Ubisoft USPTO filing reveals likely name of next installment in its tactical Tom Clancy shooter series, due out after Q1 2010.
Ever since it was first revealed in January--and officially announced in April--Ghost Recon 4 has been shrouded in mystery. No details on the next installment in the Tom Clancy-inspired tactical shooter series have been revealed other than its release window, which will be sometime after March 2010.
Even the game's name is a working title, obscuring whether it is a direct sequel to the last installment in the series, 2007's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2. That mystery deepened in October, when the Australian Classification Board classified a game called "Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Predator."
Now, the plot has thickened further. According to a December 14 US Patent & Trademark Office filing filing, French publisher Ubisoft has trademarked the term "Ghost Recon Future Soldier" for use in "game software and electronic game programs." The trademark also extends to games for PCs, consoles, handhelds, and mobile phones.
The title Ghost Recon Future Soldier raises several possibilities. The most likely is that the game will concern the Future Soldier programs being conducted by the US and its NATO allies. The initiative, currently part of the US Army's Brigade Combat Team Modernization Program, focuses on outfitting infantrymen with networked communications and high-tech equipment. Much of that equipment was featured in the critically acclaimed Advanced Warfighter 2, set during a fictional conflict in the year 2013. (GameSpot's video review is below.)
Unfortunately, any official announcements regarding the game will likely not be made this year. When asked by GameSpot about the trademark and the status of the new Ghost Recon game, Ubisoft reps offered only a clipped "no comment."
I hope they go back to the Ghost Recon 1 and 2 style(Not GRAW). Big open maps with a couple small ones or small versions of the large. Ghost Recon 2(xbox) was some of the best online multyplayer I have ever played. Awesome ability to make custom gamemodes, the ability to hide, ambush from the somewhat realistic foilage and dark shadows... Constant stream of content, all made free after a time, or free to begin with. Those were the good days.
@Rekunta That's how Ubisoft referred to it in internal documents. I think they consider the GRAW series all "Ghost Recon 3." I suspsect this will be the next franchise jump a la GTAIII vs. GTAIV.

1 Like @GrilledCharlie I think Ghost Recon games moved in the urban direction simply because that's where modern warfare is expected to take place. Even the US military concentrates far more on urban tactics in their basic training programs than woodland combat, though I don't see mountain or desert warfare being out of place and it'd be nice if they threw in something like that (Modern Warfare 2 does it, after all).
I miss the old Ghost Recon games. Ghosts were just more fun in the woods, deserts, and jungles. If they can just get away from being in the dang city full time, it will improve.
1 Like I cant wait to see what the next Ghost Recon title has instore. I loved the first two and I hope the next game becomes another ground breaking title like GRAW did back in 2006. I love the mulitplayers many coop modes and I hope they expand on that idea as well. I hope they fix the grenade tossing to be a bit faster, cause I hate that crazy distance ring! Keep up the good work UBISOFT, I am looking forward to Reconing again very soon.
GRAW 1 & 2 were too linear. If they mix the technology of the GRAW series with the openness of the older GR games, then this game would be great. I hope that is the case!
I wish they would return to their roots of good games. GR1 and GR2 were awesome games. This futuristic bull is 0 fun. All the HUD in my face
As long as it stays a 3rd person shooter. I'm happy. If they turn this into a dumb FPS, I WILL NOT even look at it.
Ghost Recon is short enough to say. And when you turn it into an acronym, GRAW is quite catchy. But "Ghost Recon Future Soldier"? They have failed on the title. Can't wait anyway!
Remember how awesome Ghost Recon was on the good old PS2? Yes, that's what I want! Yes, I want the same awesomeness on the PS3.

hopefully it will be innovative like rainbow six vegas 1, they've had time off for a while they wont have to recycle games like theyve done in the past *cough* rainbow six vegas 2 *cough*
I just hope that they just finally fix the AI in these games, thats the entire reason I don't buy them anymore because you shoot once even with a silencer and the entire world knows your exact position the rest of the mission, or like when you snipe someone from a mile away and a guy right next to him examines his bullet hole entry in his head and a matter or .00001 of a second and is able to determine your exact position, idk does anyone else have these problems as well with the game
they need to bring ghost recon back to its roots like the original ghost recon was on the PC. FPS all the way!
Hope it will have the whole three-man squad that lets you play a your squadmates either you want to or because you died. I liked that idea. It showed me that the mission doesnt have to fail because your character died and that your team can still make it.
Ghost Recon (the original XBOX game) was awesome. It was far from perfect but it made you feel like you were in the heart of the action with big open spaces and lots of freedom to do your own thing. The GRAW games had a much more confined, on-rails kind of game play that did not feel as authentic. Even games like Rainbow6-Vegas had more charm and more freedom. With the GRAW series, I just could not identify with my character that much.
@ Tommz7070 Ghost recon is great, but if its not your style thats fine. No need to dis the whole series. But I gotta say both GRAW games were 100% lame. Not even because of the third person view, cause it worked extremely well in GR2 and summit strike, but rather the maps were more set up where you just find a corner and wait there til you see someone. Then run out real quick and pop them then hide again. GR2 had a lot of large outdoor grassy maps without as many flat corners so it was much harder to corner camp. If it weren't for that in GRAW it might have actually been a fun MP game. On top of that Advanced warfighter had this "save the world on your own" mentality which is lame. Ghost recon, and rainbow six never had that type of thing. Sure it was save the day, but it wasn't save the day by yourself, it was with careful planning and execution with your squad, not this run and gun blind fire 3rd person camping mess.
never liked GR game and am might be looking forward to this game if it is good so Ubisoft if u want me to get this game do something good for your new cleint and your fans
Great, now that GRIN is closed, they wont be able to destroy the pc versions like it happened wit GRAW 1 and 2, both games were awesome on consoles and completly diffirent on pc, they sucked terribly on pc. Anyway i also want another rainbowsix, so get moving ubisoft!!
@PixelAddict Yeah I completely agree about Rainbow. I thought the graphics in the single player were decent, but when it came to online gameplay and graphics, I don't know what the buzz was about. I thought it all felt really clunky and lack luster. Hopefully they can reinvent the next installments of GRAW and Rainbow like they are doing to Splinter Cell, it looks fantastic. And if you haven't read the Splinter Cell book(s), you should. It is full of action and awesomeness although not written by Clancy himself.
Whatever the final title is, Ubi will have to up the ante to compete with the impending glut of modern shooters. Medal of Honor, Spec Ops, the mountain of free PC-only shooters (Combat Arms, anyone?)... What I want to see is the next Rainbow Six. That game invented the modern-y shooter, as far as I'm aware.
GR2, especially Summit Strike, should have produced another game from that line. AW series was good, but lacked what GR2 had.
i wasnt really into the GRAW series, they were good games though. my heart lies with GR2 on the original xbox. it was so simple yet so much fun.

GRAW 2 was a great game, one of the better squad based games, Squad AI worked well if used properly. Its been to long since GRAW 2and its about time they made another. They need to hurry up and give us another Rainbow six to.
