Preorders at retailer reportedly nixed due to game being shelved; Sony quickly denies rumors of game's demise.
Source: Message boards like NeoGAF lit up Thursday afternoon with reports that GameStop had called customers who preordered Sony's The Last Guardian on the PlayStation 3 to tell them the game was canceled.
What we heard: While retailers often inadvertently break news of a game's existence, they are rarely the most reliable source when it comes to a game's cancellation. However, it has been a tumultuous time for The Last Guardian of late, with the departure of Team Ico studio head Fumito Ueda, followed by news that executive producer Yoshifusa Hayama had left as well.
Even though Ueda had reportedly been committed to finish up work on the game on a freelance basis, the game's secretive history and virtual disappearance from the public eye (Sony last showed the game off in March) made a complete collapse and cancellation conceivable.
Although The Last Guardian was shown in trailer form for the first time at the 2009 Tokyo Game Show, Ueda had been working on Team Ico's PlayStation 3 debut since 2005. At the time, he said that the three years it took to make Shadow of the Colossus was too long and that he hoped to release his next game in less time. At the 2010 Tokyo Game Show, a late 2011 release window was attached to The Last Guardian, but that was retracted the following spring.
Fortunately, Sony representatives were quick to address the rumor almost as soon as it sprung up.
The official word: "It's not true. The game is still in development. It hasn't been canceled."--A Sony representative.
Bogus or not bogus: Bogus, thankfully.
Notice whenever something completely false happens, the companies responed to the rumor with a real answer But when the rumor is something that could spoil what they were planning before it's announcement, they all of a sudden never comment on rumors or speculation
Any news about this game?? Like for FF vs XIII. Those 2 are part of the main reasons why I buy the Playstation!!
seriously, ps3 is so cheap, it's even cheaper than vita :p. on topic though, I'm glad it wasn't canceled. ICO and Shadow of the colossus were one of the best games of all times.
Too much ambition, too much planned = money ran out? - i sure hope not, its sad that companies that just churn out games fast based on a template will make more money than projects like this.
I hope you all understand that without Fumito Ueda and Yoshifusa Hayama, this game will not turn out to be the same. Even if Ueda is still "finishing" it in freelance, he will not dedicate the same amount of attention to this project. And needless to say, future projects from Team ICO will not be the same. They made 2 great games before so I kind of wander what the real reason for severing their connection with Sony was...
I bought a PS3 late in 2010 because I thought the Last Guardian will be out in early 2011. I hope that the long waiting game will be worth it. I'm a fan of the developer's previous works; ICO and Shadow of the Colossus.
@Elann2008 Skyrim was in development for 4 or 5 years before we even had an announcement. From playing the masterpieces that were Ico and Shadow of the Colossus I can assure the only reason it's so hush hush is because the creator truly takes his time perfecting his games. Patience is key.
I blooming well hope it's not cancelled! This game was one of the main reasons I bought a PS3 last year and I was gutted when it was put back further. Granted, other PS3 exclusives and Blu-Ray are also as good a reason as any for owning a PS3, and the HD remakes of Ico & Shadow Of The Colossus are a real special bonus. But it this game is cancelled I'll be [pun alert!] in-console-able...
Wow, if this game is cancelled, Agent must not have even started dev (this game has been a news jugernaut compared to the "Working on Agent" then nothing from Agent)
@Elann2008 We can hope it isn't Duke Nukem Forever. That game was god awful. Some games are better off just being dropped, but this isn't one of them :P
I wouldn't be surprised if it was truly canceled though. This game has taken way too long.. it's not an MMOG. And it isn't Duke Nukem Forever.. so what's the excuse? After 3 years, I tend to think a game has issues in the creative process. In 2 years, I expect massive news and marketing for big title games. The Last Guardian has been too hush-hush for my liking. Being too secretive hurts you more because then some gamers will soon forget it among the huge cloud of available and upcoming games.
Duke had more power as vaporware... last guardian... I think it will get pulled and released as a vita title.
wow, didnt they announce this game when ps3 was released or sth ? i bet the hardware can't run all those details on the creature
guaranteed release day purchase if we don't support games like these we will only be left to play grand theft auto 40 and halo 67 we need variety like this in the gaming world hopefully this game does not get cancelled
Most interesting game of this generation getting canceled? I highly doubt that will be the case, but Ueda and the director should have finished this and I would love to buy this as a day 1 purchase, glad it's not getting canceled.
Sure we all r excited for the last guardian and sure ico and shadow were awesome games, but I don?t understand people who say things like ? I got a ps3 for this game? or ?this game is the only reason I bought a ps3? Really ???? What about MGS4, Uncharted trilogy, Sly 4 All the R&C games Killzone 3 , and many more ?. Really ?? the last guardian is ur only reason ??? theres more to the ps3 than only 1 game much more...
Some comments refer to some grand conspiracy between Gamestop and Gamespot to kill this game... really? Really? Does anyone honestly feel as though a gaming website and a game selling retailer has ANYTHING to gain from a AAA release being cancelled? C'mon now. Use your melon for good not evil.
@stick2zero As much as I'd like to believe that, it has me really worried that it could go into development hell.
EDIT: actualy it's this: ." What exactly were Gamestop hoping to achieve by doing this? Bait Sony into pushing it to a release? Nah. Convince customers not to invest in the game and instead use their deposit to buy pre-owned games? "- lhomity
The official word: "It's not true. The game is still in development. It hasn't been canceled."--A Sony representative. . AHHHHHHHHHH *sigh* . I can rest easy now, seriously this has been my nb1 MOST EXPECTED game of this generation. . It has the potential to be a timeless classic. Hopefully the departure of Ueda and Hayama didn't destabilize the dev team. .
Let's wait and see. It will be cancelled, trust me. If games like these could sell at the market like most of brainless FPS out there, it would have been released 2 years ago.
I can't tell you how much I want this game to come out, SotC was one of the greatest games I've ever played, this developer is capable of so much and it sucks that so much crap has been flung their way lately.
I want the game, but I'm not gonna hold blind faith towards it. Either side can be telling the truth, Gamestop might be right and it's cancelled, Sony might be still developing it. But neither side is giving any definite proof. Someone already said it, but if it comes out great, if it doesn't, water under the bridge. At least this time PS3 owners get a Tales of exclusive like how the 360 had Tales of Vesperia...
