Sony announces sell-in statistics for Polyphony Digital's racing sim; series sales vault to 61.41 million.
The bumpy road to release for Gran Turismo 5 came to a head November 24, when Polyphony Digital's hotly hyped racing simulator finally made its way to the PlayStation 3 behind rave reviews. Now, two weeks later, Sony has announced how well the title has fared commercially.
Sony today announced that Gran Turismo 5 has "sold" 5.5 million units worldwide. The "sold" figure is actually a sell-in number, meaning Sony has shipped that many copies to retailers, not consumers.
Geographically speaking, Gran Turismo 5 was most popular in Europe, where it shipped 3.56 million units. The racer moved 1.25 million copies in North America, 550,000 units in Japan, and 160,000 copies in Asia.
Additionally, Sony announced that the Gran Turismo series has shipped 61.41 million units since zooming onto the racing scene in 1998 with the original Gran Turismo.
Gran Turismo 5 features close to 1,000 vehicles on more than 70 tracks in 20-plus locations. With a massive budget of $60 million, it is also an official licensee of several major racing circuits, such as NASCAR and the World Rally Championship.

@luna_chanfui Yes i did actually. It's kind of a logical thing to do. If you were going to vote for someone, wouldn't you want to know what they're plan is???
@Ex-DarkBlade Well, Yes and No. I played some MMO and the Gameplay was addicting but never Fun it as some Whoa moment but that's about it. Ive played CoD 4 for about 3 pretiges the gameplay was somewhat addicting but never really fun.(just 2 example of many) You ever played Vanquish? the story isn't really good, let's not talk about the Voice acting..But the gameplay is alots of Fun, Same with UT,TF2... Some games are Fun, Some are addicting, and some are damn boring/bad Only a few manage to have Fun and addicting gameplay, and to me this game isn't one of the few.( It might be addicting, but it's far from fun)
@SoNin360 ya, that's make you one of the "3 weeks' barely 1 mil" that can't see things against the "2 days' 3 mil" that can see things. High Shipping = high demand. Are you bad in maths and logic?
my god this review is so borring i was day dreaming while listen to it or maybe because the game is borring i don't know.
I expected a higher number in japanese sales. Considering the fact that they love cars, especially the GT-R(there a lot of GT-Rs and Skylines in the game)
"550,000 units in Japan, and 160,000 copies in Asia" Man, is Japan a new continent? LOL. Its pretty normal that Europe have higher numbers, racing its in their culture, you know, North Americans are good in making cars, but they don't have such a tradition in racing, compare DTM, WRC, Formula One with Nascar and Formula Indy.So its pretty normal these HIIIIIGH numbers, they love racing.
@luna_chanfui No... I don't see anything. Well, unless you are trying to say that more sales should equal a higher score, then no, I don't see anything.
@dahum20 Not necessarily true. If a retailer doesnt sell the games they normally have a contract which allows them to be returned to the publisher. However seen as though the game has been out a few weeks I expect the retailers predicted sales are probably pretty accurate and they wont need to be returning any.
well weather it's shipped or sold, the most important thing is that sony sold those copies to retailers which means that the profit goes to sony & the developers of the games.....thats the most important thing......you know shipping that many of copies shows that the game has HIGH demand from retailers meaning HIGH demand from customers.
yes 'Shipped' doesn't mean retail sales... but then again how many copies of shovelware is 'shipped' and ends up in a bargin bin? Just because something is shipped doesn't mean its sold. NOTE: this doesn't mean that the game isn't any good... it could be the most fantastic game on the market... doesn't changed the fact that being 'shipped' doesn't mean sales... 'shipped' is just weasel words to make it look like the game is doing great in sales.
$60 million , mickey mouse compared to Final Fantasy game project :-) LOL 100 billion Yen compare that to $60 million and it is pocket change. They should have spent another 60 mil and make the game faster to start and the home page needs to be reworked. Waiting for every page to load is getting boring, at least I get to take coffee breaks while the tracks load. I guess they forgot to QA the program in the real world. But why should they spend the money to QA when they can get 5.5 million beta testers for free and make money at the same time.
@CHAMPION6171994 Did you really buy a big title game after reading reviews and news? MW2 is a good game and it bring special visuals effects and it is FPS revolution that MetalOfHonor adapted n adopted it badly. For those said MW2 is bad is because they'll vomit and headache after playing FPS games. When a lot of people go for games/movies/songs it means they're GOOD at some point. If you read review then buy games sorry to tell again that you're not a good gamer.
@luna_chanfui No i just see stupidty considering that MW2 sold plenty more than any previous game and made over a billion dollars yet it sucked ass. Sales don't make games, becasue so many people will buy into the hype without even reading reviews or thinking strait.
I drive a stick shift in real life. I own both Forza 3 and GT5. I use a clutch when I drive so my game HAS to have a clutch. Forza 3 HAS a clutch control. Forza 3 wins.
LOL.. so biased I've read this article. BTW I've found this: In two days GT5 sells 1.8 Million copies. http://www.vgchartz.com/article/82843/gran-turismo-5-sells-18m-in-two-days-worldwide/ In 3 weeks Forza barely broke 1 Million copies: http://www.vgarabia.com/2009/11/21/forza-3-sells-over-1-million/ yet GS gave GT5 8.0 while Forza3 9.5. Guys, Do you see something?
@jimmybrasco ..Really?...Sony scared to release SALES figures? How the $*** does Sony or any other company know how much copies are SOLD. All they know is how many copies are SOLD TO RETAILERS- "shipped". And that is the only figure that they can produce.
lol at 'rave' reviews - a disappointment - especially for a game like 4/5 years in the making with the numerous delays it had. And why is it that Sony only ever states items 'shipped'? its such a misleading statement. Are they so scared to release the actual sale figures because they know that it isn't selling that well/selling to their expectations?
I'll try to do my best to set things straight on the Forza vs Tourismo fight. I owned Forza 3. It's awesome, the graphics are definitely good, and the sim is amazing. I now own Gran Tourismo 5. The game is fun as hell, the graphics aren't as good as the fanboys are claiming, since the shadows look like ass, the reflections on the cars body's can be so bad you don't really know what they are supposed to be reflecting, But the sim is equally amazing, if not a bit better than Forza. So in the end, it really comes down to preference, or the more intelligent choice, owning both, so that you can really enjoy the options. Obviously it's a waist of time for me to wish fanboys would just grow up, or find something better to do, but that's not going to happen. By the way, don't say it's the tv causing the issues, since I've got a super HD 120 hz model, and I can see every detail in the games, so Graphics go to Forza, Sim is close but I'd lean to GT, and the quality of work done on the cars again goes to Forza, since all the cars there are HD instead of only 200, with the rest looking blurry. That's the facts, not the hype.
@GodGundamNT1 If you are going to make that argument, then it is not only gamespot sucking Microsoft's penus (by the way, WTF is a penus anyways?), it is also almost every other magazine out there. Dude, it is ok that you liked the game, but more people found Forza III to be better, deal with it man. Don't diminish the hard work of someone else (in this case Turn 10) just because you have certain preferences over certain others. Saying that Forza got good reviews because everyone is biased towards Microsoft is slapping the developers and their (extremely) hard work in the face. I say this as an indie game developer: MAKING GAMES IS HARD, RESPECT THE TRADE EVEN IF YOU DISLIKE THE GAME.
I wouldn't feel the need to get GT 5 if I only had Forza. I wouldn't feel the need to get Forza if I only had GT 5.
@glaceya The gaming world could also exist without 360... Then all you'd need is a PS3 and a Wii. In fact now we have Move we don't even need a Wii any more!
@CHAMPION6171994,,, My cousin owns an X360, I saw Forza3, I think the graphics of Forza3 very cartoonish, I tested it in a store GT5 game,,, GT5 is very beautiful ... next week I buy my GT5.:) Note: you think someone will buy an X360 to play Forza3 which is less than GT5?
@icekids If you had not bought GT5 then how do you know its better than Forza or Need For SPeed?????????????
@ Mustangooos that is the 3 that I have. and GT was the only game that I thought I was missing out on. but with this release, I am now free of any ps3 desires because I have Forza 3.
who really needs GT5 when there's Forza 3. and it just proves my point.... the gaming world could exist w/o ps3, all we need is a WII, a 360 and a blueray player. im jus saying......
@blackace, everyone has a different view on gaming. Critics are not always right. Some games that critics say are not that good, but they turn out good. I don't give a **** to Gamespot's review of this game. Gamepot's reviews are correct a lot of times but not always. I waited for this game a long time and now it's here. I am gamer who doesn't look at flaws in a game but the amount of entertainment. All I want to say to you is that just keep your opinions to yourself. I am tired of Forza 3 lovers, I know Forza 3 is nice and really I do want to play it but I have no Xbox 360. Can you please leave us, GT5 lovers, in peace.
$5.5 Million Dissapointment... ;) for $60 Million budget in the making GT5 only get so-so reviews on most site(s)
Its not close to 1000 vehicles its actually 1031 and 71 tracks at 1080P 60 fps and 16 racers ONLINE. I have my collectors edition copy, well worth the money and the game is GREAT despite the rather less than informative gamespot review that seems rather biased towards sucking Microsoft penos. Great job Polyphony Digital and Sony, now that the game has released lets hope they are working on their next project.
@frankj22 I tell you what...the last time a game sucked me in so bad was when I was playing Final fantasy X for 5 hours a day when I was 14 years old...I'm 19 now and I should be studying for finals -_- It is a great game even though there are a lot of haters on it...The only Mainstream GT game I haven't played was 3.
@dsswoosh "It's not an accurate way to measure true consumer sales." Surprise surprise, I never said it was. At most I've said "guesstimate", which isn't to be taken as 100% spot on. This whole article isn't about consumer sales, but how much Sony has earned thus far with GT5. Sony SOLD 5.5 million copies of GT5 to retailers, and so earned whatever profit those 5.5 millions gave. That's all. You want consumer sales? Wait for those numbers. That's not what this article is about, no matter how much people want it to be. Wait for the article related to consumer sales if you want it that much. @supertom221 Sony shipped an unknown number of copies to those retailers, based on estimates regarding pre-orders and other factors. Those retailers saw how people were buying the game and ordered some more accordingly, giving a total of 5.5 millions shipped almost 3 weeks after launch date. The number isn't all that much higher than actual sales unless retailers are ran by total idiots. Initial demand was estimated before the launch date. After launch demand is estimated with initial sales, meaning the number we now see (5.5 millions) is the total between those two estimates. So it's not a total shot in the dark as you're painting it. 3 weeks after launch is good enough to have a feel of how well its going to sell, so it wouldn't have gotten to 5.5 millions if it wasn't selling that well.
Sony is the only one who looks bad posting "shipping" numbers instead of sales. They don't impress much.
@glaceya First of all, Forza 3 is not a sim. Forza 3's main selling point was that you could basically photoshop your car. I've played both. Forza 3 is outstanding but not an authentic racing sim. With that being said I rather play Forza 3. GT5 is just too authentic for me.
