Brothers in Arms developer handling Sega's Alien-based first-person shooter; details on game still under wraps.
On Monday, Sega announced that it had acquired the rights to develop multiple games based on the Alien films, including a first-person shooter and a role-playing game. On Wednesday, the publisher revealed that Obsidian Entertainment, makers of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, was developing the RPG based on the sci-fi license.
In keeping with Sega's Alien news every other day, the company today announced that Gearbox Software will be handling the development of a first-person shooter for next-generation systems set in the films' sci-fi universe. The news confirms Sega's goof from earlier this week, when the publisher accidentally listed Gearbox's name on its Alien teaser site.
Gearbox is best known for its work on the Brothers in Arms series, the next edition of which is due in stores sometime in 2007.
Sega did not release any details on the game, but in a previous announcement it targeted 2009 as the release date of its first Alien-based title.
i remeber when i tried to get this like years ago and it got canceled on the ps2...=[......now i cant wait til this game comes out it sounds great...
I've been waiting a long time for news of a new aliens game and i couldn't be more happier, lets hope it's a good one
At last, Aliens is coming to the next-gen. I wonder if there is any hope of resurrecting Aliens; Colonial Marines, the game that was cancelled by EA ages ago?
Well, it looks like they will take their time on it. Which is good. At the very least, gameplay should be good. But why did they have to say something about the game NOW? Not a year before the game was released? Oh well. Just as long as it's a blast to play and follows the movies enough to keep people happy.
Dude this will rock I just wish Sega was as far from this as possible...Gearbox will be fine but Sega is just a terrible company IMO (yeah they have some hits)
Well, guess we have to wait and see... They could be very good games. Ive seen all Alien movies, and even all Predator, and I really didnt like a few things about the AvP movie, so, hopefully they will just keep at the basic... 2009 is quite a far out, so, we really have to wait and see what comes of these titles.
Alien without Predator is like The Simpson's without Homer. It will be horrible. I mean, predators main prey (besides humans), in a game of its own? Aliens were even in Predators own game Predator: Concrete Jungle. But I still think this FPS and RPG on Alien will kick ass! Seeing as Aliens also kick ass but Predator will always be my favorite. I am waiting for Alien 5 and Alien vs Predator 2 and Predator 3 or instead of Predator 3, a remake of Predator 1 (movies). But why a remake of number 1? That's stupid, Predator 1 was great. Sorry if I went off topic.
Hmmm. That's all I can say. We all know how most (if not ALL) movie-to-game transitions go... "Like donuts, and the possibility of more donuts to come" -Homer
It'd be interesting to see an Aliens game on a next gen system (crosses fingers for 360). But if they start taking "creative license" in the wrong direction, it can ruin the whole experience. IMO, if they want to do it right, they'll start you off as one of the last remaining colonists on LV-426. And no, not newt. Perhaps he/she dies before the marines get there, perhaps not. I've always wondered what went on before help arrived.
@Destroyeron13 By THE Aliens he is referring to Aliens from the Alien series of movies Real scary ones as opposed to generic aliens normally found in these types of games. If you're a little tyke, I suggest you get down to a vid store and get Alien (1979 I think) and Aliens (1986) - hell even Alien 3 (1992 I think) - but I'm probably the only person here who liked that :) Fantastic movies and superb for gaming as some games have proven - Activision (I had the Spectrum version not C64 Maxor127, screw 360 and PS3 that's a play-yard brawl :p ) Konami in the arcades and several others I can't be bothered to mention!
I also noted the name Gearbox Software on the side of my Halo Box next to Bungie ;) Awesome news if they can get it right. I really enjoyed the BIA series and the E3 clips using the new Unreal 3.0 engine look stunning. If we make the assumption that Gearbox will also use Unreal 3.0 engine for Aliens then we are in for a treat.
"Gearbox is best known for its work on the Brothers in Arms series" ...Really? I tend to think of Half Life Opposing Force.
yopuu IT BETER MBE AWSOME BECUASE IF DAY DISAPOINT ME AGAIN I BWOW DA BEDIN TU SMIDA WEES ....Huh? Is that even a language?
Gearbox also did the apparently forgotten port of Half-Life for the PS2, am I the only person that remembers that?
dang, hope they make some good games, they sound like they should have promise with the people who's making them
I hope it doesn't turn into Colonial Marines 2. But Gearbox has a reasonably good track record and they're working with a great license, more power to 'em.
this shows that sega knows what it is doing, or needs a lot of help getting out of its hole they dug for themselves
Now Alien will reborn as freakin' big franchise with Obsidian and Gearbox. They are also one of my favorite game developers in the world. Sega is doing a GREAT job in licensing franchise and choosing publisher, but now they'd better do, at least, normal advertising-Their advertising is, now, ABYSMAL. They already screwed teh M2TW, which is great sequel of best-seller game RTW. and Condemned, which is also a great and original horror FPS. They used all their marketing costs to crappy Full Auto.
Gearbox is a great developer.. We should all be excited about this one!! As far as Triple A titles... I can't say all the games that gearbox have been involved in are Triple A. A triple A title is more than just a good game. It is poised to be a huge seller and a system mover. The Triple A titles are games like MGS, Halo, Mario, Madden, PDZ, Gran Turismo, PGR, WWE, ect. Sure we could argue all day about how these games were awesome or how they were poop... That doesn't matter...or does it. My point is... Games like ICO or Viewtiful Joe are considered great games and rightfully so but these are not triple A titles. These are sleepers....and... you know what???? This whole thing I wrote is sooo gay I'm just gonna stop now.. Sega!
ATF2 http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/jamesbond007nightfire/index.html How about that one? Was it stellar? Was it Triple A? While most of Gearbox's efforts have been great, to claim that all have been triple A tittles is a bit off. Otherwise, I agree with what you wrote - minus the fact you said "You are one of the reasons I do not read the comments section on this site anymore. " If you apprently don't read them, why did you take the time to respond? Otherwise, a good week of news for fans of the Alien films.
