Eidos throws down DS Gauntlet
Classic hack-and-slash '80s game series officially coming to Nintendo's handheld this year.
Back in February, Eidos registered a new Gauntlet game with the US Entertainment Software Rating Board, and although the listing was quickly removed from the database, it was too late--the cat was out of the bag.
Now, Eidos has come clean about Gauntlet for the DS and has officially announced the title. Simply called Gauntlet, the new game will be a remake of Midway’s 1985 arcade classic hack-and-slash title.
Gauntlet takes place in a fantasy world, with 40 maps set over three realms, and gamers can choose to play as an elf, warrior, wizard, or valkyrie--each with its own strengths, weaknesses, and special abilities.
As well as single-player mode, there will be a four-player Wi-Fi co-op mode that will use the DS microphone to allow allies to communicate. A range of competitive multiplayer games are also included, such as Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, and Treasure Horde.
Gauntlet for the DS is being developed by Backbone Entertainment, a division of Foundation 9 Entertainment, and is set for release "later this year."
In the meantime, those desperate for a Gauntlet fix can download Gauntlet from Xbox Live Arcade and Gauntlet II from the PlayStation Network.
I liked the Gamecube Gauntlet I hope this won't be a only top view game
Check this out! http://ds.ign.com/articles/869/869001p1.html This game looks cool!
Yeah! Hack N' Slash to DS! Seems a decent game. I can't wait to try it out and I really hope that it'll be good!
Neato.
zennioparty, that is completely untrue. Granted there are only like 2 attributes, Strength, and Speed. But i have wasted enough quarters to know that there are actually strategic differences when you are playing with others that require different party orders depending on what you face ahead. That said, they really better add some updated game modes because i wont dare spend more than 5 bucks on a plain gauntlet port.
I also hope that there is something more indepth with the characters. While I have loved the games, the one thing that has bothered me is that.... THERE IS NO DIFFRENCE IN WHAT CHARACTER YOU CHOOSE. i think that this game could be taken to a whole DIFFRENT level if they created some real diffrenses with charaters. It would definitely add to the depth of the game.
Four-player Coop? Goodie.
Cool
Another Gauntlet huh? -I hope this version REALLY stands out, cause I own several already.
Man I used to love Gauntlet on the NES. I still play it once in a while on Midway's Arcade Treasures 2 for GC. A DS version would so rock!
Gauntlet? YAHOOO!! :)
I'd like to see a new Gauntlet for XBLA or PSN with online co-op; that'd be awesome.
i liked gaunlet legends for the GC. i hope this game is similar but at least add new stuff.
Gee, I wonder which Gamespot employee is gonna get fired for this?
I'm surprised no one has said Eidos eats kittens or something yet so I'll say it, Eidos is evil.
Can't wait to hear Stephen King's opinion of this story in the next Entertainment Weekly.
A remake ,cool. I almost thought it was just going to to be a port. I want more classics.
What are we still living in the 80's? Get a grip and go play some Galo or something sheesh....
This actually sounds good. And the Gauntlet games haven't been good in years.
Contra 4 much? Hmm, could actually be pretty good. I'll wait and see.
Sweet. I have the Gauntlet/Rampart for the GBA and it still sufficiently eats up the hours. This should be a great co-op game for the DS. I'm also interested in seeing the mic chat. Should be fun.
Sounds like fun, i've been eager for a good coop game for the ds.
This story is more exciting on IGN, they have pics that show that both screens are used for all the gameplay and will look like Legends. They also mention that the characters have been updated with new powers, such as a "glacier freeze" to stop enimies in their tracks, and the 32 diff. enimeis. But this would be the best Gauntlet ever just with the online Co-op with voice chat, if only we could play with random people, damn FCs.
i'm pretty excited...even though i don't have a ds
I hope they actually put some effort into this.
Red Warrior needs a charge station badly. Red Warriors DS is about to die.
This puppy is seriously going to need single-cart co-op for it to pertain any interest to the majority of us, given how many hack'n'slashes are just completely mindless when played alone.
I hope this is more like Gauntlet Legends
Why?
I love the related games section next to the story. It really has been released a lot :-). On a good note at least its not another virtual pet game.
I still am not sure why I bought Gauntlet on XBLA. Gauntlet was only famous back in the day due to 4 player co-op. It's the same as the original Ninja Turtles game. Neither of them were actually that great, they were just different back in the 80's.
Gauntlet's gameplay just didn't age well... In fact most old arcade games don't age well. Maybe if they changed it into an RPG...
How many more times can they release this dinosaur?
