Obsidian CEO says idea for new game is "within the top three pitches we've ever come up with"; would be set between Episode III and Episode IV.
Fallout: New Vegas developer Obsidian Entertainment has its sights set on a galaxy far, far away. Speaking to Rock Paper Shotgun, CEO Feargus Urquhart said the studio has pitched LucasArts on a new Star Wars role-playing game.
"I would say it's within the top three pitches we've ever come up with," he said.
The game would be set between the events of the films Episode III and Episode IV. "We think that timeframe is super interesting. It's the fall of the Republic, the extermination of the Jedi; it's Obi-Wan going off and making sure Luke is OK. You have the Sith, but you have the extermination of all Force users except for very, very few," he said.
Urquhart said he pitched LucasArts on the idea prior to Disney's acquisition of the Star Wars brand in October. He noted that the transition "changes things," but that won't keep Obsidian from pushing the game with new owner Disney.
He said when Obsidian pitched the game to LucasArts, the studio received a positive call back later that very day. Since Disney's takeover of Star Wars, though, Obsidian has yet to speak with the House of Mouse about getting the project off the ground.
"We haven't [talked with Disney yet]. We're kind of waiting for the smoke to clear," he said. "But that's one of my next big things to do. To kind of go over there and [get the ball rolling again]."
If Disney does greenlight Obsidian's new Star Wars RPG, it will not be the first time the two companies have worked together. Obsidian spent a year making a Snow White prequel called Dwarves before changes at Disney led to the game's cancellation.
Obsidian is no stranger to the Star Wars brand. The studio developed the 2004 role-playing game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II--The Sith Lords, taking over the reins from original developer BioWare. The developer is currently working on South Park: The Stick of Truth and Project Eternity.
If this gets made in the era they are pitching the idea for, I will never buy another ObSHITian game agin.
PS OH, I forgot to mention the horribleness of the 2 unleashed games how they pranced on the graves of the 2 trilogies by adding their take on the timeline in betweens. Rather dull in my opinion.
Oh please not another game set between episode 3 and 4, there are other timelines for chr***sakes, plus their more interesting and not played out.
The number of people who read the headline and NOTHING ELSE and then commented is ridiculous... lol. I'm really looking forward to this as I've been dying for a Skyrim-esque Star Wars experience.
Holla! I loved KOTOR 2. I was convinced that the likelihood of another KOTOR-style Star Wars RPG had been reduced to virtually nothing by the huge investment that was put i to making SWTOR happen. This is great news for fans of KOTOR I & II who aren't into MMOs, like myself. Like a lot of people, I'd like to see a new series set after the movies altogether, instead of trying to mine the space between the original and trilogy prequels. I feel like The Force Unleashed games have already milked that time frame quite a bit. At any rate, I'm psyched to find out how this situation develops!
@jewell21 KOTOR 3? Keep dreaming
I'm game for more OldRepublic or a new timeline. The two trilogies are kind of played out and the fans seem to hate changes in the timeline of the two trilogies. There's also some merit to a New Republic 1000 years into the future
Oh my god yes please! i need a good star wars game, playing battlefront 2 all the time is kind of monotonous. if disney doesnt allow this im going to be really mad
They havnt talked to Disney yet? dosnt Disney only own the rights for the movies? where as the games are still Lucasarts?
Please make it be offline and available to all formats not exclusive to PC or Xbox if it's good I'll buy it
I have been waiting for a Star Wars RPG, well all my gaming life. I never played KOTOR because I kind of missed out on the years it came out. I also never had an Xbox of any kind.(It is only for Xbox right?) So yeah, this would be very nice.
@tightwad34 ffs you never played any kotor and still you are crying for star wars rpg??fucking idiot lol
@Barrakas21 What the hell? Jumping the gun a bit there. Did you ever stop to think maybe I never owned a system KOTOR was made for? I also wasn't gaming much when they were in their hayday. Maybe think a bit before you call people fucking idiots. I won't call you anything because I know nothing about you.
@Purplekjw That's awfully nice of you. I don't have a system I can play them on, and I don't care to do it on the PC. Graphics aren't a big deal to me, so that wouldn't be an issue. Thanks for the offer.
Definitely worth checking out, even now. They play so well, and the graphics aren't really retro, they're just not high def.
I'd freakin' GIVE you my copies of KOTOR I and II if I knew who the heck you were. You must play them. :p
Kotor was released for PC with an added location, so was Kotor 2.
@moncealyo KOTOR stands for Knights of the OLD REPUBLIC. The story of KOTOR takes place 4000 years BEFORE little snotty Darth Vader was even born.
"Between episode 3 and 4"
"3 and 4"
Just to clear things up for you since you're confused.
Collaboration with Disney? Is a Star Wars RPG suppose to be some new edge or something? Wasn't that pretty much TOR, KOTOR, Dark Forces, Force Unleashed, Galaxies... Need I go on?
@solidus2_1 No, I don't think Jedi Academy is a RPG. It's a third person action adventure game just like Jedi Outcast or Force Unleashed. And neither is Dark Forces or even Galaxies.
People keep asking for Kotor 3, it's never going to happen. The kotor storyline is over, read the Revan novel by Drew Karpyshyn it's canon and ties up all the loose ends after Kotor 2 and links the storyline with TOR.
Making an RPG with choices that contradicts preset canon isn't going to happen, and especially since everyone knows what's going to happen, the Exile from Kotor 2 dies ( the canon is having the exile a female), Revan gets imprisoned by the Sith Emperor for 300 years, then TOR happens.
@MAD_AI it all doesnt matter we know the sith lose and theres 1000 years of peace before episode 1. and then Obsidians plot is pointless because its luke who defeats the empire and restores the jedi order. Personaly I'd perfer Knights of the New Republic something that takes place like 100 hundred years after Return of the jedi
Its enough info to make me excited......Star Wars RPG, im in forsure. Probably gonna be on next gen tho. If it gets confirmed im looking forward to it
@ObxChillin There is no way at this point it wont be a next gen game next gen. PS4 and the Next Xbox will be out by the end of the year just before Christmas. It takes more then 2 years to develop a good game
Hmmm. There isn't enough information to make me excited, but we'll see. KoTOR II was enjoyable, but very unfinished. The lightsaber forms and weapons and armor upgrading was much better than the KoTOR, but the first game's story is a masterpiece and the game itself is my vote for greatest RPG of all time (one of them at least). I say either keep the same mechanics from KoTOR II or go in the direction of the Jedi Knight series, but no over the top Starkiller (same era basically) god force powers ha ha. It would be interesting to see the transition of the clone trooper army into the storm trooper army or the fall of key planets to the empire.
KOTOR 1 was the first time I cared about an RPG and when I found out Mass Effect 2 was made by the same people and headed for PS3 I jumped at a chance to play it.
Hmm to be honest the only rpg's I ever played and liked was KOTOR 1, 2, & ME 2.
i love obsidian style of game with fallout and skyrim, why can't they come up with a pirate theme game it would kick ass
@ginop73 they didn't make skyrim
Why this? Why not KOTOR III?! As others have stated in the comments before me, there are already enough TV series, comic books, novels and games set in the same SW era as the movies... yet both of the Knights of the Old Republic games topped most of that because they were so unique. It was a completely different time period, the atmosphere was original and amazing, and it all felt like Star Wars - but soooo different from the movies.
Because LucasArts cancelled Kotor 3 which was being developed by Bioware back in 2008 or so. Then Drew Karpyshyn finished the storyline with the Revan novel, and now we have TOR to continue the storyline.
@Bamul Yea I loved KOTOR... but the prospect of a open world RPG as someone in the star wars universe is intriguing. But only If I can build and maintain my own ship if I choose to be a scoundrel.
