Gabe Newell headed to AIAS Hall of Fame

Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences inducting Valve cofounder as 17th member of Hall of Fame.

Valve founder Gabe Newell has been named to the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences' Hall of Fame, the group announced today.

Newell will become the 2013 AIAS Hall of Fame inductee for his leadership at Valve, the company that created the Source game engine, Steam, and franchises like Half-Life, Counter-Strike, Left 4 Dead, Portal, and Team Fortress. The AIAS said these products and properties have "done much to push the interactive entertainment industry forward."

Newell will become the 17th member of the AIAS Hall of Fame. He follows last year's inductee, Epic Games chief technology officer Tim Sweeney, as well as BioWare founders Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka (2011), Mark Cerny (2010), and Bruce Shelley (2009).

"Gabe is one of the most cherished and respected figures in the industry not only for his technological innovations in advancing many of today's highly successful video games, but also for his unique stance towards leadership and management," said AIAS president Martin Rae in a statement. "Gabe's vision for the interactive industry has created lasting effects that have completely reshaped this generation's digital distribution model, paving the way for independent developers and creating an invaluable service for consumers. It is a great honor to have Gabe inducted into the Academy's Hall of Fame."

Prior to founding Valve in the summer of 1996, Newell was employed at Microsoft for 13 years.

According to the AIAS, induction into the Hall of Fame is "bestowed on game creators who have been instrumental in the development of highly influential games and moving a particular genre forward." Newell will be inducted by Epic Games president Mike Capps at the 16th annual Interactive Achievement Awards, set for February 7 at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. As in previous years, the ceremony will be part of the D.I.C.E. Summit, which Newell will also provide the keynote address for.

Previous AIAS Hall of Fame inductees include Shigeru Miyamoto (Mario, Zelda), Sid Meier (Civilization), Will Wright (SimCity, the Sims), and Peter Molyneux (Fable). A full list of Hall of Famers along with their contributions to the industry is available at the AIAS website.

they should have held the induction until HL3 is released.

i cant view valve or the gaben the way i used to and hold them in the same respect since they have effectively abandoned their identity as a video game developer.

there is not a single video game in valve's production pipeline. anyone hoping for l4d3 or portal 3...or ANYTHING other than CS:GO or DOTA2...you might want to forget about it.

valve is no longer a video game developer. they are a software developer. their stance on games becoming "user generated content" was an epiphany they had when they implemented the trading system, as well as the steam workshops, into TF2.

it is their way of passing the buck, which fills their pockets at the expense of its community.

nothing more.

The Half-Life series is amazing. And Steam has been a blessing to gaming, the PC (including Mac and Linux) scene, and overall entertainment. Both industry big wigs and indie devs can reach a huge audience thanks to Steam.

Congrats, Gabe, you've earned it.

Did they deliberately pick a picture of gabe with a beehive, or was that just to elaborate his descent into craziness? :P  He's like an american Peter Molyneux.

Gabe has been the number one industry figure I have respected for years now. Even more than Miyamoto, and Miyamoto is amazing. Gaben Newell is just a great, brilliant man who truly cares about his company, employees and customers. His dedication shows in the quality of Valve's games and the user base centric design philosophy. He is man that would choose innovation over selling out and would make his customers happy before making a buck off of them. Congratulation Gabe, you deserve every bit of this honor.

@bongsyas_23 The guy made some of the best games ever back in the old days, I was hoping he'd do so again with 22 Cans but so far all we've got was a Cube... ugh.

That's 2004, back then he was involved with many innovative and influential projects, that's Black & White, Original Fable, Populous, Dungeon Keeper, Theme Park, The Movies and Syndicate.

He's starting to lose his reputation when he sold his Company (Lionhead) to Microsoft (that's 2006) then start churning Fables and stopped to innovate, at Microsoft he spent his time doing a lot of interview and presentation rather than developing the games.

Congrats to Newell: "Newell will become the 17th member of the AIAS Hall of Fame."

Newell joined entertainment history with his brother, Jabba the Hut.

Oh holy father who art in Valve, hallowed by thy sales,

Give us this day our daily deal,

And forgive us our piratings,

As we forgive those who pirate against us,

And lead us not into Origin,

But deliver us from EA,

For thine is the graphics,

The platform, and the goatee,

Forever and ever,

Gaben.

@Wladxq It will never happen its in the same boat as the FF7 remake, Final Fantasy Versus, and many other "games". Oh well life goes on some advice, forget about them until that day you walk into a store and see it.

spikepigeo

@HonorOfGod  @Wladxq Oh it'll happen.  Valve is one of the smarter development and publishing houses out there. You think they don't realize the potentially record breaking gold that is HL3?  From a purely business standpoint it would be absolutely manic to neglect the continuation of their greatest asset -- hell, PC gaming's greatest asset!
