Square Enix pres Yoichi Wada tweets that rumors of the long-delayed action role-playing game being abandoned are false.
Final Fantasy Versus XIII has not been canceled, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada said over Twitter today. A translation by Kotaku confirms the executive recently saw a build of the project during a meeting, and was very impressed by it.
"There's someone making a false rumor that Versus was cancelled. Haha…Just a minute ago, the regular Versus meeting ended," he said. "If you saw the presentation of the city, it'd knock you off your feet - lol."
Rumors that the game had been canceled were sparked last week when Kotaku cited unnamed sources saying that work on the project had quietly ended a few weeks ago. The project was absent from June's Electronic Entertainment Expo, as well as from the most recent Tokyo Game Show.
Hopefully this will bring back all the joy of playing a Final Fantasy title. And with such a long development time, we can only hope that all the game content is on disc, making us spend 50 or 60+ hours on the damned thing instead of getting special costumes or items via DLC. Final Fantasy and DLC was never a good idea.
i do not care what anybody thinks of ff13, i jus love it! ever sinz ffX" wen tidus kissed yuna n wen yuna hugd tidus at the end of the game" i jus love how ff makes me feel! i have never felt tht much love with any other game! thats what final fantasy r good at! n i feel tht way with ff13 and ff13-2, and all the ffs! i like mass effect 123,uncharted and halo bt i love ff for its romatic bits! it may not have the best gameplay bt it has the most loveable characters. it makes me feel like ive known them all my life. i love the idea of fighting for the ones u love! i mean mass effect, halo and uncharted does that too bt ff feels nostalgic! i fell tht bittersweet longing, like the feeling of being homesick.. very few games do tht. wen i finishd ffx wen i realizd tidus was jus a dream(kinda) n he jus floats away leavin eveyone behind.. i couldnt stop thinking abt tht game till ff10-2 came out. i actuly missd tidus n felt so bad for yuna.. n i do feel tht with ff13. may b bec m a girls n ff has strong girl protaganists.. or mayb bec i like lovey dovy stuff.. bt i love ff.. its makes me feel good. makes me want to do good things in life! ff u rock!! keep it up!!
May be SE is playing Apple's tactic - keeping things secret to manufacture interest and anticipation. Let's just hope the end product doesn't majorly disappoint...
Next gen is coming. Either this will be the very last game ever released for this generation of consoles, or it won't release at all.
"If you saw the presentation of the city, it'd knock you off your feet - lol."
Good, then show it to us. Put up or shut up, Mr. Wada.
I just hope versus13 brings back some of the magic and emotional storytelling from the older final fantasy games. haven't REALLY loved an ff game since ff10
Yoichi Wada is like if Bobby Kotick and EA's Origin service had a bastard child that went around snapping orphan puppies with a wet towel. The only thing he hates more than creativity is his own company's fans.
It's good to know; only because this is the only "Modern" FF title I'm interested in. Let's just hope this isn't the new Duke Nukem Forever, know what I'm sayin'?
I can't believe people actually believed that it was cancelled. First of all, Square is obviously not all together right now; did anyone else get the e-mail from them saying that KH3D was out ten days before it actually was? Secondly, leave it to Kotaku to start something without even having a source. Seriously, why do people listen to them?
@IceDefenseGod You do realise America is getting KH3D 11 days after Europe and 5 after Australia? The rest of the world already has it.
The game has just being delayed. However, i enjoyed the last one.
Now im playin Max Payne 3:
This game is really hyped, and to hear that it's not cancelled it's great... I hope it doesn't dissapoint
Awesome news, they should probably change the name of it though as some people (as shown in some of the comments below) might think it is in any way related to FFXIII and not buy it because of that. It's a completely different game.
@gamebreakerz__ The name is fine and FF XIII and XIII-2 were great. Even if for some have been a bit of a disappointment. Also there has been so much waiting for this new title that it will sell like bread. As soon as there will be the announcement the hype will raise sky high.
@gamebreakerz__ There is a connection. However massive of one, I'm not sure, but if you saw the trailer, they mentioned Etro, which is a very key component of FFXIII-2.
@IceDefenseGod The only connection between any of the XIII games (excluding sequels) is the mythology and lore. Characters, storys, settings (I've heard they're years apart, hundreds) are all different, however they're all set in the same universe, which gives them quite a large, and yet almost insignificant connection. Actually I haven't played any of them so I don't know if the connection is insignificant, but yeah
@IceDefenseGod They mention Crystals and Ifrit in several FF's as well... Each one generally has nothing to do with the last.
@JimmeyBurrows The difference is, that Ifrit and crystals are FF staples....so they are all but guaranteed. Etro (and I may be wrong about this) is specifically in the ff 13 universe. The only thing I can say is, just because we have seen a few videos of the game and have yet to see anything that substantially ties the two worlds together means absolutely nothing. It could be subtle connections or perhaps a huge story point that they do not want to spoil till you play it.
@Tetsuyawl Take 10 dollars and put it in an interest accruing account, by the time the game comes out you will be able to afford it 10 times over :P
@einrazer considering the game is probably going to be 60 bucks, and at today's current interest rates, even on high interest CD's you'd be lucky to make a couple percent a year. lets says 10% to be outrageous. that means you make a whole $1 each year. after 10 years you would have $20 and now you are making 2 interest per year. 10 more years, 40 bucks, 4 interest. 5 more years after that you got yourself 60 bucks. So 25 years to make your 10 turn into 60. Thats hardly the 10x amount the game would cost. You'd need a TON of time to make 10 turn into 600. And after that much time, due to inflation, your 600 wouldn't be worth much either. But thanks for trying, einrazen.
tl;dr : Even at almost double normal interest, it would take you nearly 25 years to make your 10 bucks turn into 60.
@rice2555 wouldn't quite work like that. So you get 10% interest annually, $1, adding up to $11. The next year, assuming the interest rates haven't changed (not sure if they do for something like this), you'd get 10% of 11, $1.10, adding up to $12.10. after 10 years you'd have $25.93, almost $6 more than what you said
I wouldn't be surprise if they wait till ps4 to bring this game out since it basically at the end of the ps3 life cycle
I dont have a lot of faith in SE at this point.. especially after the FFXIV debacle. I could not even finish XIII. Square needs a new creative director.. use all those resources and start an action RPG franchise.. that is both skill and loot based and make an awesome story out of it like they use to do. Or keep the FF franchise for kids under the age of 16 and start a new franchise catering to 17+ year olds.
It will be the "Chinese Democracy" of video games. For years people will wonder if it will ever come out. Finally, when it looks like it never will, it will come out without anyone expecting it. Then, after people have played it, they will be like "Well.....that was ok....I guess."
