Epic Games stands against SOPA

@QOSMSTR This is the problem: no one should be told they cant create videos just because some one finds them stupid, or not entertaining. You might care less about youtube, but that doesn't justify censoring it. If you dont like em, dont watch em, right? But creating a system where its illegal to make them in the first place? Thats just horrible.

@RavageCobra Well if it stalls piracy and doesnt allow user created youtube videos thats fine by me. I could care less about vids other than the publishers/developers OFFICIAL gameplay anyway and the world would be a better place without more stupid CoD vids. And since when does taking out CoD vids ruin its reputation? I keep thinking these weird thought about how the game's reputation is either good or bad because of deveopment, and not about youtube videos. And you can still create in game videos from the theater anyways. And do you even know what the MPAA is? Key words in there: MOTION PICTURES. aka: Movies. @QOSMSTR Did you even read the bill? It doesn't allow gameplay videos to be uploaded to YouTube, unless the gameplay was uploaded by the developer/publisher. That means no Minecraft vids, no Halo maps, no "ZUP3R AW3S0M3 THR0W1NG KN1F3 K1LZ FR0M K0D!!!!!1!!1111!!!!!!!eleven!!!1!11!" No gameplay whatsoever. It's trying to kill free spech. Figures idiots like EA would get behind it. They only want to kill CoD's reputation. The NFL and NPAA aren't even a member of the ESA, what the hell say do they have in this? This whole thing should be thrown out, it's a waste of time, waste of breath. I've said my word.

SOPA really isn't about piracy. It's not even about protecting free speech, it's about suppressing free speech. Do you know how often law enforcement asks Youtube to take videos of police brutality or other such videos off their site? 100's of times a year. When will ppl wake up and see that if a politician says they are going to do something, you can assume they will do the opposite.

Why wouldn't they want this? I understand free speech, but since when does stealing things classify as that?

disagree totally. piracy exists because 1. people are poor an 2. too much money for entertainment that just doesn't cover a policy of if it's real bad you get stuck with it. Example. Guns & Roses the Use your Illusion albums---GREAT ----- The Spaghetti Incident -----Terrible. lost 15 bucks to that one an still didn't get a refund. Bottom line. most games an movies an music suck. if people like a product they buy it. @cephas90 Again, if you can see the "pattern" in one example, I can't understand why you can't lift the veil to apply the same pattern to other examples. They like to put the label of "conspiracy" and "theory" on such things, in order to facilitate it for emotionally blind and gullible people to paradoxically feel too smart to "believe"...and believe what? Believe what essentially and practically is the truth. Read "The Shock Doctrine" and watch its documentary and see for yourself if one example has anything to do with theory or conspiracies, or is actually a set of accurate, documented historical records and testimonies.

This problem has gotten so out of proportion that, very unfortunately, we're sad and heartbroken to say, we are forced to take away some of your liberties, eventually take away your freedom, but hey, look at the bright side: it's for your own protection, kids. If you believe in ONE of those scenarios, or believe in its truth, then you must ask yourself why aren't you believing in the others: piracy -> SOPA and whatever kills creativity & indie studios for the sake of corporations, global warming -> carbon tax (more taxes don't need explanation), terrorism -> police-state legislation & policies, Wikileaks & riots -> internet censorship. In each case, the cause or "excuse" is either 90% hoax + 10% or negligible existence but inflated and facilitated to deliberately become bigger.

why don't they just balance this out. You get caught down loading a movie, bang! You get a fine... just like you do when you fail to come to a complete stop! bang! $124. fine! Its that simple... these guys want to make it sound like its the end of the world when you can buy a movie at wal-mart for $14.96 at release. If a shop lifter is caught stealing a movie, he gets a fine, and banned from the store. Sopa wants to take it too far... just balance it... simple as that.. "here you've infringed on so and so's copyright, bang $250. fine!" what is so hard about that? @yasso I'm sorry, but our opinions are such that there really isn't any common ground for us to meet at. You say there aren't terrorists, that they are a concoction of government (I am not for more government) and that 9/11 was a hoax. There's nothing I can say to refute that in a manner that would be acceptable to you, or at least that's my opinion. I agree that corrupt politicians and hidden agendas are real issues... but I also believe that terrorism is a real issue that I'd rather not have happen and THEN have us react accordingly. I prefer proactive solutions, and if that affects a few of my rights, fine, I'll take that over another bombing.

One really must be brainless to believe that 9/11 was done by a plane, rather than by planned demolition that took weeks to prepare. The only real terrorists are in our governments, dude. I wish that almost universally hated laws could be struck down via angry mob. We need a return to the monarchy. If the people in charge screw around too much, off with their heads, and sit someone better on the throne. Nowadays, getting attacked by a lynch mob isn't really a real fear for the leaders (in the west), so they do whatever they want. If what they wanted would result in their deaths, they'd think about the people first.

I just think devs rely too much on dlc and patches that they can launch a game half finished and just say "Oh well, that is what dlc will fix". dlc is bad for consumers because we get a sub par game and the rest of the game we have to pay 15$+ for to get the whole experience. BS if you ask me but whatever.

@Xeogua, That's the exact mentality that bothers me. The mentality being, "If me, poor ol' me, just watched this NFL game free of charge on the internet since it's not aired on my local market NFL affliate, it doesn't affect the NFL, they make enough money". I ask this, what if everyone thought that, and now a majority of fans stopped paying to go to games, or paying for NFL TV packages, etc? Would the NFL be profitable? Hell no. The point is there is a cause and effect to the collapes of all great businesses. The point is to prevent the loss of income, it's not to gain more income.

I'd like to see SOPA revised heavily. I love the idea. Institute legislature that allows owners of intellectual property to prevent the free sharing of it. That isn't hindering free speech, that's hindering stealing. Let's be honest, this is mainly directed at the sites or entities that out-right pirate and sell or distribute something with no consent of the owners. On top of that, they distribute it free or if they charge a fee, the original owners of the property are not paid their loyalties. People that support this type of service (pirating movies, games, etc), it hurts the masses, including themselves. Movies aren't made for free, nor are games, the fewer people buy them, the less investors will invest in them, the crappier movies become, the crappier games become. In some form, we need SOPA to just get rid of these services/entities that ultimately cost the companies money. If I owned a company that had intellectual property that could be stolen and spread to the masses for free, then I'd be asking for some protection from somewhere. All that said, the current SOPA bill is just too drastic, and not a lot of common sense. Just give companies the authority to involve the government's assistance to fine the people pirating. If they have a site entirely devoted to facilitate pirating, then it would be at grounds to be shut down.

@CWSoccer07 I didn't know that, but doesn't the NFL make enough any way to not have to worry about people watching the game online. Some people don't like crowds and would much rather watch it from the comfort of their home, and unless they have it on PPV, then they've closed off a group of people from enjoying the game.

SOPA = end of the internet. Look at it this way, if you were on top of the pyramid running things, would you want the average lemming be able to have access to the information that would make them better informed as to what you are trying to do? SOPA is dangerous as the media is getting angry that they ar no longer in control so of course they are going to want it regulated. That way you keep people in the dark again by only giving them a few sources of media all controlled by the same interests under the ruse of protecting copy written information. SOPA is just a RUSE for more control. that's all it is. they are mad that we have limitless information at our fingertips and it gets harder for them to push their agenda b/c of it. That is all.

Imagine if u have to do a research paper for your class. When you type in your assignment on Google you will not get over 1,000 websites about your assignment but only 1 or 5 websites that have went out and done the raw finding on their own and not by someone who has read the research and put it into a easier format for you to understand. So basically you would have to hit the library like old times :) and read and read and read just so u can write 1 page lol have fun with that. If u support CBS and NFL then you support SOPA. Social media is our most powerful tool that unites us second from our strength in numbers of fed up people...

@sorcererxx12 The idea is to stop overseas piracy by preventing Americans from accessing their websites. Ideally, if this actually worked (it won't due to a technical firewall being designed by the same people who probably believed in the "Y2K Bug"), it would put foreign IP distributors out of "business" by making it impossible for them to gain money or for people to access their website in the U.S. Other countries could still access them and no legal action would be needed against the actual "rogue site" (whatever that means). We'd just censor ourselves against the bad people. And then Lowes will sign a petition banning the mention of the Muslim religion without the term "extremist" built in and we can all be a nice, happy New North Korea. I'm exaggerating, but considering this sort of censorship is already being pushed for, do we really want a precedent of the government legally deciding which sites we're allowed to visit based purely off an industry accusing someone of piracy, regardless of the, you know, proof? Or do we care about proof any more?

Good for Epic, and shame on the ESA and a bunch of those other p***y companies. SOPA is nothing more than government tyranny and I can't believe that more people aren't outraged about it. It sucks because it affects even those of us who don't live in the U.S., but there is very little that we can do about it. If you live in the U.S. I think you owe it to yourself to sign petitions and write your officials and do whatever else you can to try and stop this horrible bill that will do nothing to stop piracy and will succeed only in infringing on your rights.

I just read somewhere that in Sweden they made the "right to copy and paste any sort of material" an actual religion where control+C, control+V are considered religious mysteries.... and I am not making this up http://kopimistsamfundet.se/ not to mention another case where the European court acquitted a web site that was charged against pirating movies and declared that it is not the website's (any website) fault of what its users do or transfer in the website so long as they try and stop any illegal activities, meaning that so long as they occasionally "kick out" a few users and delete links to illegal downloads they have no liability whatsoever... so I think that this be a lost war against online "piracy"... So please find another way to increase your profits without infringing on our rights of free speech and due process... unless these are no longer free countries that we so proclaim every day to the globe?!

@Xeogua, The NFL cares, not because of video games, but because of TV rights/profits. There are many non-US located websites that stream all sports games live, including NFL games. Which means I can watch my local team even if they are blacked out. Blackouts are suppose to get fans to the stadium to keep the NFL profitable. I think everyone agrees something has to be done about pirating, but the current SOPA bill is a bit on the drastic side.

I'm still confused as to why the NFL is worried about it. Are they worried about their part of Madden or are they worried about somebody pirating a game that came on a couple years ago?

I read through this and i think Epic Games are in the right.
