God of War returning to PSP

Ghost of Sparta will be Ready At Dawn's follow-up to its 2008 award-winning portable installment, Chains of Olympus.

For years, the PSP has routinely finished second-to-last on the NPD Group's monthly US game sales report. According to analysts, one major reason for the portable's slow sales is a lack of regular top-tier software releases.

Today, Sony Computer Entertainment announced it was bucking the aforementioned trend by bringing one of its flagship franchises back to the PSP. The US branch of the first-party publisher revealed God of War: Ghost of Sparta is in development at Ready at Dawn, the Irvine, California-based studio behind the 2008 PSP hit God of War: Chains of Olympus (see video review below).

Due out "later this year," Ghost of Sparta will feature an all-new storyline set between the PlayStation 2 games God of War and God of War II. It will follow the series' protagonist, the ruthless Spartan warrior Kratos, as he assumes the reins of power as the Greek god of war after killing the previous title-holder, Ares. Over the course of the game, various parts of Kratos' backstory will be revealed, including the origins of his scar and tattoo.

The Ghost of Sparta announcement comes one month after Sony announced the last console installment in the series, God of War III, sold 1 million copies worldwide. Two weeks later, the March NPD report showed the game had sold 1.1 million units in the US alone in just two weeks.

I can say that God of War: Chains of Olympus was one of the best games I ever played on the PSP. I gotta say that there aren't that many hits on this portable console, but there are some games like Tekken 5 or 6 and GoW:CoO that I couldn't stop playing. Lookin' forward for God of War: Ghost of Sparta, I hope it will be at least as good as Chains of Olympus was ! THE GODS GOTTA PAY FOR WHAT THEY'VE DONE !

I guess it has always been about: "SHOW ME THE MONEY!" for RaD studios. These guys stated after CoO they were not going to develop another Sony game criticizing Sony for not being bold... or not taking risks... I can not remember the exact words, but I read/saw the article here in GS. Hope fully they have ironed their differences with Sony in order to make a Better, longer campaign... CoO was great but TOO short for the price.

Lol I hope this is as good as Chains of Olympus because I haven't finished it yet and it's awesome.

I remember that back in 2008, when I buyed my first psp 2004, it came with god of war : chains of olympus. A very interesting story, a hell of a gameplay, voice acting, combat and pretty much everything you would expect from a portable console game. I think that this game, as halo and street fighter reinvented the hack 'n slash term, and got a well deserved spot in video game history month. God of war : Ghost of Sparta is expected and will be a best-seller for the playstation portable console, and I mind buying the 3004 series for a much better gaming experience. One of the reasons this will be a best-seller is that it caught too many fans from god of war 3 fever, and we will see an increase in terms of psp buyers, and a much better profit for ready at dawns studios. Way to go guys keep up the good work! Kratos will never die

I knew there was a reason I didn't sell my PSP, maybe with this kind of PR other franchises like Ratch & Clank will feel the need not to be out done and make another. I can dream can't I!!!!!

newhighscore 5 pts

lame. quit wasting great titles on handhelds. just scrap the psp already and devote your time and money to the real breadwinner (your console). THERE SHOULD BE NO MGS OR GOW GAMES ON THE PSP! i feel so ripped off havin to see my fav franchises dummied down onto a handheld. I know some of you are hyped, but just think how much better these games would be if they were on your ps3 using the full blu ray.

The PSP just keeps getting better and better! Guess I'd better get GoW III before this one comes out.

MGS Peace Walker, new Ace Combat, and now GOW. THE PSP IS GETTING BETTER GAMES! FINALLY! Now all they need is GTA San Andreas stories with the FULL city (Test Drive Unlimited did it, so can rockstar) and I'll buy THAT for $100!

Awesome news! day one purchase, don't let the PSP die, give us a Resident evil game too!!

blancobo 6 pts

These are GREAT news!. But a warning to Sony and Ready at Dawn: last PSP title, was great and interesting but insultingly short. Let us hope this installment is as huge as a PS2 God fo War game was. Considering the ease of development for the PSP it should be rather motivating to develop a top notch hard core title that the huge PSP installbase will most definitively enjoy. Will be thrilled to download this game and play it in my PSP Go!

Just when I think it might be time to get rid of the PSP, another GoW game comes along to change my mind. I'm a big GoW fan. Chains of Olympus was a great addition to the franchise and the PSP library. Ready at Dawn did a great job and this builds confidence that Ghost of Sparta will be bigger and better. But that's like adding frosting to a cake that's already been frosted. _

I love GOW, but jeeze... 5 games of basically the same formula? Not to mention GOW 3 was easily the weakest of the bunch. Hopefully this will get back to the old ways... killing wave after wave of enemies, not kill 5 skeletons and a cyclops, watch cinematic, repeat...

@payne6705 - so exactly ur proving my point, he kills everyone on earth lol! thats the type of charactar that he is!he kills everyone!

@dRuGGeRnaUt hey thanks for the mod since you know it wasn't a spoiler since even the developer admitted that what I mentioned wasn't even a VITAL part of the story or game. It was in fact a trick to the player information Game Pro issue 261 pg. 61

Gelugon_baat 399 pts

The God of War IP is too good and lucrative for Sony to let go, despite the finale of God of War III.

CreatureRising 5 pts

Perfect :) I need another GOW game

Awesome! Just what the PSP needs. 8)
