GameSpot Mobile, iPhone channels now live
Full coverage of gaming on iPhone/iPod Touch, BlackBerry, Palm Pre, Google Android, and Windows Mobile devices begins today.
In recognition of the growing mobile games market, GameSpot has launched its new Mobile Games channel. The new section of the site has listings for over 10,000 mobile games on the five major mobile operating systems: iPhone, BlackBerry, Palm WebOS for the Pre, Google Android, and Windows Mobile.
Given its burgeoning catalog--21,178 "Game & Entertainment Titles" and counting--the iPhone OS will be a particular focus, receiving its own navigation tab on the site. Apple has sold nearly 22 million iPhones worldwide to date, including 5.2 million in the April-June quarter alone--a 626 percent increase from the same quarter in 2008. The iPhone OS is also used by the iPod Touch line of multimedia handhelds.
Besides offering information on mobile games, operating systems, US carriers, and handsets, the GameSpot Mobile and iPhone channels will feature primers for each OS to help new and prospective handset owners start playing games on each system. The channel will also offer news on developments in the mobile gaming world and editorial features, as well as reader reviews and community support.
Last but not least, the GameSpot Mobile and iPhone will be offering editorial reviews of a variety of high-profile titles, provided by official content partner Slidetoplay.com. These include the iPhone games Madden NFL 10, Wolfenstein RPG, Tiger Woods PGA Tour, Modern Combat: Sandstorm, and Need for Speed: Undercover. Check back over the coming weeks for a steady stream of new reviews, features, and other content for mobile platforms.
and just BTW... WHERE IS SYMBIAN? It is only the largest mobile platform with over 60% installed base. Guitar Hero, Madden, Rock Band...all these major games available... my son plays them on his phone. No Symbian coverage at all?
I am just saying... iPhone is a mobile platform, it should be just another category under Mobile. If they put up a Console category... and then singled out PS3 in its own and put XBOX360 and Wii buried under the Console channel... There would be total outrage... and there should be for this move too. Either put iPhone under mobile.. or make a Symbian, Blackberry and Win Mobile channel on the main page. PERIOD.
Sweet. I just bought an new Ipod this week.
Nice, it was only a matter of time, the iPhone has so many great games that can compete with console titles, glad to see Gamespot giving me the news and reviews :)
Well its just natural. With the new age of mobile devices soon enough they will catch up to PCs and handheld platforms. iPhone 3GS has 833 mhz CPU and is capable of producing PSP quality graphics (Dexter, NOVA); the fact that 3G network allows for internet access virtually anywhere makes it just this much better.
"The iPhone gets the most attention. Every developer wants their app for that." its because its cheap, on avarage its only $30,000
To be honest, I'd rather want to see Gamespot reviewing the categories it presents thoroughly first. They're skipping tons of PC games nowadays and pretty much all PSP games. I have an iPod Touch and 90% of it is garbage not worth downloading, rarely comes along a game that even deserves to read a review of.
@LordAndrew You're right. The iPhone gets the most attention. Every developer wants their "app for that." Other phone platforms have really been left to the open source communities to come up with applications and games. I don't mind too much. I understand what is so attractive about the other platforms. I'm just saying that it's a good thing that GameSpot is doing these reviews because I know how hard it is to sift through the crap. Even with ratings on the App Store it's hard to know what's really good and what's not. And there are so many apps coming out so quickly that many of the good apps/games get pushed back into the dark voids of the catalog before they even get noticed. I've always got GameLoft to fall back to for good Java games. :) _
i get -5 because i tell people where the real info is?? makes sense. Just to clarify its not my site at all im just a lowly member. But there are loads of devs that go on there so you can talk to them. Also all the latest news goes there.
@condelirios: Sure, more blackberry units are sold than iPhones, so why does iPhone get it's own tab? How many games are there for iPhone? How many for Blackberry? It's not even close. That's why.
Great that they did it,but they should've done it earlier...

I wouldn't mind this so much if it was sectioned off in it's own space rather than being mixed in with the regular content, the review section is already flooded with it, it's just more clutter to go through. I have zero interest in phone games.
wow people really dont know whats on the app store. I actually love that people say stuff like how they suck even though they dont know the games at all. My ipod touch is filled some brilliant games that are of really high quality. now back on topic i hope that they do some decent reviews and dont just let this area go to waste
Please please please do a review on solitaire & sudoku & pacman!!! :P
@Hvac0120 They covered J2ME mobile games several years ago, and it wasn't something they particularly enjoyed. There may be decent games still coming out for the platform, but it seems developers have shifted most of their efforts to other mobile platforms.
The iPhone/touch's graphics are NOT the same level as the PSP. I would agree with it being better than the DS, but not any more than the the PSP. Try comparing God of War:Chains of Olympus with Hero of Sparta, and you'll see what I mean.
Sweet! Now i can get some decent reviews before i App Store it up.
My phone does Java (J2ME). The games are pretty good. The iPhone has a slight step up since it is a platform that has a set specification that developers can aim for and thus isn't dumbed down any to work across multiple phone platforms. I'm going to get an iPhone eventually, but it will probably be another 1-2 years. At this point I am waiting for the iPhone 2 to come out. I'm guessing this will happen in 2010 or 2011 which is right about when I'll be ready to trade up. For now, my current phone is touch with a slide-out qwerty, which I really like. I game on my phone casually while waiting for a class to start, waiting in line, waiting for food to cook, or waiting for a download to complete. This is the type of gaming I see as a good thing for mobile phones. I don't see the iPhone as a mobile gaming device, even though it does gaming better than most phones. I am glad, though that GameSpot is going to start providing insite on these games, though because it's really hard to know if any of these games are any good. None of the current sites really provide good feedback on which apps are the best. Hopefully GameSpot can address some other mobile platforms like J2ME, but I iPhone and Windows Mobile is a good start. _
I like the iPhone\iPod Touch for a quick gaming fix on the go, but there are just soooo many horrid games out there it's mind blowing. For every 1 good game there's about 100+ bad ones. Also, the controls can be unwieldy at times for certain games.
Will I be seeing Blackberry game news intertwined with regular videogames news here? I hope not. Not interested on reading about the next sequel to Solitare App :-S... not that I'll be reading it but more news for me to weed through to find the regular vid game news (and there'll probably be less space for it on screen with this stuff).
Cool! Way to go! IS there any way to make good quality video reviews of App Store games?
WHY DOES iPHONE GET A TAB and BLACKBERRY DOESN'T? BLACKBERRY outsells the iPhone 10 to 1. Come on Gamespot...don't be a part of the HYPE.
once again the casual gamers get there way again. so sad :(

I love the false assumption here that if something does two things, it must do them both badly. That'd be like saying that PC games must suck because PCs can also be used to create spreadsheets or make VOIP calls over Skype. Some iPhone games are among the most addictive and fun I've played in years. Some of them actually are better using the iPhone's interface than pretty much any other. I wonder how many of the "real" gamers here bemoan the disappearance of old school point and click adventure games. Guess what? The iPhone has proven to have such a perfect interface for such games that adventure games have come back with a vengeance to the platform. Flight Control and Harbor Master both have simple interfaces and control but have become some of the most addictive games I've played in recent memory. Oh, and hey, I can use it as a phone as well! And I manage my three email accounts on it. And I can check Facebook and LinkedIn easily. And record a video and upload it directly to YouTube. And listen to my music library and podcasts. And so on. I guess the downside to iPhone gaming is that.. um.. games on the iPhone are typically much cheaper than games for any other gaming platform?
if i want to play portable games ill buy a PSP. i wouldn't spend money on mobile games that are limited on controls and dont have the kind of power to run games.
@Airek49 I agree completely. If I wanted to play a portable game I'd buy a system that does that, like the DS or PSP. Why would I want some paired down game with half assed controls forced on my phone. I use my phone for *talking to people* shocking, I know.
woot!! thats one of my biggest problems I always buy new apps like crack and end up not liking them
About time! The content looks awesome so far but the design looks like crap, I think it would have been better to stick with the normal Gamespot style.
@mjc0961 The games being reviewed are not shovelware. The fine folks at Slide to Play have already filtered through the games available in the App Store and determined which ones are worth playing. They'll only post reviews for the games that would be (or perhaps should be) of interest to GameSpot's readers. @Airek49 Garbage will not be reviewed. Also, if you read the Under Review blog you will see this: "Also, please note that GameSpot does not currently plan to post new mobile reviews every day, but rather, in regular updates throughout the year."

Annoying. There are too many mobile games to be reviewed like this. The reviews page will now be flooded (as it is already) with garbage.
Good move, Gamespot. Before know I'd been having to go to other sites to get my mobile reviews.
Just in time! I got an iPhone a couple weeks ago, and have been looking for a trusted source of info and reviews.
About time. It was looking like Gamespot was gonna miss the boat on this one with quality games already out there and no recognition on this site. Good to see that they're planning on doing it right, though.
About time you made an iPhone Games section!
nice should help me with reviews on what good Iphone games to get, because that library is growing, and fast
I predicted this would happen the moment I got my first iPhone. There was a lot of negative feedback from hardcore gamers, some positive. I'm here to say.......I told you so. (to the naysayers) This makes my day. : P I still play 95% of all portable games on my PSP and DS, but the iPhone definitely is good because I always have it with me outside on a day-to-day basis.
I'm glad they didn't just review IPhone games, I use android..
gj gamespot
Awesome. :)
About time...they already have pages made for IP games and other mobile games.
Glad to see a name that I trust ranking the games, and that you're not limiting your scope to just the iPhone.
Nice
@mjc0961- So cell phone games aren't real games? FYI, the entire Assassin's Creed DS game is downloadable as an iPhone app. They may have not been too significant before, but the iPhone is becoming sort of like a handheld Wii for indie developers. It provides a unique control system (as long as they don't resort to trying to put nonresponsive "buttons" on the screen) and in terms of graphics it can easily best the DS and almost match the PSP. I'd definitely consider it a viable gaming system, and that's part of Apple's new "Next level fun" campaign for the iPod Touch.
See this would be cool if I played cell phone games, get me a portable is all I gotta say. But for those who do have a phone that actually will get good games, this is good for you.
I'm sorry, I thought the name of this site was GameSpot, not PhoneSpot. Who cares about that shovelware? And an iPhone channel? It belongs in the mobile section with all the other phones that don't even belong here in the first place.
Very cool, it is nauseating on how many iphone games are released. @x2x3x2 I think there's some litigation in the works concerning disparaging comments gamespot made in 2003 concerning the NGAGE. But really, Nokia has already shot themselves in the foot when it comes to gamers.
