Far Cry 3 sells 850,000 in December, says analyst

Cowen & Company industry watcher estimates US sales for Ubisoft's action-shooter, predicts overall industry sales slide 21 percent.
In a note to investors today, Cowen & Company analyst Doug Creutz estimated United States sales for Far Cry 3 in December totaled 850,000 units. Creutz pointed out that as is normal for the month of December, Far Cry 3 was the only major release for the month.
Creutz also today offered a prediction for the NPD Group's December industry sales report, which will be released tomorrow. He expects overall sales to slide, with software sales diving 20 percent year-on-year and total packaged game sales dipping 21 percent.
Creutz said he expects the most precipitous year-over-year drop to come in the retail PC games category, which he said will fall 51 percent.
Though the present may look bleak, the future is bright, Creutz said. A rebound is expected over the next 12 months due to the expected launch of new consoles from Microsoft and Sony during the second half of the year.

Should I buy this game? I am currently addicted to Halo 4 and BF3 ( go ahead and hate, to all the negative losers ). It's looking good to me and the story is intriguing.

@Hitman_SAmExactly what first-person shooters have you actually enjoyed then, if not FC3? I'm no fanboy, disliked the 2nd and thought the first was okay, but my god ---> exactly what standards do you hold it to? Awesome characters, above-par (sometimes incredible) voice work, tons of cool weapons great graphics and sound effects with so many ways to approach objectives (with a ton more variety in general than 99% of games out today)....My only gripe was that the 2nd island should have been less green, to give it a more fresh feel.

ME3 is still better. 1.3 mill in the first month. A month that dosen't have a huge holiday where little kids beg for the game they want. Number's don't lie.
I have FC3 still unwrapped waiting for me. I am making my way through XCOM right now. From what I hear and read it deserves more sales, and with it being the only major Dec. release it is kind of puzzling. Maybe since the second was a let down after the first people were reluctant. Maybe the devs are satisfied so far which is really the only thing that matters in terms of sales.
It was great until I encounter a nasty bug in the game that prevents me from completing the side mission "a connection to the past." I collected the three tablets and for some reason the mission wouldn't update for me to complete it. I restarted the damn thing, and now the three tablets won't respawn.
Does anyone know if Ubi Soft is going to release a patch for consoles that's going to fix the games glitches and lobby issues?
@Lamachina I agree it was a weak year overall. All I kept hearing is how great it was and that it was one of the best years in recent memory for games. I say compared to the last few years it was not even close.
1 Like The game was absolutely awesome until the second half. Then the storyline becomes so botched and the endings are so bad that it was almost insulting and ended up souring the whole experience. Coupled with the absence of any challenge once the outposts were gone, I couldn't find any reason to get back to it. Great game, botched second half and not enough of Vaas.
@Fandango_Letho Agreed. First half of the game was completely awesome, and then BAM. My character becomes this extremely annoying stereotypical Jake Sully guy who dances with wolves and Pocahontas in fern gully with the last samurai. And my favorite character is no longer around to save the plot from seeming as contrived and generic as it actually is.
This game is so amazing i can't even count all the animals i found in the game, And that's not all it has so much potential THIS GAME DESERVES MOAR!

Finally a large scale map/game that is worth a damn. Meaning that it isn't so small of a story line that it needs DLC immediately after release.
...So...gamers are that hard up for entertainment that they bought this, that's what I am to take away from this...? They must not know about cut-rate mediocre crossword puzzle games...

Far Cry 3 is an amazing game, but I regret buying it for 360 when my PC could probably run it pretty well.
The console version is very, very poorly optimized, it's like they decided making the grass render as far away as possible was more important than getting it up to 30 fps. After a little while I adapted to it and didn't notice the choppiness of it as much, but there's a huge difference when you switch back to a game like Battlefield that runs at a solid 30 fps.
Very good game indeed, so hopefully as the word spreads out about the games excellent characteristic the sales should be good in the following months. I myself am not a fan of FPS specially with practically all of them copying from CoD and delivering very linear, scripted experiences with abused use of QTE's. That's not the case here.

@Wensea10 Agreed Wensea. Ubisoft should be financially rewarded for putting out one of the best of the year. Hopefully the reviews get the message out to more folks so they pick up the game. They'll be glad they did.

@Wensea10 Still, pretty impressive for one month of sales, especially during the holiday season. Great game.
I'm playing through it now. I think its a good game. Not sure on greatness yet. Being able to improvise missions and transportation is the best part though.
Great gameplay, but my one complaint is just that the graphics are pretty bland. They could have made a tropical island look a lot more impressive, and fun to just explore.
9 Like Good numbers, but not great. I do hope a Far Cry 4 comes to the next gen. I love tge series. FC3 was the best shooter of 2012.
I'm not into FPS but I will definitely pick this one up and give it a shot when the price drops.
