Galactic Reign goes live

Turned-based multiplayer strategy game from Resident Evil dev and Microsoft Game Studios for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 7 and 8 now available.

Galactic Reign has arrived. After much secrecy, Microsoft today officially announced and released the turn-based multiplayer strategy game for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 7 and 8.

The game was a co-development between Microsoft Game Studios and Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City studio Slant Six Games, which made the title's movie sequences.

In Galactic Reign, players and their opponents will colonize planets, design ships, and build fleets as they fight to control the galaxy.

Microsoft says ship design is "crucial," as players must predict what their opponent is building and design a model to counter it.

Battle sequences are rendered in the cloud, Microsoft said, showing results through cinematic movie sequences. Players can take turns whenever they like, with the game advancing once both sides have submitted their actions.

In addition to a head-to-head mode, Galactic Reign features a range of single-player missions.

A Galactic Reign trial, which includes one game species, is available to download for free. Players can unlock all three species through an additional $5 purchase. Galactic Reign also includes Xbox Live achievements and multiple leaderboards.

Article also doesn't clearly state it's pay once to play both WP and Win8.  You can play on one, pause, and pick up on the other.

Meh, same old. I still play sins of a solar empire. I don't really care for the multiplayer in this kind of pvp game.

So it's basically a 4X version of Gratuitous Space Battles?

@Tripwolf Amen to that.

@MJ-X @Tripwolf Can someone please tell me why it's trendy to hate Microsoft?  Linux will always be a niche for PCs.  The world runs on Windows workstations.  Windows even has a higher market share than Linux in servers (not including all UNIX types though)

@UCFknighthood @MJ-X @Tripwolf They didn't get memo 3 years ago when everyone else stopped hating on them for vista.

Also there are some strange and poorly reasoned ideas out there about MS trying to go toward a closed ecosystem with the store. Not going to happen. Then there are people who think everything should be open source, which is ok but some people need to earn a wage off this stuff.

People didn't like the monopolistic practices of ms in the 90s to early 2000s but haven't realised they've changed a lot since then.

Looks like a crappy wattered-down version of endless space...

Except the battle scenes look a bit better..

@LtReviews Endless space was pretty cool, but I just couldn't get into it like I did with Civilization V. I've spent countless hours conquering the world in that game. I'm still waiting for that awesome turn based strategy game where I get to conquer the galaxy. Is Galactic Reign available on Windows 7 (not phone)? I'd like to at least try it out the free demo/trial.

@LtReviews Yeah, there doesnt seem to be any single player skirmish type modes available for the turn based campaigns, only multiplayer. The single player so far is just a bunch of (so far) simple combat challenges that seem mostly only to show off the battle scenes, which I must say, look pretty awesome.

Sounds cool, I'm going to check it out.

Battles look nice, but are achingly slow to process, taking several minutes render in the cloud. I wish I could just have my computer render it locally, its certainly fast enough -_- Definitely a mobile game though due to the pacing. No body wants to sit there for several minutes staring at a battle screen that just says "processing, this may take a few minutes."

I have both WP8 and Windows 8 and I don't see this on the store.... >.>

@Grayhawk2 It's a gradual rollout, it may take a bit before it'll show up in your region.  Have you tried doing a search in the store? It may show up in search before you see it in the regular store listings.

@BarbarossaBlade @Grayhawk2  Yeah I eventually was able to find it. Strange that it wasn't listed under "New Releases" and running a search on "galactic reign" pulled up nothing, whereas just searching for "galactic" pulls it right up O.o

Looks like Endless Space with smaller universes and better battle simulation.  Oh yeah, you also NEED W8....

@Yuusha09 And an opponent - no AI.  They didn't say anything about different races, either, so I guess it's just left vs. right.  Movement is stuck to the lines defined on screen.  Heck, is there even a technology tree?

I'd try it if it was on Android.

@FAIL_TR0LL @cornbread444 I love Office. But the marketplace for W8 phones is typically skeletal.

Yeah, the app selection is usually the obstacle that most people have trouble getting past. That doesn't bother me, but it would be nice if we wouldn't get apps that are stripped down when compared to their ios and android counterparts.

I'll have to check this game out. If it was deemed worthy of a Gamespot article then it must have something going for it.

Hey guys, the game is set to go live at midnight UTC, so it will be available in about 45 minutes.

Looks okay. I only have windows 7 though and won't be upgrading for a few years so this is going to be a pass for me.

@vihazur It's sold over the Windows Store, which isn't on Win7.

@magicaldropking As if buying Windows 8 is somehow bad?

Windows 8 is awesome, much faster than Win7 and has a more robust/usable start menu AND handles multi-monitor setups much better than Win7.
