Top executive at speciality retailer says new platform from either Microsoft or Sony will launch next year, with the other following in 2014.
The Wii U will usher in the next generation of consoles later this year, but when will new platforms from Microsoft and Sony arrive? According to GameStop CEO Paul Raines, either the next Xbox or PlayStation 4 will arrive in 2013, but not both.
"This week, I'm getting a lot of rumors that are very interesting about 2013," Raines told Polygon. "We have not been expecting two more consoles in 2013. We're expecting Wii U this holiday, another one next year, and another one in '14. These rumors change every week, but we're hearing more about next year."
In June, a 56-page document reportedly stemming from Microsoft detailed the Xbox 720, indicating the console would launch in 2013 at $299 bundled with a new iteration of Kinect, among other features. As for Sony, the company had previously said it does not expect to announce its new hardware until after Microsoft does.
Not all agree with Raines' prediction of only one new console in 2013. The analyst consensus is that new platforms from Microsoft and Sony will be on store shelves during the back-half of next year.

First of all this 2 powerhouse company's have changed gaming for all us gamers world wide. But to us we love when we see the competition and it gives us joy to see new exclusives for these consoles. But the new 720 and ps4 will not be in are price range. so that long line we are use to will be shorter then usual. Second most of the world isnt doing so well so not many can afford a 500-600dollar Plus console. Just saying :p
PS4 is not good, Sony already failed on their PS3, region locking DLC and not allowing you to continue save game data with all your games on another region account screwed themselves over. Not to mention the money they lost they are now weak. Sony also have way more over priced DLC than Xbox360. Sony were never stronger than microsoft. I have all consoles in existence to 2012 but will have to say no for the first time to the ps4, Sony scammed me with over £500 worth of DLC they said no to refund me or transfer it to USA region DLC for my USA games. Xbox720 will be the winner yet again. Sony died with the PS2's end, the ps2 was the best console in the world.

Personally I think that having staggered launches is good for everybody. That way people have the time to get their money right if they wish to buy multiple consoles, but the launches and game releases themselves aren't crowding each other out. By the time the next 8th-gen system arrives, we'll have had plenty of time to dissect the Wii U and make educated comparisons. And hopefully we'll avoid having another six-year glut with no new home consoles.
i can't wait for PS4, i hope it don't cost too much (i could not pay longer than 500$ for it)how many GHz it will and how many cores it will have? and how about the ram and responding time?
At that price point its not going to be a powerful system, unless they plan on taking a decent loss on the system.

I just wish sony would invest a little more on hardware and graphics perfomance and less promo for the ps4. I'm sorry but the ps3 seem's to be pretty sluggish at times on what should be easy proccess's. For a, "Next Gen Console."

Sony will not release their new system next year or the year after that. They just came out with another PS3 Slim. Its a slimmer version of the original PS3 slim. If they are going to come out with a new console, I would say it will come out around December 2015 or Summer 2016......And Xbox...who cares about them go Sony!

I'm not expecting neither I'm interested in new gen consoles until 2014. By the time 2014 arrives, I hope my wallet allows me to be interested enough on them.
I'd say that both Microsoft and Sony, despite being so quiet about it, will have their new systems out by the end of 2014 at the latest. I'm not sure on 2013, I think it would be awfully fast for Microsoft to announce the next Xbox at E3 2013 and then have it released the same year, but we will have to see.
One of the new consoles may come out in 2013, but without any good titles to play, it may be years before the gamers pass on the next generation.
If there are new consoles on the shelves by the end of 2013, I'll be mildly surprised. But I can say with confidence that they'll be here before the end of 2014. #obvious
With how disappointing this console generation has been, I doubt I will buy the next gen versions for a few years. When I do though, it will most likely be the PS4 (or Orbis, whatever it'll called) because Sony tends to have a better selection of the nich games I enjoy. Microsoft sometimes releases them, Like Agarest War, but they're mainly focused on the mainstream market.

The only reason to purchase an Xbox 360 as of right now is because it's controller is more FPS friendly, and as someone who cares about more than just FPS's i'll gladly take my Playstation. Better games, who really cares about much else? Better games...

@deadkingdg err yeah i hate to break it to you but nintendo wii-U is out, and 2013 will be microsofts new one, 2014 will be Sony's last attempt at a console since they may or may not die before its release, but one things for certain they will no longer bother with Consoles and games by 2015. Since thats the reason they lost millions and billions of cash.

Sony's gaming division is one of its most profitable, so I doubt they would stop before the whole company dies. It's mostly the electronic departments that is in the hole.
1 Like I'm pretty sure one of them will launch next year. Most likely the XBox 720 since developers have already confirmed they had dev kits months ago. Several of these developers have said the jump in power and speed is 3-4x's what we are using now. We just have to wait until next years E3, which is 9 months way. I'm in no rush to get one, but at $300 it will be a steal. I expect Microsoft will do a price cut at the end of this year when Halo 4 launches.
@blackace Devs always get dev kits way before the announcement. I work in the game industry (but I work on iPhone/Android games) and I have a lot of friends at big studios such as EA and Ubi. They had the Vitas and 3DS kits before they were announced. Unless a console is announced by the end of the year (which I doubt), no console is coming in 2013. I'm pretty sure they'll be announced at next E3.
2 Like The funny thing is that out of the consoles remaining this gen the PS3 has some "untouched" potential left in it. If I were Sony I'd put the PS4 on hold until 2015. The PS3 is a beast.
@Wisdominsilence The ps3 is dying wake up, developers are set for Nintendo wii-U and the next Xbox console. PS3 was too annoying to program and thus why its dead as only few companies could actually do anything good with it.
@Diasflare @Wisdominsilence Look at God of War 3, and Killzone 2/3. They look damn near as good as PC games. Yes the PS3 is a challenge to program for, but as time goes on programmers are starting to figure it out more and more so we'll get to see a steady improvement in the graphics department as far as PS3 exclusives go. Many developers who do multi-console games are just too lazy to finely tune their games to properly take advantage of the hardware. Instead they just "slap" it on there as quick as possible; this being the only major reason you'll ever see an Xbox game with better graphics than a PS3 game.
@Wisdominsilence LOL@ PS3 has untouched potential. Did you see Dark Souls on the PS3 vs. PC? PS4 can't get here fast enough! My wallet is itching. PS3 is obsolete pile. The original artists for Dark Souls couldn't show us the real game because PS3's GPU is from 2006 and it only has 256mb of VRAM.Here is what Dark Souls really looks like - exact same game just turned up the resolution on the PC.

PS3 has nothing left. The chief technical officer of Metro 2033 said that the Tri-Core Xbox360 CPU is only 70-85% as fast as 1 Core i7 core. We can now buy a 4-core i7 CPU easily. PS4 can't get here fast enough. Once you see next generation games, you'll realize how obsolete PS3 really is.

@RitsukoEX I kinda have to agree with him on this developers are still doing amazing things with the PS3 things that just a couple years ago ppl thought wasn't possible on the PS3 I mean look at the Last of Us it looks 4x as good as Uncharted 3 which just came out last year but some how Naughty Dog was able to get more out of the PS3 so yea I think the PS3 at least still has a little oomf left lol.
