Fallout: New Vegas drops fall 2010, first trailer debuts

[UPDATE] Bethesda confirms Obsidian-developed installment in postnuclear RPG series will arrive later this year for PS3, 360, and PC; teaser trailer for game inside.

[UPDATE] Today, Bethesda Softworks announced that Fallout: New Vegas will arrive in fall 2010 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. The Maryland-based publisher released few details about the game, other than to say that it aims to have the same sort of dark humor as the first two Fallout games. As mentioned in the original story about the announcement (see below), many developers of Fallout and Fallout 2 are working on New Vegas in their new positions at independent studio Obsidian Entertainment.

Bethesda did release a trailer (above) that reveals some details about the game. Very similar in structure to the first Fallout 3 teaser trailer, it begins with Frank Sinatra's big-band rendition of "Blue Moon" piping over a speaker. The speaker, as it turns out, is attached to a lonely, single-wheeled robot that resembles Borderlands mascot Claptrap. Instead of a lens, though, the robot has a television screen showing a gaunt, smiling cowboy.

As in the first Fallout 3 trailer, the camera pulls back to show a longer shot--in this case, the robot sifting through a desert graveyard. A spiky tower similar to Las Vegas' Stratosphere casino can be seen in the background, fully lit up. Indeed, as the camera cranes up, it shows a whole metropolis glowing with thousands of electric lights, much like Las Vegas does today--indicating that Sin City escaped the nuclear onslaught that leveled much of the world in Fallout's timeline.

Finally, the camera dollies back to reveal a lone soldier in a duster coat and a helmet with the number "7" on it. The soldier is also holding a California state flag, a likely reference to the New California Republic, a confederation of city-states featured in Fallout 2. The NCR was a significant military presence in the game, and players could join its forces as an NCR Ranger, a lawman dedicated to eradicating slavery. One possibility is that the figure pictured is one such ranger.

The trailer ends with actor Ron Perlman delivering the Fallout series' iconic tagline in voice-over: "War. War never changes." The original article on the teasing of Fallout: New Vegas' announcement today is below. [END UPDATE]

The past few months have seen the Fallout franchise making headlines for being the subject of an increasingly acrimonious legal dispute. That will apparently change on Thursday, as Bethesda Softworks' official Twitter feed is urging fans to "Keep your eyes peeled for new stuff on #FalloutNewVegas tomorrow."

Tomorrow's revelations will be the first new information on Fallout: New Vegas since it was announced last April for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Due out this year, the postapocalyptic role-playing game will not be a direct sequel to the critical and commercial hit Fallout 3, which was set in the ruins of Washington DC. Instead, it will be set in Las Vegas, which was apparently spared the nuclear holocaust that preceded the original 1997 Fallout, set in Northern California. That game was a semi-sequel to the 1988 RPG Wasteland, which was partially set in Las Vegas.

Fallout: New Vegas will also see the license return to some of the developers that helped craft the first two Fallout games at Interplay. Using the Fallout 3 engine, it is being developed by RPG specialty studio Obsidian Entertainment, founded in 2003 by Feargus Urquhart and others from Interplay's now-shuttered Black Isle Studios. Obsidian's other projects include Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, Neverwinter Nights 2 (and several expansions), the stillborn Aliens RPG, and the upcoming Alpha Protocol.

Ironically, Urquhart expressed skepticism when Bethesda licensed the rights to make Fallout games from a cash-strapped Interplay in 2004. Bethesda went on to buy the Fallout IP outright in 2007, leaving Interplay with only the rights to develop a massively multiplayer game based on the series.

Since then, the two companies' relationship has soured over Interplay's marketing of the first three Fallout games as the "Fallout Trilogy" and over Bethesda's claims that the Fallout MMORPG is not being developed as fast as agreed upon. In turn, Interplay has accused Bethesda of trying to seize the last sliver of the Fallout IP so it can develop its own game at its nascent MMORPG division. Like most inter-company disputes, the matter is now before a judge, who most recently ruled in Interplay's favor.

Bringing the original Fallout developer on-board was a great idea, and the little improvements they're making really stand out. Plus, the New California Rangers are just bad-ass.

Bethesda did a great job of converting the genre into Fallout3. I have no doubt that Fallout New Vegas will be wonderful as well. I definitely like the fact they are bringing on board some of the old devs from Black Isle. Since it will be Obsidian and not Bethesda it makes me wonder what production qualities will differ. I am worried about Interplay's bid for an MMO. Unless they put someone like Bioware on the project I definitely worry about the qualit of the MMO.

this game is going to be sweet. fallout 3 is my favorite game of all time and i dont expect this to dissapoint... however, on my ps3 version of the game of the year edition, i had trouble with glitching and freezing up alot and the graphics werent anything special i hope they make it less glitchy

OH NO'S! Darn you Obsidian for this game. Hundreds of hours to be played, days of school to be missed, and sick days called into work more than normal. I wouldn't have it any other way. This is going to thrash bass!

if nuked only the east coast would be really effected(population count is where the nukes will be going). Though in reality vegas wouldn't have an abundant water source in the future naturally anyway. Survival in vegas wouldn't be tolerable.

Vegas would be a target on any country's list to nuke, just like NYC,D.C., L.A.,etc. Following the theme that most of the corporations, and business in the Fallout series follow they're corrupt and the U.S government too! Then what's keeping casinos owners from bribing foreign generals not to launch ICBMs at Vegas. Nothing!! 1950's-1960's era Las Vegas casinos were run by the mob,and they had a lot of cash!

what the game needs is more settlements,a bigger skybox (in other words: bigger wasteland), more houses,a personal robots that we can ''Programme'', more quests, more places, less bugs, less DLC's (expansion packs) more stuff in the main quest, also they should add settings that if we shoot in the head, the victim will die automatically, more weapons and..... more and random speeches from the character( like he could say buy in the middle of the conversation and other times he could continue his conversation).

@solidsnake435 Vegas probably wasnt leveled because its in the middle of jackf**k nowhere and @ cerealkillerx the hoover dam is a huge hydro electric power station so power isn't a problem.

Think about it... with all that open space, we might have casinos as entire levels, or have some really epic enemies that youll see coming from far away. Personaly, I look forward to going to Hoover Dam and killing some supermutant slavers...

Maybe the reason why Vegas didn't get leveled is because the bomb didn't go off? kinda like Megaton in fallout 3. there will probably be vaults that you can go to. Most like a fairly large open world centered around vegas. I hope there will be V.A.T.S, also less bugs than fallout 3.
I enjoyed fallout 3 a bunch just wished there was more missions! Make the level cap higher than 20 from launch! Loved the perks, please have some of ones from fallout 3,2,etc. Perks like Mysterious stranger were pure awesome. p.s I hope there's the Fatman, also with more mini nukes! 8)

there is going to be a hardcore mode available in new vegas that makes stimpaks heal over time, enemies are going to be more strategic as oppose to using just plain simple combat and you are going to have to keep rehydrating yourself by drinking water or else you will die. also unique weapons have a different skin colour. i just hope they change the combat. for more information visit the vault wiki. so far like the changes. waiting for 2010's game of the year!

I cant wait for this game to come out!!
I played Fallout 3 and it was amazing!
But despite that i wish they would add vehicles to this game, and a bigger variety of weapons.

I have high hopes for this game because of the collaberation from these awesome software developers.

Im betting they will include the following features:
    1.) Gambling, it is vegas
2.) Driveable vehicles, because of the vast desert space
3.) Since Vegas seems to start off all bright and shiny, maybe an economy system would dictate the condition of vegas also affected by your decisions.
4.) I bet the Hoover damn plays a HUGE role...maybe
5.) You can say goodbye to V.A.T.S.

Fallout 3 did contain tons of drugs, sex, and prostitution which could only naturaly migrate to the next game, but maybe in darker detail.

No. It wont work. Bethesda does not understant. I do not belame them, they are not Black Isle. But they should listen. The key element of fallout is that it does not place the player in the center. The atmosphere of the game should be placed in the center of the game. Let the player chose his/her location in the game. IF YOU PLACE THE PLAYER IN THE CENTER, YOU MAKE FALLOUT JUST BLOWOUT.

I recently bought the game and ahvn't begun with the first DLC yet. But if New Vegas is gonna be at least this good i'm a buyer. I Can't stop wandering around and exploring, so it kinda takes ages for me to complete a quest. =) But seriosly Bathesda. Just fix the terrain skating thing unless you intend to create skates for footwear please...

Like in the Fallout 3 Trailer: we saw a devastated DC.
We were saying to are selves that they have to have enemies in DC.But in this game I'm not sure.

I'm really wondering what character we will be playing. The quy at the end of the trailer...or a vault dweller. But if there is a new Vegas. What or who will be the enemies. Maybe at the outskirts of the city but not in the city.....One things is certain.... There is a lot of questions with no answers.

    qywterahsgdf out...

  • cerealkillerX

    Posted Feb 11, 2010 1:15 pm GMT

    @bowdes

That is an excellent question... perhaps the radioactive fallout claimed the citizens, but not the city? rediscovered later, it would be concidered a new settlement, and seeing the signs all the the place that says las vegas, an obvious name for a settlement... or if you can even call it a settlement... would be New Vegas... just my guess

I most certainly will not buy a turn based game. This is the 21st Century people, turn-based is a waste of time.

it would seem more possible that since vegas lies in a desert, it would be screened by the sheer distance to nearby cities, or perhaps its just random chance. the nukes were fired pretty randomly, perhaps vegas just was so lucky no get smacked in the face!

I won't buy this on release date. Despite being released months later, the FO3 GOTY version still had a good deal of bugs. I'd bet big $$$ this one will too! If I get this game it will be when it is released with all the dlc. Save some money and some headaches. First is not always best. Also I wish they would make it so you can really be bad. In FO3 you could play a bad character but the story really never changed. In the end you still did the same things. To make it where you can really play a good, neutral, or bad character calls for true multiple store lines not just a few different selections. Unfortunately with $$$ driving much of the decisions in the gaming industry I don't see that happening.
