SCEA's Peter Dille confirms Santa Monica studio's acclaimed action adventure reached platinum sales milestone "in the first couple of days."
It would appear as if God of War III is turning in a herculean effort at retail. As part of the MI6 marketing conference in San Francisco this week, Peter Dille, who serves as SCEA's senior VP of marketing and PlayStation Network, confirmed that the Sony Santa Monica-developed action adventure sold 1 million units "in the first couple of days." The game achieved high critical marks upon its debut exclusively for the PlayStation 3 on March 16.
Dille did not indicate whether God of War III's sales figure pertained to the global market or was limited to North America. The publisher had not responded to requests for clarification as of press time. However, the God of War franchise has a multimillion-unit-selling history, as the first two PlayStation 2 installments have combined to sell in excess of 8 million units, according to the LA Times.
God of War III marks the conclusion of Kratos' current story arc to bring about the fall of Olympus. As in previous installments, the visceral gameplay sees Kratos dismembering, decapitating, eviscerating, mutilating, and otherwise doing grievous bodily harm to a variety of mythological beasts. For this installment, gameplay also emphasizes fighting on monolithic Titans and mounting enemies, as well as gaining new weapons and additional attacks.

@johnryandaplin you dont have to play halo for several hours to get to know microsoft's masterpiss, ;)
@pav50 That's because the "Duty Heads" are lemmings. To paraphrase Jeremy Clarkson, if you put "Call of Duty" on a plate of sick they will line up to buy it. This is typical GameSpot. God of War III does some pretty good numbers and they always have put the adendum on "Oh but it's still not that good!". Then the groupthinkers latch on and start saying "yeah, it's not that good". Before you know it gets repeated enough times and opinion BECOMES "fact", and the truth is lost. GameSpot, fair and balanced.
GOW3 looks like a great game, but i just read the news on the 360 page that the heavily critized MW2 dlc sold 1 million copies in the first 24hrs
has the everlasting war between machshot and the truemagusX1 over?? i personally think you should become friends guys because both of you are hardcore fans(don't like the word fanboy, it's so annoying) but the thing is that machshot is a mass effect fan and turemagusX1 is a GOW fan and i really think you should talk on MSN or something and criticize each other all day since that out of every 4 or 5 posts i see @truemagusx1 or @machshot which means that you two spend so much time on the internet especially you truemagusx1 because you @almost everyone; anyway i don't know why there should be a fights over consoles?? we gamers play with games not consoles so no harm when you want to purchase a console for a certain game(s)..me i'm a PS3 owner but i'd like to go right now and buy a 360 because of splinter cell convection. keep together guys
@ cactusman1990 - I agree. GOW in the "Big in Japan" article is doing ok, but it's not in the top selling title or "runner up" in Japan. Although in the West, it should rank alittle higher.
PS3 has 11 million users to xbox's 18 million users. Decent sized margin between them but there are more PS3 owners now than you'd think.
only thing holding back its sales numbers is it's console. :( i'm sure it's a great game, but the ps3 user base still isn't that large. i know it's selling very well in japan, but i'm not sure the japanese are into this type game.
the first two games did 8mil combined lets face it guys as great as the game is the sales wount reflect that its just too hardcore its not for the mass market
Why is it no one on here can ever just talk about the game and leave it at that? Instead they have to take it to the next level and take shots at each others grammar and the whole "fanboyism" issue. Seriously, if you can't just stand up and walk away from the computer and get over yourselves, then I think you need to re-evaluate your lives, this is a gaming website after all, not ******* Jerry Springer. Congrats to GoW IIII and Santa Monica studios. I've yet to play the game but I'm looking forward to when I can.
I love how everyone rates my comment down just because I said that if they port it to the 360 I will gladly buy it. I dont have the money for a PS3! People act as if just because I dont have a PS3 and I want this game to be multiplatform so I could get it, I am automatically a 360 fanboy who masturbates to Master Chief all day.
don't worry machshot. he's just a troll and enjoys making ppl angry. magus, just drop it. be the bigger man, since according to you you are.
@MachShot Hahahaha, now all your doing is taking personal potshots at me? Why? Because you have nothing else to go by! I have destroyed all your arguments, and you got your feelings hurt. As for fanboyism and elitism, you have acted both as a fanboy and elitist on these pages. As for me not having a life, surely originality is not your forte'. Your posts bring me pure amusement as you again contradicted yourself. More personal Potshots please? Because you have no more arguments. I think I may use these posts of yours for dramatic reading material. It would bring entertainment to many. :D
@TheTrueMagusX1 Hey, I'm not the one with a YouTube channel with over 5,000 minions. Maybe instead of wasting time posting stuff about your pathetic life you should give more attention to your own health and your child. And you're wrong. Fanboyism is not a form of elitism. Fanboyism, simply put, is hostility towards an opposite brand. Elitism is an attitude that they belong to an elite group (ie. PC gamers believe they know more than console gamers). Obviously, you don't know as much as you think you know. While you are on hiatus, why don't you get a life?
Just beat it and i gotta say no pun intended when it comes to that cliff hanger ending :D great game plays well!!!
@TheTrueMagusX1 I don't need your respect. Your personality reeks of hypocrisy and bigotry. So you blog about how you get angry when people generalize that gamers are unsociable, fat, or whatnot. Then you place yourself on hiatus on your YouTube channel because you admit to "not taking good care of yourself for the past couple of years" and you will "try to eat better". Bravo! Look here everybody! Father of the year! I'd rather be a fanboy any day than be an elitist schmuck.
@ Incubus420: Did you play U2 and the original? If you had then you should easily be able to tell why U2 was far better than the original. The sequel surpassed the original in every aspect; Graphics, Story, Set Peice moments, Scale, acting, and it added Mulltiplayer! Other than HD, what did GOW3 do that the first two did not? Dont take this as a GOW bash, because it is a great game, but the statement you made simply makes no sense...
@banana23man Well first and foremost, anyone who tries to counter Machshot is not bad in my back in the least! :D Second of all I still disagree with your points made earlier, the difference though is I respect you, not Machshot. But as for Mature centric games being a smaller based, thats not true. Like I said look at the sales for MW2, GTAIV and Halo 3, those are mature centric games and are amongst the best, so I really donot think the mature base is small by anymeans. But I do see where your getting at in your other points though.
@TheTrueMagusX1 i guess you misunderstood my point. i was trying to say that 1 million is a very good number for a series that has a relatively smaller user base, and intended for mature audience. I mean, for games like FF13, it's not a surprise that it sold so much. the advertising campaign was huge. we saw the first trailer way back in 2006. It's a multiplatform game and almost every one of its predecessor was a major hit. Not only that, it's a game that appeal to a wider audience (esp female and younger gamers) I was merely trying to counter MachShot's point about how FF13 is going to beat GOW3 because it didnt sell 1 mil within 24 hours. btw, i'm a big fan of GOW. it's the reason why i got my ps3 in the first place, which i have to say is one of the best choice i've ever made :D
@ftrain08 "just wait til all the kids have birthdays throughout the year, that number will steadily go up" this is a very mature game. I'm not sure if it's the right thing for parents to buy for their children.
It's getting the sales it deserved. There are a lot of games that get to many sales that were undeserved (MW2) then there are games like this that deserve more sales.
Ok people calm down it's just a video game. It's there for fun, not for immature arguing that ends up turning into a grammar war. Grow up and respect what people think, whether they prefer the 360 or the PS3.
Come on. Grow up. Just because someone doesn't agree with you that a certain game was better than another one doesn't make you right and the other person wrong. GoW3 and Mass Effect 2 were both fantastic games in my opinion. I was glued from start to finish with both of them. My personal favorite this year so far has been Heavy Rain. Heavy Rain blew me away and in my opinion it set itself above the rest with it's gameplay and storytelling. But who is to say that another game isn't going to just blow us away? What if say...Mafia II is a fantastic game with an oscar worthy story? (theoretically speaking). To say a game deserves game of the year this early.....a little soon.
@banana23man Also if you recall the battle with Zeus, when the Titian Gia showed, Zues said Kratos failed " maybe you should have choose the other". They never explain who the other is So its more than left open to a sequel.
@MachShot Actually your using the punctuation argument because I obliterated any argument towards you. And by the way I think your angry, your angry because I patronized you. But alas it was not I who started the partonizing, that goes to you good sir, telling people they donot know what they are talking about. No you donot know what your talking about. Perhaps my punctuation sucks, but I can hold a conversation with fellow gamers. Because I have knowledge. You? Your just deluded by by your fanboyism, something I am not. I enjoy all games and all consoles. Your just locked away in your little box, being an XBot, and not enjoying the gaming world. You have again given false information(The show at hand is represented as one episode not four. It was divided up as four segments but not four episodes. Learn your defintions first), you mixed up fact with opinion on numerous occasions, and you back track to make up your mistakes. And then you beg for people not to patronize, when you have done it yourself. Your arguments are easily easily ripped apart.
@TheTrueMagusX1 Perhaps you should first learn basic punctuation. The conjunction "and" does not have a comma preceding it unless you are presenting more than two elements. Don't even patronize me. I know exactly what I am talking about. I knew long before it was aired on SyFy that it was split up into four parts.
I finished it and returned it for full refund on RDR. It was a great game but not much to do afterward so I feel I got a great deal at eb.
1 mil hahaha! all you ps fanboys and all you guys could buy is 1 mil. this was supposed to be a system seller. you guys are funny dont let ff b multiconsole sold 2 to 1 xbox 360 tyou guys need to shutup and support your console. 1 mil you guys are a joke hahaha!
has anyone been able to finish it on titan mode? i'm stuck on the last boss. . dang it! this game is simply mind blowing, more than a few times i was left with my eyes and mouth wide open, just, wow!
@oz74363 I find it hillarious that you say you donot care and its minimal stuff, but still you jumped in and got angry about the situation. If you did not care you would simply not saying anything at all. So next time you jump in, donot say you donot care, because you actual do.
God of war 3 is the one of the best games i have ever played in 25 years of gaming!!!!!......... and i for one understand, and liked the way it ended
I think its funny you guys are arguing about such nominal things like this. Each one of you are entitled to your opinions and views so SHUT UP about someone elses opinions. For cripes sakes people....go paint balling or something. Personally I think this game is great because they have kept the same basic concept throughout the series. It feels to me that I have played one game on three disks. Its the same thing over and over again but it is truly fun and exciting to see which god I get to kill next and how I get to do it.
@TheTrueMagusX1 It's broken into four parts - the universe, the storyline, the user experience, and then all of the sci and fi put together. Look it up in the "Media" at masseffect.com if you don't believe me. I never said anything about the length of the documentary. Wow. Epic failure on your part.
One of the best games I have played in 2010. I will remember the epic moments of GoW 3 for years to come. The designers, programmers and artists are awesome. Hera's Garden had one of the best puzzles in recent games. All of the boss fights were mind blowing. Helios and Hermes boss-fights could have used more gameplay sequences. God of war is an Epic game.
