First Dragon Age III screenshot shown

BioWare reveals first shot for upcoming role-playing game, says Frostbite engine has allowed artists to create "stunning" work.

BioWare has revealed the first, albeit blurry, screenshot for Dragon Age III: Inquisition. BioWare art and animation director Neil Thompson showed off the image during a presentation at the Bradford Animation Festival (attended by Eurogamer) last night.

"That is Dragon Age: Inquisition," Thompson said, of the image. "It's the first time anyone has seen a frame of it outside BioWare studios."

The image was taken down quickly, though one BioWare fan posted it to the BioWare forums. A higher-resolution version is expected to be released in the future.

BioWare had previously released a batch of concept art for the game.

In addition to revealing the first screenshot for Dragon Age III: Inquisition, Thompson spoke about how BioWare's use of the Frostbite engine has been beneficial to the development team.

"Mass Effect was done on Unreal of course," he said. “Dragon Age was done on the proprietary engine Eclipse. I think anyone who played Dragon Age II would agree that engine was starting to creak a little bit by the time that was released. Obviously Frostbite is the Battlefield engine built by DICE. It's a beautiful, beautiful engine. And what we've found is an improvement with [Dragon Age III] is the artists who were really battling with the Eclipse engine have just embraced Frostbite. The work they're doing now is stunning."

Dragon Age III: Inquisition was officially announced in September and is due out for unspecified platforms during late 2013 (the same time analysts believe new consoles from Microsoft and Sony will be on store shelves).

Why am I getting a sinking feeling this is going to go 1st person.

What they need is the storytelling and immersion of Origins, and the combat of DA2.  Then just rake in the money.  DA2 was CLEARLY rushed out.  Not buggy but obvious content was cut out of the game to make the deadline.

 @dussan2 I 100% guarantee you it won't be 1st person. Hell I'll even bet you $100...your move.

to be released late 2013....from the people that promise you everything you like in a role-playing game and give you nothing in return....sorry, but the toxin called me3 is still playing havoc in my veins. i will check this installment of da3 very carefully on you-tube first before deciding on anything concerning a product with ea on it!

This is bioware's last chance for me. Will have to wait and see.

I hope this frostbite engine makes this game better than what all the comments below are saying about the game...... Hopefully though, I'll be pretty busy playing GTA 5 by then.. :D

I really hope that this new game will be like DA:O. That was a great game and I felt that it truly gave me more value for my dollar.

I'm sure EA and BIoware have learnt their lesson. Instead of reusing the same dungeon over and over again, I'm sure they'll alternate between 2 dugeons, and use them over and over again. And from ME3's debacle, I'm sure they've realised that 3 colours are just not enough for the endings that virtually look the same. Expect a rainbow of colours to make them 'unique'. Finally, just every single character in the game being bisexual won't be enough anymore. You'll now be able to flirt, date, and become intimate with animals, monsters, darkspawn, dragons, and even dwarves!

Well after the sad showing that was DA:2 anything that doesn't recycle the same textures and areas 20 times and has something better then the console set up combat system (You press the attack button a lot... YOU WIN) will probably be considered an "Advancement"

So lets watch as EA pulls those strings and makes the corpse of Bioware dance.

 @Unholy123 If those strings aren't working good enough then EA will just cut them.  Because EA always respects other companies they buy right?

 @MXVIII wedge in multiplayer? Guessing you've never played BG 1 + 2? :P They took MP OUT and that was a sad day, in fact it put me off DA:O at first as ive always played them with a friend and totally enjoyed it.

 @MXVIII I got a good laugh out of this comment cuz it's so true.  Way to early to start throwing stones though.  I know you can't judge a game soley on the engine it uses but frostbite is amazing and I can't wait to see how it's utilized in a medieval setting.

As long as they don't go back to DA:O's battle mechanics and stick us with the same 6-7 maps, then I'm good with whatever Bioware gives us.

 @cdog21 Its watt made DA grate. They destroyed the franchise by changing it in the first place. It was a waste of my money and a slap in the face for all the real RPG fans. DA 2 has no tactic's and is basically a hack and slash with a lame story. And then your companions they have nearly no background story's compared to DA and you cant customize them. And don't tell about the lame outfits you can get for them. I should be able to customize everything.

They changed all the good stuff and made it easy so they can sell more games

Bioware raped DA

 @cdog21 I prefer the more tactical combat of DA:O compared to the fast-paced, "showy" and repetitive combat of DA2.

Elann2008
Elann2008

 @Drummer4Life321  @cdog21

And how was DAO's combat not repetitive?  They're basically the same at the core, but DA2's combat and animations were at least more enjoyable.  WAY more enjoyable than the extremely outdated DAO combat and animation that made me want to hit my head against the wall a hundred times over.

From a tactical side of things, I could understand what you mean.  DA2's enemies jumping from rooftops every 5 minutes were annoying as heck, but overall, the combat was a lot more enjoyable than DAO's.

What they need to NOT do is make repetitive, copy and paste environments, better writing, more interesting characters, and inspiring environments and level design.

As boasted, DA3 is suppose to be bigger than DAO and DA2 combined.  We'll see how great it turns out.  Not going to hold my breath but at least an RPG is on the horizon over all these shooters on the market.

everyday182
everyday182

 @Drummer4Life321  @cdog21 The combat for PC was the same in 2 as it was for DAO? The only diff was that in DA2 the mage actually felt powerful ( still not as good as the mages out of BG2 mind you ) DA2 was still tactical it was just faster. Unless you played the console version in which case.....serves yourself right :P hehe ( joke )

Rat_King
Rat_King

 @everyday182  @Drummer4Life321  @cdog21 Are you kidding? The combat was incredibly different in 2 compared to 1. Top down combat was like...one of the best features. Tactics were also infinitely better. Along with a more combat-efficient UI. Feel free to read my review if you need more.

yay, very likely some 1/2 assed game thats all shinny and gets bribed or some game nuts that go for that shinny above all else rate it a 9/10. Yep thats the story for the past several years and going strong. It become nothing more then a market to fill pockets when it was once to bring great entertainment.

Well, Dragon Age 2 didn't look bad, the only problem was that it had only half a dozen recycled environments. Without a minimum of variety, moving around felt more like a chore than fun exploration!

if they are cooking something in the lines of DA:O I am interested, if on the other hand they are just doing another hack&slash a la DA2 I will pass on it, and wait til Bioware comes back to its senses.

Elann2008

 @simon1812

How was it hack n slash?  The animations were better, a bit faster, and more visceral.  Over the sluggish style from DAO.  But in no way was it hack n slash.  Why?  Just because it was faster?  It wasn't Devil May Cry..

 @Evilbunz And Bethesda is notoriously slow if you're referring to the 5 years between Oblivion and Skyrim.  There were less than two years between Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 and 2 was a huge improvement that built on the original and lost nothing.
