Expansions for Xbox 360's two top shooters get dated, both will cost 800 Microsoft points ($10).
The next three weeks will be a busy time for Xbox 360 owners. Hot on the heels of this week's Game Developers Conference, Microsoft will be releasing map packs for its console's two top action franchises--Halo and Gears of War.
The first installment will come next week in the form of the Gears of War 2 Snowblind Map Pack. Described in detail in GameSpot's recent interview with Epic Games executive producer Rod Fergusson, the map pack will be the second for the wildly popular third-person shooter and will follow an extensive update of its multiplayer experience system due out tomorrow.
According to the blog of Xbox Live director Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb, the four-map pack will cost 800 Microsoft points, or $9.99 in real-world currency. It will feature three all-new, winter-themed maps--Grindyard, Courtyard, and Under Hill--as well as a frosty remake of Fuel Depot from the original Gears of War. Together, the multiplayer update and map pack will also bring a total of nine new Xbox 360 achievements, five of which are based on the new experience system.
After Gears of War 2 gets Snowblinded, Microsoft will release the long-awaited Halo 3 Mythic Map Pack on April 9. Also costing M$800/$9.99, the pack will feature three new multiplayer arenas: Assembly, an open arena situated inside a massive Covenant structure; Orbital, set inside a corridor-filled space station; and Sandbox, an open map designed to be customized with the Forge level editor. For more details on the add-on, which will also feature new achievements, check out GameSpot's hands-on preview of the Mythic Map pack.
@encore33 yeah probably as they did the same when legendary was released with the heroic... well said hajjjustin
@ gokulegacy Please... Please tell me you are joking... Here's a hot tip, go check out a map called Valhalla, I'm sure you'll see the resemblance...
I REALLY wish bungie would come out with a blood gultch for Halo 3. I mean, they had it for Halo 2. And it was by far the best map on both Halo and Halo 2. So why not for Halo 3? Come on bungie. I want my blood gultch back.
The new Halo maps are fun as I have played because I got the Halo Wars limited edition. Im not sure if I should get the Gears 2 map, I did not get the combustable map pack either.
Harsh, hajjjustin, but fair!!! (see below)....... Gears just gets better and better! Ta to everyone involved......Mark (England).
@ sgt-hawkins haha no, not full of myself, I just know I'm good, and that's all there is to it and I'm just sick of people whining, nothing comes cheap, especially in this current economy. @ mattcarlo - couldn't agree more, already got my level 22 :D
People pay for Halo maps because it's obviously the strongest online console game around weather you like it or not. Bungie uses great strategy and their matchmaking system is still better than anything else out there. I'm glad that COD4 pushed them, we need more games to do that.
I'm not paying anything for Gears 2 anymore. Fix your completely broken multiplayer and i'll think about it. Sandbox looks really fun for Halo 3. Legendary map pack is still awesome ! Avalanche is right up there with some of the best Halo 2 maps.
Im glad I just picked up some MS points yesterday :D Im looking forward to the Gears 2 map pack. Also... Well said hajjustin ;)
First of all The developers don't decide the price tag MS does. I agree with Lt Maverick92 Second it isn't cheap to make this stuff by the developers. Third these map packs look awesome.
Seriously, I understand where everyone is getting at with not wanting to pay $10 b/c it is Micro and not the devs. But seriously, everyone *****ing and whining on Gamespot articles won't change a thing. If you don't want to buy the maps, DON'T, it's simple. And if you want some free micro points, go play in a video game tourny or something like that, if any of you are actually half as good as you act, then you should be able to win some micro points easy. That's what I do...if you don't want to pay, then don't. Just stop whining on a GS article, cause it isn't changing a thing. OT - Mythic Map Pack is great, can't wait for snowblind map pack! The new ranking system in gears is a lot better so far it seems to me, the only problem I have is that when it shows EXP and stuff earned at the end of the game, it doesn't give you long enough to see what you got. But, I haven't encountered anything bad, although I rarely ever did before. It seems to be running smoother to me. Good job Epic on TU3! Maverick PS - quit *****ing at Epic and saying gears 2 was a let down, because I'm pretty darn sure tons are still playing it you scrubs :D! Just because you suck at the video game doesn't mean everyone does!! Try to keep that in mind ;)
Mythic in Halo 3 has absolutely amazing graphics! The new "snow" stuff in Gears of War 2 also has incredible graphics! This is going to be a very fun time to play Xbox 360!
The maps for halo are great if you love the game you will pay for it but i have heard that the halo odst will have all the maps up to date so just wait for that and stop babbling
I'll give Gears another go with this new experience system. I just thought it was bunk when I could play a thousand games and have a two-bar and my friend could come in and play 10 games and have a four-bar. Makes no sense whatsoever. And since I have the money, I'm going to spend it on maps... god, I miss the old days when I could get all 4 Halo 2 map packs for free.
See the ridiculous part of the cost isn't that the devs are charging a lot for a small amount of work, it's that MS is charging a lot for a small amount of work that they didn't do. If the devs wanted to charge then that would be one thing but to charge $10 for something that is comparably small... But people will pay so the system goes on. I just wish if I were being gouged, it was atleast by the people who made the software.
@tobkinator: From Bungie.net: "The Legendary Map Pack, released just about one year ago, still averages over five thousand downloads per day!"
My biggest gripe is the fact that Epic is charging for a multiplayer map pack where the online multiplayer was broken for 3 months!! Rather wait for the pack to be free.
ObiWonCanBlowMe:I don't think thats the point man depending on where you are your paying $60 for a full game which what can take 1-4 years to make.Don't you think charging us $10 for 4 maps which takes **** all to make in comparison is more then a tad ridiculous?
all you people complaining are either broke or u just dont play it that much. if u play the game alot 10 dollers isnt that much!!! and besides dont any of u people know how a business works maybe if they had one guy in his moms basement making the maps then they wouldn't cost $10 but they have teams building these maps and testing them making sure there arnt any bugs so that people dont complain but people still find things to complain about
It really is sad to see devs charge $10 for only 3 lousy maps. To all those who say "lolz iz only $10 you poor hobo" I keep saying that this isn't about who can afford what, but it's the fact that devs over- charge for such small content. Isn't it enough we are already paying $60 for your games? Why do you devs continue to kick us in the balls?
i still dont have the legendary map pack.. still wondering if i should get legendary then mythic or straight go for mythic?
10 dollars isn't a lot...I mean,10 is only 1 plus 1 plus 1 plus 1 plus 1 plus 1 plus 1 plus 1 plus 1 plus 1--well,Big Brother would disagree, but who cares, that's the cost of a month of Runescape membership, and that's garbage--I'm going to be playing that Halo Map Pack for a long time, and it's going to be funner:)Actually,I'm buying that and the Gears pack, omg Fuel Depot remake:)
You must be mentally disabled to not understand the price tag. All of this is powerful marketing. People who get in on it early post youtube videos of what they're playing. It looks fun, others want it. Lots more sales. It's not so complicated, nor is it unwarranted. If you don't want to pay the price (don't forget that standard multiplayer updates are free guys) for the maps, then don't! They cover the cost of keeping the game functional and developing extra content with your dollars. More than anything, you wont get free content if NOBODY buys their DLC. They can't afford to throw you a bone if you don't bite for some of the stuff. In many cases though, there are a lot of playlists you can play with new content that you couldn't before. Consider that it's another way to make your game fresh. Why not buy it? I for one am looking forward to new Forge material and the addition of new Gears maps. Sometimes things get to monotonous.
Ugh. 800 points for 3 maps is pretty bad, compared to what it used to be. Double that in GTA IV and you've got new soundtrack, vehicles, weapons, characters, missions... I could go on. Good job I got my maps with the Limited Edition of Halo Wars.
ouch, 10 dollars? i dont blame the developers really, MS has something against free content from what i know, i`ll get the halo 3 map pack, cuz it sounds worth it, but the gears 2 map pack, im iffy about it
The new leveling system and other patch notes has got me very optimistic for GOW 2. I will be playing much more, however, I still think $10 is too much. Should be $5 for 3 maps.
Id start it but i dont know how, Sumome start it write down the address on here you people write it down and send it to all your firends in your list tell em to sign it online it will spread like fire and they will know how retarded it is. Sure we'll get the excuse "it costs money to develop", well im sure it did back in the day when this sorta stuff was free, lets not stand for this anymore. Come on sumone lets do this.
Someone start an online petition stating How stupid it is to pay 10 bux for 3 maps. Hell it isnt even 10$ most of use have to by a whole points card with left over points that cant buy anything at all until you get another sucker card. I hate microsofts bullcrap, forever pinching the fanbase that made it what is today.
