Football league gives megapublisher reduced fees, extra year on lucrative Madden monopoly.
Gamers hoping for an officially licensed alternative to Electronic Arts' Madden NFL series now have an even longer wait ahead of them. According to a Sports Business Journal report, the football league has extended its exclusivity with EA Sports for another year. The agreement is now set to expire in 2013.
That's not all the NFL has done with EA. According to the Journal, the league has also reduced the royalties it charges the megapublisher for the license to use team names, uniforms, and logos. The reduction in fees was apparently prompted by the looming threat of a football strike, which may force the cancellation of next season. That would mean that Madden NFL 12 would be released without an active sport to support it, a factor that could affect sales.
Originally inked in 2004, the EA-NFL exclusivity deal was renewed in 2008 and had been set to expire in 2012. EA also inked an agreement with the NFL Players Association to use players' names and likenesses in Madden games through 2012. The Journal had no update on the status of that agreement, which nets the NFLPA between $30 and $40 million per year, according to Labor Department filings.
seriously EA just stop it! I'm so tired of you guys extending and extending. Why don't you just stop being Punks and having such a big Ego and try to start a partnership with 2ksports and make a GREAT football game. The game is still unrealistic and yet nothing really changed much. You guys keep on pumping money, and make crazy ads to get to the consumer. Sheesh. this sucks.
Madden is playable as a arcade game. 2k5 is still the best football sim ever created. Anyone who doesn't agree either don't know what a sim is or never played the game. The madden football team should be ashamed off all the garbage they have been putting out year after year. They probably just based their success on sales and if that's the case the gamers are to blame themselves. Easports makes some awesome games I don't understand how year after year they can screw up the two major sports in america. Everyone on both the madden team and nba elite(if you wanna call it that lol) should be fired.
Man screw this, Madden has been straight garbage on the new consoles. Give me madden 05 with updated rosters each year and I would never need another game. 2K is good to have for competition because EA needs to raise their level of product.
madden is whack i have more fun playing nfl blitz on my n64 i've played madden since 04 stopped before ps3 n 360 release gave it time n returned at 2011 waste of money
@rcafan umm, first of all 2k has undeniably made tons of great sports games. secondly, you're right, if it's your opinion that fecal matter is fun to play with, by all means, play with it.
adidas32x - 2k sports can't make a decent sports game. and its opioion base on game, madden is overall better game than anything 2k can throw out.
Has anyone purchased every Madden games since EA monopolized the NFL gaming industry? I own NFL 2K5 and since that time I think I've purchased 2 Madden games. I have Madden 2006 and 2010. I have NBA Live 2006, 2008 and 2009. I just wonder if SK Sports would start making more NFL games if EA finally released their hold on the NFL? They are paying BIG buck for that lincense and sales of Madden has been dropping year after year.
@bizuit "Madden 05 was hands down better then 2k5" really? Because gamespot gave 2k5 higher scores... BTW, it's better than, not better then.
Even if there is no lockout, I guarantee that sales will be affected... But only because the laughable product you (EA) put out year after year
For this very reason, why I have yet to buy or get into NFL football videogames. Madden /Ea football is a waste of money and time.(Once I have more than one NFL option to buy/play then I'll be back into NFL football on consoles.)
Look what happens when EA has competition: FIFA is great, NHL is great. If only Madden played up to those levels.
@TheRedTree, Madden 05 was hands down better then 2k5, just because 2k5 was 20 bucks doesn't mean it was better. Madden 05 was the year they made the most strides and the best strides which is why it was so disappointing when the franchise fell flat after that year
i refuse to buy ea products because of this and the online pass bs that ea implemented. if we want this exclusive license to end (and judging from the numerous comments on this story, we do) we need to STOP BUYING MADDEN
This is a really good move my the NFL. It guarantees a game for next year regardless of whether or not there is football, essentially forcing EA's hand.
Disgusting.... I'm sick of arcade football being DRESSED up as "simulation football'. I want REAL simulation football back! Bring back NFL 2k!!!
could this be a reaction from ea since there basketball title was cancelled and 2k is whoppin dey ass in basketball sim!!! just wondering guys, cause they do look bad by not bringing out elite, after claiming to make massive changes and plus change the name from live to elite and then flop like that, SMH!!
@jasplan, @adidas32x, it is time for some football competition. The good ol days of the 2k series especially when they got that espn representation i think in 2k3 was great. Anyone remember NFL Fever for XBOX they had some solid games as well. Last madden i think I played extensively was when they debuted hit stick!!! I've played more NCAA football more recently since 2003 more than madden
Madden without madden is dead.I have yet to play a great Madden since the ps2 years.Next Gen has had the flash and graphics, but the gameplay seems lacking and listening to Chris Collinsworth call the games made me sick. Why not call it Collinsworth NFL 2011.Time for a new NFL game bring back the 2K NFL series please.
NFL 2k5 is the best football game ever made imo. With no competition for Madden they can just keep putting out the same mediocre games and the genre doesn't improve :(
Alternate name for this articale: another year of me not playing Madden. Seriously i enjoyed backbreaker ten times more than madden 11 which i hated, the series has become stagnant with EA not having an officially licenced competator to make them actually try to improve their product. *sigh*
Eff the NFL. dont blame EA, blame the freaking NFL. the NFL doesnt care one bit about their fans. they dont care about their players, either. to hell with the NFL and the nashville oilers!
This year I finally broke down and purchased Madden, I hadn't purchased a football game since NFL 2K5. Madden was a huge disappointment, what a crappy game. NFL 2K5 might be 5/6 years old, but the commentary, replays, animations and especially the game recaps blow Madden away. It's pretty obvious that EA doesn't care anymore, they know they have a captive audience and they'll just produce roster updates until they lose their exclusivity arrangement.
well i guess im going back to BACKBREAKER. It may have its flwas, but its one incredibly fun football game
@gnfb: you make a good point but if madden had some competition maybe they would try a little harder. As for year to year improvements, nhl game do it and nba games do it. So why couldn't madden?
@dzimm: Your crazy bro. The madden team sucks. year after year same animation, same goofy looking players. They dont even look like the players when they show them upclose, especially the coaches. When you see what the nba games and nhl games have done they make madden look like a ps1 game. EA was scared of 2k games. Like one poster wrote "imagine where nfl football games would be if their was competition. EA SPORTS SUCK A$$!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's not like 2K could make a game as good as NFL2K5 at this point anyways. When that game came out, they were still being published by SEGA. Their latest attempt at football, All Pro 2k8, can only be described as lackluster. People overestimate exactly how much can be changed year to year in these games. Chances are even if they didn't have a monopoly, EA would still dominate the sports game market if only because of brand name (it works for other shoddy companies...Apple for example). So please, QQ more. Because either way, almost nothing would change with these football games
I miss the days when different developers would compete against each other with the NFL license. Ahh... 2K... How I miss you dearly. ; _ ;
I wish they would release another All Pro game. I am still playing All Pro 2k8 and a lot of the animations and graphics in that were recycled from 2k5. Let's have a new All Pro game!
@dzimm Even if another competitor came out with a game that was superior to Madden, it wouldn't have NFL players and teams, and when average-joe game buyer walks into the store, sees two football games on the shelf, but only one of them has the NFL players/teams, chances are he's going to go for that one. As for EA's development teams having the experience to make it harder for others to compete, I think most everyone would agree that Madden hasn't been much more than shovelware for the past 5 years or so and relies primarily on it's NFL exclusive license.
