Game Arts founder dead at 45

By Jonathan Leo Toyad

Cause of G-Mode CEO and founder Takeshi Miyaji's passing not revealed; previous company known for creating Grandia and Lunar series.

Last Friday was a sad day for Japanese role-playing game fans. G-mode CEO Takeshi Miyaji, who was also well known for starting up game development company Game Arts, passed away on the July 29. Miyaji was 45 years old.

According to the recent statement on G-mode's site, the cause and circumstances of the death weren't stated. His former position as CEO will be taken up by Gaia Holdings CEO Ryu Okoriyama.

Takeshi Miyaji started Game Arts back in 1985 alongside his brother Yoichi Miyaji, who is the current CEO of the company. Game Arts is well known in the gaming community for creating games like Thexder (PC), Silpheed (Sega CD), and Gun Griffon (Sega Saturn), as well as the Lunar and Grandia series. A few staff members of Game Arts also helped developed Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii.

Miyaji founded G-mode in 2000, which focused on developing mobile games in Japan. The company acquired a number of Data East titles for porting, including Bad Dudes vs. Dragon Ninja, Joe & Mac, and Magical Drop.

This is terrible... R.I.P. Miyaji-san. I absolutely love Grandia, it's one of my all-time favorites.

@dukenukem11 That's an illogical and naive statement. Having sympathy for the death of a video game artist is not indicative of crassness. Volunteerism / social awareness and engaging in entertainment news are not mutual exclusives. For all you know, many people here who frequent Gamespot are military (like myself), volunteers, community organizers, or civil servants in some capacity.

Sad day indeed R.I.P you made some amazing games that i still have.

Sorry for his familys loss... Grandia was a great series, but at least he paid no part in creation of Gungriffon on Xbox - that version sucked sooo bad...

@dukenukem11 If we were talking about World Hunger, Corruption. Maybe. But that's not what we are talking about here. Stop going off-topic. Besides, whats so wrong about paying respects to a man who clearly made an impact on our gaming life. Just because we mourn his death doesn't mean we are insensitive to our surroundings.

@dukenukem11 Dude, we are not God, we are not omnipotent, we can't know about every person that dies in the World. You're completely missing the point here, don't come here saying those things just because you want attention.

This is really bad news... I enjoyed the first Grandia and Lunar: Silver Star Story all the way through. The World of gaming really loses a lot with his death. R.I.P

Meh, I really don't care..... Also on a side note, I like how everyone is like o noes! He dieds, RIP my friend! Like you guys know him.... Gimme a break.... People die all the time but you don't hear anyone saying that about an african child, or perhaps anther child in a third world country, or even an orphan child here in the United States who had just died. You guys..... I swear... Such crass....

im immensely saddened by this. although the sega cd game silpheed was a decent game too, saturn games like gungriffon and grandia were big symbols during my saturn gaming days. to this day, i have never bought more games for a system than the saturn and reminders of games like this is just bringing it all back. thanks for the memories mr miyaji and i hope youre having fun in that big game developer studio in the sky.

r.i.p. man, i hate how geniuses of whatever form be art, science, math, etc. they always die young. i always think of it like they accomplish in their small amount of time what it takes us 80 or 90 years to do, and so they finish their lifetime's contribution a lot quicker

Grandia and Lunar were amazing series'. I loved them, and anytime a major gaming head dies, I'm saddened.

super lame, the worst part is that this isn't exactly an isolated incident. the japanese should be proud of their 28 hour a day work ethic but everybody needs time off to relax

Man 45 is so young for a man to die, I just recently got Grandia through the PSN, good stuff man. R.I.P. Takeshi Miyaji.
