High-def one-two punch of PS2 blockbusters arrives in stores next month; each game to have its own slate of trophies.
While game publishers frequently use the holiday release window for their biggest titles of the year, next month Sony will focus on its biggest games of previous years. The company today announced that God of War Collection, a high-def compilation of the first two God of War games, will debut on the PlayStation 3 November 17.
The games' 720p visual overhaul won't be the only new feature enticing gamers to trek through Kratos' first two adventures again. Sony is also including a full slate of trophies for each game. Each copy of the game will also include a code to download a demo of God of War III from the PlayStation Network months before the full game's March release.
When it launched on the PlayStation 2 in 2005, the first God of War drew critical accolades and commercial success, selling more than 2.4 million units in the US alone. In 2007, God of War II drew similar high praise from reviewers and sold nearly 2 million units domestically despite being on a legacy platform. A PSP prequel, God of War: Chains of Olympus, has sold more than 800,000 units domestically since its 2008 debut.
A full list of the trophies for God of War Collection is available on Sony's official PlayStation blog.
I have one of the 60Gb PS3's that could NOT play PS2 games. Will I be able to play the games on this disc even though I have a PS3 that is incapable of playing actual PS2 game discs?
Just went to buy this title that I've been waiting ages for and it's not being released until tomorrow! U lied Gamespot! U lied!
I own a 360, which I love, but I just picked up a PS3 for the exclusive titles (like GOW) and I'm so glad I did. As I said I still love my Xbox, but the exclusives for the PS3 were much better than I gave them credit for and I will stop talking trash about the PS being inferior. So far I still like the Xbox live a little better, (maybe cause all my friends have a 360 and I don't know anyone with a PS) but I'm still learning the PS network. Looking forward to 2010 with all the amazing titles for BOTH systems, but now I don't have to get pissed when I see Uncharted, GOW, or Metal Gear and wonder how cool they would be to play.
Does anyone know when this will be coming out in the UK? Played the original GOW on my PS3 and it crashes unfortunately at one point so would love a hi def fully working version! Can't wait for this!!! :)
yeah dude not to be an ass but thats just stupid salarian, first off i absolutely hate seeing people arguing with fan boys on websites but im sick of it, second ps3 with out a doubt is better, me and all my freinds own both btw i own a gamming pc too, but yeah ps3 has a way faster and more crisp graphics engine the framerate faster and the sound is more clear and intense. third there are a lot more console only titles for ps3 than 360 and all of them are masterpeices, for example the 360 may have console only titles but not all of em are good, in fact most are terrible and get taken in by terrible studios and are made worse. 4th point here look every game could migrate to another console or come out for both but they stay because a company has rights to their studios. example every one knows now that its a fact microsoft payed bethsada for the dlc for fallout3 to be exclusive same with rockband and grand theft auto now the fifth GTA too, and with out a doubt there are more studios microsoft is striking deals with we just dont know it yet, look its all about money and power for microsoft plus what are you paying a fee to play online for, you get that if not more on the ps3 along with better graphics engines more titles free internet free blueray player free online play and communication... i rest my fuc4in case bro!
@SalarianChemist-did you even watch any of E3? They even announced Final Fantasy 14 is coming 2010 ps3 only and its only gonna be online. and I'm not calling you a fanboy for saying GOW3 won't sell as much cause you never know. But from looking at your profile you rate multiplatform games for both the 360 and ps3 you give the ps3 1 point lower than the 360(Ex. Tekken 6 for 360 9.0 Tekken 6 for ps3 8.0). I think anyone would believe that to be a fanboy.
@ lindseyiluvyou I'd like to respond to what you had to say. 2010 should not be labeled as the "year of the PS3" any more than 2007, 2008, or 2009 were. Also, 2010 is going to be by far the best year the Xbox 360 has had yet. In fact 2010 is actually being officially marketed as "The year of the Xbox 360 relaunch." The reason for this makes a reference to high profile attractions such as Project Natal, Halo: Reach, Splinter Cell: Conviction, Mass Effect 2, further marketing and extra cars for the recently released Forza Motorsport 3, Fable 3, Killer Instinct 3, Perfect Dark, Shadow Complex 2, along with other software projects for Xbox 360 and Xbox Live Arcade. There are even rumors circulating that the Xbox 360 will receive Grand Theft Auto 5 as an exclusive. Along with another rumor that says Microsoft is negotiating to purchase the exclusive rights to Call of Duty in 2010. So, before anyone goes out advertising something as "the year of a console," it is usually a good idea to have games to back it up with. Remember, according to the sales information provided by Gamespot, Resistance 2 sold less than the first Resistance game. It is reasonable to conclude that Resistance 3 will sell even less than Resistance 2. Final Fantasy 14 is also going to be released for Xbox 360 and PC, so that game really doesn't matter in terms of "being the year" of either console. Also, Final Fantasy 14 has virtually no chance of being released in 2010. The chances of seeing Killzone 3 in 2009 or "any" year that Sony actually announces it are about as good as the odds of seeing Killzone 2 released when Sony originally announced (e.g., not that good). But in all honesty, this wouldn't be a big factor anyways. Remember, according to the information Gamespot provided, Killzone 2 was only on the market three months before it was already being outsold by games that had been on the market for 21 months. Although God of War 2 has a reputation for being inferior to the first God of War game and sold less than the first God of War game, it still sold an impressive number of units. I'm sure God of War 3 will be a top-seller for the PS3 in 2010. I will do my best to "stop being a fanboy," as you say. However, as my comment here points out, I am simply writing based on information provided by Gamespot. I always give credit where credit is due, so don't worry about it buddy. I'm sure both the Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii will all have a great year for 2010. I'm just saying it isn't smart to officially say "this is the year," because that is never a good idea unless you know for sure the games can make it for their release.
@SalarianChemist FANBOY ALERT. =the 360 is not a god so stop treating it like one? Why do you think so many people since the price drop have got the ps3 over 360? Because of a blu-ray player combined with a game system, plus every 360 fanboy even has admitted that 2010 will be the year of the PS3. Why? Because of MAG, God Of War 3, Final Fantasy 14 online, Resistance 3, possibly Killzone 3. And you have no idea what your talking about because Resistance 2, Killzone 2, and God of war are all good games and I reserved this and got the demo. There are no "Framerate drops" so your wrong about that too. Stop being a fanboy okay?
finaly. i tried to play the ps2 versions a year ago when i first got my tv it looked horrible (in fact all de the ps2 games i had n still have look bad on a big screen) cant wait 2 get this
this is handy if ur old GoW games are either lost or broken both happened to me so this is good news LOL
i hate when i hear news like this, not that its bad news its good news but bad news for me. a few months ago i bought god of war one and two since i missed out on the series. and now i feel i should have waited. maybe ill get it anyways just cause
@Elslav it actually is $40. good call. LoL. Sony actually have it available for preordering. This is a definite must get prior to getting GOW3. 8^D
Man i have to get a PS3 before GOW III hit the shelves or its a failure to me. Let the Saving again begins.
Well it's too late now I spent money already. And the only new features are the graphics and trophies. Damn you David Jaffe!! >:(
Being an Xbox 360 owner myself, I do envy the PS3 owners for having some really good game exclusives. I'm still saving up for a PS3, but personally, I still find £250 a little too high. It's the same price as when I bought the 360 elite last year, therefore it was gutting for me as I have toiled for the money. But I still want to play games like Unchartered, Demon's Souls etc.
I like the fact that this is coming to the PS3 since I've never played God of War before, but since I'm planning to get God of War 3 in a few months as a new release I don't know that I've got the time to even play and enjoy this. I'm still grinding through Demon's Souls and enjoying every minute of it and that's while Uncharted 2 is just sitting on my shelf collecting dust... not to even mention the X360 games that I'm playing. So many games, too little time.
kretos?well,he is a well thought character,i pray this release will be as good as the two previous releases
@SalarianChemist: blah, blah, blah,i liked forza 3 and never said it wasn't awsome, infact it is some thing i always wanted to play even more than GT5,but your just a fanboy and saying no to god of war,you are crazy, how do you have time to play on Xbox 360 when you are just bumping in on every PS3 article, did you you try PS3 ??!!!,i'm sure your sneaking to your friend house just to play MGS4 or any other exclusive on PS3,you may be even hide a PS3 in your own room, just shut up,this game is awsome as well as every thing else on PS3,and how the hell Xbox 360 is better than a PC??!!,you are just a fanboy that can't shut up,though even i like PS3 sooo much i can't beat you in bieng fanboy, just shut up and go play on your Xbox 360.
I think it's funny how Xbox fanboys always come into the PS3 section and bash it; but I guess it works both ways cuz I've seen PS3 fanboys in the Xbox section bashing it. Isn't this whole fanboy thing over now? It's so two years ago. Anyway, GoW = awesome.
@SalarianChemist We don't care how you think things are. You're ignoring most of the people who actually know what they're talking about who have done tests and have proven the PS3 is faster than Xbox 360, no matter what GPU is it running on. The CBE alone is "revolutionary" enough. Now, if you don't have anything else to do than troll, gtfo. This is about the game, not about your speculations on bullsh-. Parts 2006 are pretty much always better than 2005. Sure, Xbox 360 may have a slightly better GPU, PS3 has a better CPU and faster RAM, a lot smaller error rate, 5400rpm SATA HDD upgradable to 7200rpm and SSD, while you have to stick with a slower HDD which isn't even 5400rpm. I don't really want to read how you think of things in every Playstation 3 -article, just because you don't have anything better to do. If you care about PS3 so much, then just buy it, if you don't, then play your own console. It's hard to actually believe you have fun on Xbox 360, when you keep arguing here on GameSpot about Playstation 3.. How much do you play daily, exactly? Because if you play more than you argue, then you officially have no life. You think games suck, because you say so. That's childish, you think sales make a game, that's childish too. You gave Killzone a 6.0, because it didn't have Co-Op. What a reason to drop the score down from 10.0 to 6.0, I'm not saying the game is exactly flawless, but it sure doesn't deserve such a drop for such a reason, when the Co-Op wasn't even that asked for, while you gave Gears of War 2 a 10.0, when it runs on laggy peer to peer -servers. You said before you own a PS3 as well, then why is your PSN ID never displayed on your profile and you always ignore the question when it's being asked. That's right, because you don't own one, but you want to make everyone else think so that they wouldn't know that you're a fanboy on Xbox 360's side who doesn't want to let any PS3 owner have fun on games. You actually have to try to get them regret their purchase like it isn't their own business what they buy. Let everyone have a console they want to own, just because you don't have it, doesn't mean it sucks, it just means that you don't have it. Don't talk like the Xbox 360 is completely flawless, because it's not, not even close. We all know you're a fanboy, so there's no point hiding it. It actually made me laugh when you once claimed the Xbox 360 can outperform PC in certain games, when it's obvious that PCs are user-upgradable and therefore can always handle games better than consoles. The only person who's going to thumb up your own comment is you anyway, because pretty much everyone including me, disagree with you, which should already be a clue of leaving the article, rather than getting everyone here hating on you and your pointless console-war starters. You know what? You can reply back, but I won't reply to you anyways, the reason for that is simple; It's pointless. You always come up with stuff that gets later proven wrong, I have a life of my own, you should get one too, because you're really here on GameSpot arguing and trolling all the time. If you really think Xbox 360 is that great, then how about actually playing on it, fanboy? Play more, argue less.
A long time XBOX devotee, this game made me buy a PS2. Superb execution, story and visuals. I've played them on my BC PS3, however a HiDef version would be oh so welcomed. Can't wait.
@XeonForce, I wasn't "bashing" anything for having "only 720p resolution." I was simply pointing out that the fundamental reason why the God of War games stood out for having quality graphics on the PS2 was because virtually all PS2 games used a resolution of 480i (Standard Definition), while the God of War games used the much less common resolution of 480p (Enhanced Definition). This relates to God of War 3 due to the fact that God of War 3 does not have that type of graphic advantage over the competition. God of War 3 will have "High-Definition" graphics, just like all other PS3 games. There is nothing "wrong" with this. The point I was making is that God of War 3 will not have a resolution advantage that stands out from the crowd the way that the other God of War games did. This is not a matter of "opinion," it is a mathematical fact.
I wished that there also included chains of Olympus on this disc, I wonder how much the graphics will be improved? In order for it to be worth buying. I already have all three games. I hope Sony does not intend to start a trend of making PS2 re-releases on the PS3. When they could have just kept making Backward compatiable PS3's? Plus when do you need a special code to download a demo?
Well i guess it's time to trade in my "God of War" "God of War 2" ps2 versions running @ 480P to Game Stop for the 720p versions on the Ps3. :)
Fantastic! I never did play the first two games. I did play Chains of Olympus for PSP and it was really good even though it was short. I will definitely buy a PS3, but only when the price drops further. :(
@SalarianChemist You do realize that 2D games aside, 720p is the highest native resolution console games run on right? and that anything 1080p is just forced upscaling. Bashing God of War III for having 720p doesn't make any sense dude.
dis reason is enough fr e to go with a ps3 nd al those ppl think dis isnt upto the standard "go to hell with your thoughts"
@Xaolen and all the others b!tching about technicalities: This game is amazing in every aspect you can think of. Upconverted, native, more pixels, fewer pixels, none of that is going to matter sh!t when you play the game because its so freakishly good. @ blackace you cant even whine right if you dont get your facts right so...
