Sony Computer Entertainment America Santa Monica hiring online programmers to craft leaderboards and matchmaking.
Single-player-only games are an increasingly rare breed, with only a few marquee series lacking a multiplayer component. These include the Elder Scrolls and Fallout from Bethesda Softworks, BioWare's Mass Effect and Dragon Age, and Sony's God of War.
Now, though, it looks like the latter franchise may be getting a multiplayer component. Sony Computer Entertainment America Santa Monica is currently hiring a senior online programmer to "join the God of War team!" Applicants must have experience "designing and implementing systems and tools to support networking needs (such as in-game communication, client-server, matchmaking, [and] leaderboards)." (Emphasis added.)
That latter part of the ad makes it sound like SCEA Santa Monica's next project will support online multiplayer in some form or another. (SCEA reps had not commented on the matter as of press time.) However, there is no guarantee that the studio's next game will be an entry in the God of War series, although the finale of God of War III did leave open the possibility for a sequel.

Everyone whos played GOW3 and played the 1st part of the LAST BOSS fight and liked it...gow multiplayer should be fun for you too! HOW could you not light that part!? It was the most epic experience ive had in a fighting game! better than Mortal Kombat
getting sick of multiplayer for multiplayers sake. games like assassins creed and god of war really dont need these features. there nothing better than an engrossing story that hooks you from start to finish. i think pointless multiplayer just detracts from this. its like suddenly bioware tacking on a mp mode to dragon age or mass effect. unnecessary and would probably come at the price of the quality of single player
I don't know about this. What's wrong with having an awesome single player adventure? Isn't that the reason why we love this series and why it is sosuccessful anyway?
coop would be cool, like trials of saint Lucia type thing, but pvp would also be interesting, like boss fights except one of the players get to be Zeus, hades, Hermes, etc. even Deimos!
Damn, I love God of War but in multiplayer how it's possible without having many characters available to play with! Not a bunch of Kratos swarming all over the damn place! What kind of multiplayer modes will be included? The best would be coop mode!
This...is...a...terrible...idea. Less budget for the singleplayer and awesomesauce. GoW4: Shorter SP Edition (Now with stitched on multiplayer) Sad panda....
what about like people who doesnot like online games like me o_O please don't stop making singleplayer games
I can imagine coop as long as the weapons aren't hooked to chains. "Sorry dude, I cut your head off from ten feet away on accident." However, without that brutality and sense of being overpowered in combat, it just wouldn't feel like god of war anymore. Single-player only would be best.
I think the God of War series dosen't need online or co-op, but i think it needs an online leaderboard of challenge rooms and what not. But it some magical reason they do decide to put in online for god of war then ill give it a chance, but if it sucks @$$ then i hope they make an awsome single player
@Koi-Neon-X, Because not every game needs multiplayer or co-op generally its hurts strong SP franchises more than it helps.
RE5 co-op was understandable it worked... It would be more difficult to make it work in a similar fashion to that game, I mean would both characters share the same screen? This is going to be a difficult thing to make work effectively but props for them trying if that's what they are doing?
GOW series is cool as it is but if you have to put multiplayer element in it, make it a co-op one. There's nothing like sharing the gore with your love ones.
@021-vincent as long as ninja theory does not gets we all good but other than that well damn kratos would probably find that adenose or what every that guy name is and beat him sense less
If They Wanna Make A New God Of War Game Please Don't Change The Character Or Anything Else In The Story !! Cause When I Saw Dante In Devil May Cry 5 Or Called DMC I Was Very Disappointed !!! I Hope They Only Get A New Story For God Of War 4 That's All !!!
It doesn't need multiplayer but if it really wants to, it could have co-op or an online 'skill' leaderboard competing for level times, skills or something? Generic bogstandard online multiplayer (3rd person brawling using the GoW characters) could be disasterous - especially if it affects the single player campaign length.
@Master_Turismo I'm not going to write this off right away. I remember when assassins creed multiplayer was announced and i automatically trash talked it as nonsense and then I loved it. Hopefully it will be done right, if not, the single player is still epic anyway :p
And thus begins (continues?) the rape of the God of War franchise. Commence disregard for legacy and swinish grabs for money.
interesting idea but anything else than a coop mode wouldnt make sense... and coop with whom? kratos and fear kratos? :) or maybe the brother mentioned in the first part extras will finally have a part in the game... i would love another gow, loved every one (except the psp titles since i dont own a psp.... yet)
Mulitplayer is an interesting concept for God Of War, its just not suited for any sort of compeditive multiplayer, but co-op COULD work of course they would need to change some things such as slow-mo hits I think ill keep an interested eye on this
It just so happens that the games mentioned in this post (plus the FF console games) are my favourite games on ps3. Local multiplayer or coop is always a welcome change of pace. Just don't go ruining the single player experience by cramming a online experience for supposed longevity and/or popularity. That goes for God of war and the other greats mentioned in this post.
God Of War is not getting multi-player. If anything they plan on making an MMO like Vindictus with God Of War combat, which I doubt is going to happen.
As much as I love God of War, I can't really see it as a multiplayer title. Just doesn't say workable to me.
God of war Spin-off. A fighting game Since Kratos has guest starred in Mortal Kombat 2011 and Soul Calibur Broken Destiny. A fighting game seems to be a good on-line mulitplayer. The traditional God of War type of game does not seem to be suited to On-line muliplayer gaming. So must be a spin off of some kind.
@aj_marquez Whatever, I'm not even going to say anything more. People such as yourself just annoy me too much that writing what I truly think would be a bannable offence.
I personally don't really care for multiplayer games, as I have a hard time with some games & get yelled at because I'm not going fast enough.
i guess it will be online leaderboards. Otherwise hundreds Kratos' running around and killing each other would be ridiculous.......
this is probably a promo for mk. gow multiplayer would never happen. i wouldn't mind leaderboards it makes me have an excuse to play it over and over again just to beat a score. stop thinking in the box they're trying to make you play it again it's call playability look at deus ex everything is complete so there won't be dlc. you guys are one minded something new isn't all that bad. so if there's leaderboards and that's it i'm fine with this update but if there's like mk or mvc or any other fighting game i'm out.
Some games need to stick to single player, they turn out to be the overall best games. This game is one of them.
It never fails...Every single time some news pops up about something new and different coming to some area of gaming ppl get in an uproar and bash it before its even implemented. Damn ppl, why are u so anti-freakin-innovation??
