The official review embargo for FIFA 09 has now passed, and the game is due out tomorrow in Europe. We're working to get the review done as soon as possible, and it should be up at the beginning of next week. We've had the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions since last Friday and have played through the single-player modes--however we can't test the online multiplayer aspect of the game thoroughly until the public get a hold of it. The big new feature for this year's game is the 10-v-10 online, and although we've tried to get EA to help set this up ahead of the release, the logistical challenge of doing this has ultimately been too much.

As well as the aforementioned 10-v-10 online mode, this year's game has the Adidas Live Season, whereby player stats are updated according to real-world performance on a week-by-week basis. You can also create custom team tactics and upload them to share online, in addition to taking videos and photos as you could in FIFA 08 and Euro 2008. We've also been playing through the Be a Pro: Seasons mode, where you play as a single player in your favourite team and then see out through four consecutive seasons with them. All in all, there's a lot of new content in FIFA 09, and it's all wrapped up with the consummate style that we've come to expect from EA Sports. We've taken some videos from the game, which you can find below, and our review should be up on the site early next week.

Fifa 09 is fantastic. If you like soccer simulations, it doesn't get much better. PES what?

I've only tried to demo versions of both FIFA and PES this year, but I have to say that PES animations feel more fluid and coherent than FIFA:s so far. And that's all I have right now :P

It is funny people trying to compare this to PES. PES09 is not good, it is a rip off. It is nothing like real football anymore. The Fifa vs PES debate is dead move on..... Now that said the game across europe is getting excellent reviews and has a metascore of 9/10. With your review i hope you are sombody who knows football and knows more importantly how the real thing is played. You ask majority of football fans and football video game fans they will tell you it is the best football game they have played. The only people complaining are those who are biased towards PES or people who have not actually played the game. To say it is robotic or the AI is easy is laughable as it clearly shows you haven't played it as the AI is very very good and the game is very hard.

The graphics are really good and the gameplay has made a huge step, but it's still way behind PES imo. It just feels so slow, i can stand that FIFA feeling.

Ive played the demo and im pretty impressed with the game. I think it feels realistic and is also much more responsive then Fifa 08. The only thing i dont like is it seems like you cant play a fast paced flowing game of football as the emphasis seems to be on slow build up. Saying that, the game is pretty good. Ive also played the PES 09 demo, again i was impressed but theres concerns about the goalie AI as they seem to spill the ball very easilly. Maybe they will workon this before final release, or there will be an update on Xbox live.

you guys that are criticizing FIFA09 for being "robotic" and "just names change" should REALLY at least TRY the game. Seriously. And if you have played it, then wtf are you talking about?

Hopefully this game isn't broken like Madden 09. EA's credibility is pretty low right now.

i hope they have that over-the-shoulder cam like they had in the demo in be a pro mode. that would be sick

I hate EA, but I must admit I always loved the FIFA games. They did a great leap with 08, and I love the fact they're gradually perfecting the game, making it as realistic as possible, after playing the FIFA 09 demo. I just want one thing: Be A Pro with a GOALKEEPER!!!

It's controversial to see Fifa as the "underdog" within the football genre now, for the past few years its been PES and now the situation's changed.. And even more ironically Fifa seems to be giving a way better performance this year (such as PES has done in the past), but will not be bought as much as it deserves as people don't trust the name anymore. Nothing has changed but names apparently..
