Forza Motorsport 5 will run in 1080p at 60fps

But Microsoft says it won't force developers to adhere to frame rates or resolutions.

Turn 10 Studios' upcoming Xbox One racer Forza Motorsport 5 will run at 60 frames per second in native 1080p resolution, the studio has confirmed.

Speaking in an interview with GameSpot about the pressure of developing a Forza Motorsport in time for the Xbox One launch later in 2013, Turn 10 Studios' content director John Wendel said, "I believe we're uniquely positioned to deliver on that challenge. We're a huge epic game that's going to be running at 1080p, 60fps on the next-gen console, so it's an incredible opportunity on one hand, but you have to be incredibly flexible and agile and self-aware on the other hand."

Elsewhere, in an interview with the latest issue of UK gaming magazine Edge, Microsoft Studios vice president Phil Spencer said that Microsoft will not force its Xbox One developers to adhere to specific frame rates or resolutions.

"It's important we give creators the best tools to create the best experience possible," said Spencer, "and I don't think that platform holders can dictate what the internal frame buffer size should be."

"Forza 5 runs at 60 frames per second, but other people will make different trade-offs," said Spencer, adding that "resolution is not the thing that maximises beauty."

2011's Forza Motorsport 4 ran at 60fps in 720p, but last year's spin-off, Forza Horizon, dropped to a frame rate of 30fps.

Forza Motorsport 5 will be released later in 2013 alongside the Xbox One.

You know something... I would take current gen graphics with local multiplayer (4 views at the same time) any day over more online only multiplayer games at a higher res....

This is a nice feature and as a PC gamer having higher frame rates and higher resolution really does matter. However we're already moving into the 1440 to 1600P space now and much higher resolution monitors are becoming more affordable.

somatzu
somatzu

@egger7577 The other trend, besides higher resolution, is higher refresh rates. Although the common idea is that the human eye cannot detect increased motion above 60 fps, it's actually more like 90 fps. Also, at 60 fps, there is still a lot of motion blur, and if you have a good graphics card, it's probably pumping out frames faster than the average 60hz lcd monitor can display them, which means tearing, which means turning on v-sync, which means throttling performance. Lot's of gamers are getting lcd monitors with 120 and even 144hz, and my god the motion is so amazingly smooth - you just have to be able to run the game you're playing above 60fps to really get the benefits.

But yeah, tl:dr, high monitor refresh rates are dank, so hopefully Xbx1/ps4 games won't just stop at 60fps, cause that would be a shame to waste the benefits of a high monitor refresh rate.

@somatzu I dont know man, my monitor locked the refresh rate at 60hertz

somatzu
somatzu

@CraigNinten @somatzu yeah, it's probably your monitor's maximum refresh rate. you have to buy a monitor that specifically states that it has 120 or 144hz

@egger7577  Yeah 1080p is pretty much standard these days ,it's the new 720p.I'm really looking to see where we will get in 5 years.

@garysingh34 Oh much respect to the GT series, they started it all and to me TRULY started the sim genre. I still think Forza took the best of the GT elements and pushed the envelope a bit further though with customization and community elements.

Its a real shame this game is on Xbone only as I, along with the majority of gamers, will be getting PS4/sticking to PC and have to pass on this.

@garysingh34  Yup, I liked Forza, in fact I think it's much better than GT but as things stand right now I won't be buying an Xbox

PC games have been doing this for about a decade =P

Still, looks crisp. Hope for alls sake that that's gameplay too, not just everything else.

There's barely a chance in hell I'd be buying the XboxOne but this is still good news.  Not enough games made use of full HD this gen, I could probably count those that ran in 1080p on one hand.

As the guys below say though, PC's have been doing this for a while.  I'm not even a PC gamer but the fact can't be denied.. At least the consoles are taking a step forward.... gradually.

What they were saying is.."maybe" running Forza 5 @ 60fps 1080p at main menu only. Maybe.

Dannystaples14
Dannystaples14

Yeah except I still can't see any problem with current consoles actual gameplay. The only real thing that stands out on current console is the graphics aren't quite as crisp as on PC.

Never have I sat down to play Skyrim on Xbox though and though "Man if this was only playing at 60fps".

IceJester45
IceJester45

@Dannystaples14 I have. It affects the gameplay greatly.

Of course, with Skyrim, I'd be more concerned about getting the PCs mods, improved draw distances and quicker load times. Skyrim is whole different game on PC.

Dannystaples14
Dannystaples14

@IceJester45 Yeah alright mate. Most of the gaming population are fine with playing a console that has crappy controls and plays like shit.

So why did everyone not like it when Dark Souls frames dropped in Blight Town? Because it was noticeable. That is the only game that had performance issues that I've seen.

Dannystaples14
Dannystaples14

@IceJester45 Exactly and by having stupidly high standards all you are doing is making your own experience of gaming worse.

IceJester45
IceJester45

@Dannystaples14 East to explain: Console-only gamers have lower standards when it comes to performance. But, Dark Souls' Blight Town dropped below even those low standards.

And, plenty of console ports, including Skyrim, have performance issues about which people complain. Just Google "Skyrim PlayStation 3 framerate."

I personally know several people whose saved games were boned on the Xbox 360 because a character didn't spawn or a conversation didn't trigger. On the PC, that's a quick fix: just go into the console commands and bring the character to you or whatever. Better visuals are just part of the perks of playing on PC.

What's the big deal in this?... PC has been doing this for like 6 years.

demonkingx5
demonkingx5 like.author.displayName 1 Like

@GSGuy321 Fact is PC has been playing games in 1280x720 since the mid 90's now PC gamers are playing games at 1440P.

Dannystaples14
Dannystaples14

@demonkingx5 @GSGuy321 Yeah but console haven't. For them it is new.

Yes we get it PC is powerful and awesome. Yet no fucker wants to play games on them, hence why most of the gaming population is on console. Funny that.

But yeah you snigger at trivial bullshit that frankly makes not even the slightest bit of difference.

Dannystaples14
Dannystaples14

@demonkingx5 It is because since I have been getting back into gaming since the PS4 conference all I have heard is graphics this, graphics that, PCs are better because they have awesome graphics.

The fact that those same graphics totally rape a game into the ground and make it almost unplayable in the sense that "I would rather cut off one of my testicles than play this piece of shit any more", just gets glossed over.

I miss the time when games were for playing not just to look at, like most PC players suggest, since their only selling point of their system is that they have more power. Cheap games as well but no matter how cheap a crap game is I still won't buy it.

We need to get out of the graphics rut, the industry is digging itself into, and PC fans banging on about how shit consoles are because of their "out of date" graphics, are not helping.

for all of you idiots talking about 4k, it will be "4k" just like the 360/ps3 was "1080p" meaning upscaled and not true. Xbone and PS4 will be proper 1080p which is a great thing, more so the 60fps side of things. You people can finally play games without suttering all over the place

Dannystaples14
Dannystaples14

@highlanderjimd I doubt it will even be that to be honest. 1080 to 4K is a damn bit larger a difference than 720 to 1080. I recon it will be quite a noticeable decrease in quality when you stick it onto an 80" screen of something.

This will be for when 4K becomes mainstream in movies or something.

ManatuBeard
ManatuBeard

@handsome2222txhmmm NO... not only because it is confirmed that the PS4 GPU is 50% more powerful, because of this too:

Dannystaples14
Dannystaples14

@ManatuBeard @handsome2222tx 50%?!?!?! Where do you people pluck these figures from? You really think Microsoft would even attempt to compete with Sony if it was 50% more powerful?

CraigNinten
CraigNinten

@Dannystaples14 @CraigNinten @ManatuBeard @handsome2222tx Well, you've made up your own mind, its impossible for anyone to persuade you. Still, I will just throw away a few opinions here, you believein what you like.

First, benchmarking across these platforms is not possible, however, we all know wii is somewhat similar to original xbox in terms of performance - demonstrated by both gaming and running homebrew software. And its a fact that Xbox 360 is a few times more powerful than original xbox, we can safely assume the same happened to wii.

Second, like previouly stated, benchmarking is impossible, however, due to the fact that both next gen consoles are based on same architect, is safe to assume that hardware matters more because software is the same, and from what we know, PS4 is 50% more powerful hardware wise, therefore...

Dannystaples14
Dannystaples14

@CraigNinten @ManatuBeard @handsome2222tx "Wii, which was a few times weaker...", fucking hell. That has got to be the most untechnical and unscientific sentence I have ever read in my life.

Get me some benchmark stats up about both and we will talk about it being 50%.

But since there are no benchmark stats why don't you wait to see some games before slapping 50% more power onto it?

PS4 is right now, more powerful than the Xbox One. But saying it is 50% is delusional.

CraigNinten
CraigNinten

@Dannystaples14 @ManatuBeard @handsome2222tx Actually, yes. Because Nintendo had wii, which was a few times weaker than 360 and PS3, but sold more. Now you might think wii is a piece of crap that deserves no love from our gamers, but that's not the case in the eyes of MS and Sony. To put it simple: they want money, that's why they decided not to pack a i7, titan and 32G of ram into their next gen consoles, because as long as their consoles sell, the performances of these consoles actually matter little to them.

pspearman
pspearman

@ManatuBeard @handsome2222tx The ESRAM is there to simplify the process, its super quick so it allows developers to do complicated tasks quicker and cheaper.

Sure the GPU and memory are inferior to what the PS4 has, but the ESRAM is there to reduce the difference. I'm expecting there to be little or no difference between the xbox one and PS4 in cross platform games, its the exclusives where we will see both consoles strengths.

ManatuBeard
ManatuBeard like.author.displayName 1 Like

@handsome2222tx @ManatuBeard If you want a console for games ... no

X1 is a mess if you are a core gamer.

ESRAM is massive and takes lot of space, so the GPU has to be smaller.

PS4 having a much more simpler design and OS ends up being better if what you want is pure gaming.

Messenger360p
Messenger360p

Runs at 60 frames per second in native 1080p resolution.

Certainly not 4k compatible then as Xbone promotes itself, but hang on the 360 was supposed to be true HD gaming & now they want us to get excited about what we already have.

pspearman
pspearman

@Messenger360p You expect your console to play graphically intensive games at 4k resolution? Most top of the range desktop PCs these days would struggle to handle that, let alone a mid range console PC.

Xbox One and PS4 both support 4k output, but the only time you will see that is if your watching video (and happen to have a 4k telly)

Messenger360p
Messenger360p

@pspearman @Messenger360p

No, if you read my post correctly you'd understand im mocking the figures devs & MS are putting out there.

We was promised true hd gaming on the 360 & many many games fell below 720p, now its starting all over again with promises of 1080p 60fps games. Time will tell what they actually deliver....

grognard
grognard

@Messenger360p What an incredibly ignorant post.  Did MS ever say EVERY game would be 4K compatible?  Did Sony?  "True HD" is 720 and up.  You might want to start tempering your expectations now if you think every bullet point from MS and Sony means every game will have all those capabilities.

Besides 4K will be about as successful as 3D TV's were.  No one will be talking about them (or supporting them) in 3 years.

demonkingx5
demonkingx5

@grognard I don't know about that 4K is getting cheaper we don't know what will happen on the free market.

Messenger360p
Messenger360p

@grognard @Messenger360p

Wow your barking in the wrong place, if you think you know so much about business practice you better fly out to Japan & let all those manufacturers know their just wasting their time with 4K...

How ignorant are you to troll when I was clearly pointing out devs are giving us what we was supposed to get with the 360 some 8 yrs ago.

grognard
grognard

@Messenger360p All those manufacturers in Japan didn't predict very well with 3D did they?  They are not infallible.  Most consumers were raised on the concept that you buy a tv every 10 years or so.  The market has just tipped over to 50% adoption of HDTV's now.  What makes you think they're going to dump all their new purchases to get a 4K tv just to make Japanese manufacturer's more profit?
