GDC 07: PS3 gamers to get "trophies"

They are just so trying to copy the 360 achievement system...and failing.

You know, for all of you guys complaining about originality... The PS3 now actually has it... motion sensoring and online awards. Tell me a system that has both to prove that those 2 things together don't make it itself original.

Some people seem to think that Nintendo invented 'motion senseors'... Yes they applied them well considering they were the first to do it, but are we really satisfied with the wii? Take that technology and improve on it. You can't complain about rip offs when companys not only take ideas, they make them better, competition between companies is great for gamers.

For those who claim this is ripping anything off, need to look at their own consoles. It is near impossible to create an idea which has never been touched before. Yes, this trophy system is SIMILAR to xbox live achievements, however, if ideas were never borrowed, there would be no progress. If we were to never "Copy" or whatever, you wouldn't have your xbox live. Trace it back as far as you like. Playstation and Xbox wouldn't be here if it weren't for the Black box, or Atari, or any of those. Just shut up, and maybe take it as a compliment if anything.

i just dont understand how people think its a ripoff of live. i also dont understand how ppl think sony ripped off the tilt controller. wii and ps3 came out on almost the same day, and the controllers dont function the same at all if you think about it.

psgored21 : because Microsoft didn,t copy Nintendo and Sony for the look of it's controll, heck, making a console is copying atari and coleco's. Everyone copies other's good idea's, that's marketing and business strategies, if it works for others, it should work for you too. Sony won't charge for online because they are against the idea (or believe it might attracts more peoples in the end). They are making some mmo style games for Ps3 which are gonna be free as well, saying that Home isn't as good as XBX LVIE when it's not out yet and you have no idea how it's really going to be is silly, anyway, I find these communities thingey a bit dumb. I use my console to play games, not to see who has more points then me or whatsoever, what's the big deal with these achievements and trophies anyway? once you have them, they are useless...

Trophies or accomplishment are pointless, I'd rather have Dante's sword as wearable for my avatar as a reward, or unlocking some clothing from a certain caracter from a game you reach the reward with.

Could not agree more Ratchetrulz. I got 360 PS3 n Wii - and play them for different reasons. I agree that the 360 is awesome for achievements (making me play COD4 on veteran...grrr) and now the PS3 gives gamers the chance to do the same.

jeez, it seems like every thread i go to it turns out to be a pointless console war.. little kids and their "loyalty" to their systems... why does it matter if Ps3 plays better than xbox 360, or Xbox 360 has better games... why cant people understand that they are both GREAT systems... p.s. Get it through your heads.

SPOILERS! Jay Allen, MGS4 didn't cross over. :) As of now, it is a PS3 exclusive. It has yet to be decided, however, if it'll go over to the 360. So it's currently a no-no. Oh, and I do think this is a knock-off (TO AN EXTENT) of the 360 Achievement system. I also own a 360, besides my PS3 and Wii, so don't call me some "damn fanboy".

Oh, and JayAllen is right on the money! I will be too busy "Gear"ing up for War for the second time that I won't have time to dance around like a fruit on PS home. Sony can GET LOST!

Finally a SIMS game that I dont have to pay for. LOL.

WOW... All you people admiring this like its something new. Sony is just trying to one-up on what 360 already has. This is just a virtual "3D" spin-off of the XBox Live Marketplace, each persons Gamer Profiles, their GamerScore, Achievement List, etc. Yeah I applaud Sony for finally coming out with something. Hell they need to with Microsoft releasing Windows Vista Games that allows PC users to play on Xbox Live too. Xbox Live is just getting bigger and bigger. Grand Theft Auto crossed over, Metal Gear crossed over, wont be long before I am fighting a Hellghast on my 360. Or maybe by that time I'll be spending my time fighting as Master Chief and wont have time to look at the PS3 or even think about walking around in a 3D trophy room.

ok first of allthe trophies idea sounds kinda cool but i really dont see people going to otehr peoples 'homes' just to view their trophies. It seems like a waste of time and long load screens unless they integrate it into the games itself. Like if you see a user online you should be able to click his name or soemthing to go directly to his trophies. 360 has that so should home. sony is copying so many things from microsoft and nintendo. if they want to expand on it they should keep the good parts of it at least. no one really cares how the picture of the achiement looks like they care about how good that achievment is hence they should implement that style in home trophies also

This is cool and if people think it's for young people only [too kiddie] then Nintendo is doomed. This is a good way to connect, a 3D world away from windows, sheets, etc. Unless a sceptic, no one can't hate this feature.

da-mn it i have heard enough. im done. anyone that thinks that sony isnt copying microsoft in some way is clearly delusional. im tried of this now. how can you say that trophies arent exactly the same thing as achievements? i mean come on now, when you havent gotten an achievement for something on the 360, the picture of that achievement isnt shown, instead A DA-MN TROPHY IS SHOWN! everyone knows that sony's online model wasnt anything close to perfect, and everyone knows that not having a unified friends list is a bastard to deal with and now instead of going after exclusive titles, i go after exclusive features? will you people see it as copying when the achievements and trophy requirements are the same? you wanna copy somethng? show me that you can play music off a external usb hard drive, while ripping music to the 360 hard drive, downloading that free south park hd and private chating all at the same time. and to say that its different because you have to invite someone to see it defeats the purpose completely, youre not supposed to hide your high score. its a high score, thats why you have leaderboards. so the strongest arguement that yall have is that its not copying because they are making it worse is asinine! enough already, work on getting games back on your system. oh yea and now that im thinking about it, wow has over 10 million paid subscribers, xbox is nearing 7.2 million, the playstation network has 650,000 free users....if the network actually becomes successful, do you really think they are going to keep it free? for network maintainance for Home its going to cost them a fortune, and they are already hemorraging money. its going to come out of your pocket one way or another. if it remains free, its going to because of thousand of microtransactions. lmao imagine a cover charge just to walk into the playstation store! lmao....

MS fans have enjoyed all the benefits to being first to market, now you get to see the downside of it... Everyone that comes after wants to, NEEDS TO , and gets to out-do you... Think about it. Which company was really resting on its laurels? People said it was Sony. I say Microsoft. They were content to just make a glorified version of the Xbox, instead of pushing the envelope. So what is the 360? A user-friendly graphics powerhouse almost tailor-made for people who like "arcadey" gaming (like shooters), just like the system before it. So everyone goes crazy for four weeks when the new shiny shooter comes out (like a Gears of War), then goes back to playing World of Warcraft on their PC until the next shiny shooter (PC gamers ruined console gaming, IMO). Can you blame Microsoft? NOBODY thought paying for an online service would work. MS proved them wrong. Many thought online gaming was wasted on console gamers. Wrong again. The problem is, when MS hit it big with Live, they only real way they "improved" it was to sell movie and TV shows on it. That was the big 360 innovation! When it's all said and done, this is why I think the PS3 can actually take market share back (because before I thougt it was lost 4-ever): ***The X360 and the Wii are pretty much the consoles that they are going to be for the rest of their life spans. With Home, Sony really showed that the extra $200 bucks wasn't just for a cheap Blu-ray player.***

Think of high scores in Pac Man. It's a natural evolution that when gamers get online that there is online achievements. MS just got to it first . It not a radical idea it's common sense that it would happen. As for the MII's rip off, go to digg.com. There are a couple of articles that shows that Sony had the idea at least since June '05. There is more to this industry than what people see from the outside. Just because someone releases an idea first doesn't always mean it was theirs first. anybody who thinks that this is a rip of mii, xbl, the sims or an mmorpg clearly doesn't understand it. it is part of the online community. just because it has avatars doesn't make it a rip of mii, just because you can walk around and talk to people that doesn't make it an rpg and just because you can get trophies does not make it a rip off of xbl.

Once again, I'm not impressed by Sony. Nothing ground breaking, nothing new at all. Home is also boring to me, a free MMORPG isn't my idea of a good online service.

I think it's pretty interesting to see how the trophies will look like...the excitement just keeps on coming!

Nintendo comes up with this thing called the Wii, and and interactive avatar called a Mii. Now, remember, this is a revolutionary idea, so Sony's kept its mouth shut. How did Nintendo come up with the Mii? themselves. you cant steal something unless if it isnt in existence. An idea cant be considered "stolen" if nothing is done to further its development. It just sits there gathering dust. Am i saying Nintendo "stole" the idea from Sony because they let it sit? Not in the least. because Sony kept its mouth shut. but then again Sony's been known to screw up in the past (OH boy has it ever). and a link to those articles would be nice considering you're convinced they prove nintendo's "theft".
