from GT3 & 4.

MERGATROYDER

@raydawg2000 It doesn't matter if they grossed the entire amount. My post was to point out that they did indeed already make profit at that given time. That was the gross income netting after only a month of the games release. Given it has almost been a year since GT5 was released, Sony/Polyphony could have possibly pulled in those numbers.

crossdudu

Considering GT5's history, it's smart not to give an ETA.

"Unfortunately, Sony did not give a specific date for when the update will roll out, saying only that the patch will arrive "in the next few weeks." Well, looks like Gamespot once again fails to do any research... Yesterday it was confirmed that the update would release on the 11th october.

It's nice to hear that they are finally finishing up an unfinished game. But I still have my doubts about the quality/hype. When they released GT5 as a final version, I lost all respect for the franchise. I still credit it for creating a driving sim for the masses with a believable realistic physics model, but it is very clear the competition has learned from the best and have now outpace the original. The only way the GT series can once again lead and become an honest "The Real Driving Simulator" is to start over from scratch. The biggest problem I have with GT5 is it still feels like GT1 and has focused too much on QUANTATIY and not QUALITY. I know this update is free, but stop and think for a second. If it took PD 6 years to release garbage, do you really think they are going fix and make a revolutionary improvement in less than one year? I don't think so. I'm hoping for the best and sure hope the GT franchise pulls it?s head out it's a$$ and quit relying on the legendary "GT" branding. -I hope the ?new? interiors are not the same as the PSP version, but probably will be. -I want the new tracks to really be NEW and not just the previous GT tracks labeled as ?new? to the PS3 -DLC needs to be free?I?m sure there is plenty of room left over on that Blu-ray disk. -PLEASE , PLEASE, PLEASE FIX THE SOUNDFX FOR EVERY CAR!!!

I think a Gran Turismo 5 re-review is in order. Gamespot have always said if necessary they will, these updates make the game vastly superior to the game we got almost one year ago. It's fair to say almost all of the issues critics disliked seem to have been addressed.
