EA erecting SimCity Creator on Wii, DS
New installment in venerable franchise will offer 13 different kinds of metropolises to build--including American, European, and Asian--this September.
Building and managing virtual cities is one of those genres that doesn't seem to lose popularity. The SimCity series started in 1989, designed by Will Wright--also the creator of the Sims--and since then a slew of sequels and similar titles, including City Life and Caesar, have followed.
Today, Electronic Arts announced a new game in the series for the Nintendo Wii and DS. Billed as an "accessible and light-hearted" title, SimCity Creator will let players customise their cities into a variety of regional styles. These will include American, Asian, and European city styles, although EA isn't prepared to get country specific just yet.
The gameplay for the Wii version sounds as if it will be similar to previous titles in the SimCity series, with the gamer playing as the city mayor and allocating city zones in areas such as business, retail, or residential. There will be a redesigned interface for the Wii Remote, and "hero" buildings will also be available, with some becoming unlocked depending on the current day or the time period.
SimCity Creator DS, on the other hand, will have players guiding their city from ancient times into the future. There will be four game modes: Challenge, Free Play, Chance Encounter, and Gallery.
SimCity Creator will be released on September 19 in Europe and in Australasia and on September 22 in North America. It is the second SimCity game for the DS, after SimCity DS, and it also follows the Wii Virtual Console rerelease of the SNES SimCity.
This should work well with the Wii remote
Good because Simcity societies was a failure
I agree with Ahiru-san 2000 was awesome. This one looks pretty good too.
They didn't announce the game today (yesterday now), EA announced the title on their fiscal budget along with a bunch of other Sim [insert title here] games a few months ago.
simcity 2000 is still the best one, in my opinion...
*Orgasm*
Heh. Erecting.
sebetai: You might want to try Caesar IV from Sierra Online and look up "City Building Series" on wikipedia
I've never played any of the SimCity games. But I might check this 1 out on my DS.
i hope this game isn't dumbed down.
i've always wnated to build past cities like roman or mayan. was there a sim game like that?
@RLJSlick I believe Maxis is already working on the next "true" SimCity game. Last I recall (which was a while ago, things could've changed) they were slated to release it late 09 or something, but I wouldn't be surprised if the date will slip.
I hope this one bring back some of the charm that simcity for the snes had.
Hopefully this won't be as bad as sim city societies. That game was crap.
@GoldenRamoth do you only do that with Wii games? i personally dont trust gamespot with any review anymore. i have found i extremely enjoy games that gamespot gave bad reviews to.
Ahh, city building. All I want for Christmas is for my Wii to have erections.
@ pwlodarczyk Wii games are generally easy and shallow because it is a console directed at families with younger children. A mother doesn't want to be playing a game as hard as DMC3 with their 7 year old kid.
Sim City! I hope the game will be in depth, and not look like multi-colored plastic. And as usual, i'm gonna wait for a review before I buy any game on the Wii. there's just so many bad games.... it's just not safe to buy without the review.
SimCity is only at its best when it's deep and involved. Hopefully, this will be more complex than SC Societies, but I think I speak for everyone here when I say that we'd rather have SimCity 5 than this or an expansion to Societies.
Cool idea but I sure wish EA would stop wasting time and start making a real Sim City game. What are they afraid of?
I like Sim City and look forward to this if its not a dumbed down kiddy version. If you use Google there are other screenshots out there that aren't screwed up like the one above.
Accessible and light-hearted = childish and shallow? Why do they always make everything "easy" for Wii?
Are they going to make a non-child version for the PS3 or X360?
I've never played a SimCity game, but they look pretty cool. Anyone's thoughts?
nice idea , but its a weird picture , if that are the screenies for the game then idk if it is going to be good
I'm not sure what is up with that screen shot but if you look around there are more classic sim-city style screens. Anyways I'll be watching the game's progress.
"Sounded like a nice idea but WTF is up with that pic??? Which country makes all their buildings out of UV plasitc???" It looks like one of the cities out of Dragonball series.
Flippin' A! I adore Sim City, and look forward to this eagerly.
Hey, how about a SIMTOWER sequel?
Only potential problem i see with this is creating cities takes memory. So people who use virtual console and wiiware will probably have to do some memory management (copying and deleting) before playing.
I'm all for trying new things, but the consensus is quite clearly that we want classic SC gameplay. A line has to be drawn somewhere...
--markop2003 -- "Sounded like a nice idea but WTF is up with that pic??? Which country makes all their buildings out of UV plasitc??? " ~~~~ Going to have to go with Hong Kong on that one...
Looks like some baby puked out the lego he ate for lunch.
this makes me want to get a Wii. still waiting for an uber master Sim City for 360... (sigh... or PS3)...
The problem, as always, is EA. Maxis isn't making the game anymore.
OMG what happened to Sim City. It looks like everything got coated in a shiny glass. :(
I want SimCity 5, not SimCity for children. C'mon Will Wright!
Sounded like a nice idea but WTF is up with that pic??? Which country makes all their buildings out of UV plasitc??? Looks like they havn't upgraded the engine from 4 either, gfx look really old. How about simcity 5, just like 4 but in 3d more buiilding styles and an arcade mode for just messing about and lightheartness not ruining a hardcore city builder francheise.
WTF is up with them ruining the SIm City franchise? First horrible SimCity Societies and now this? Why can't they make a REAL SimCity game? I want one in the same vein as the previous games but with updated graphics and features. Instead they try and "innovate" and fix what is not broken.
SimCity was always a fun game to build and destroy cities in. XD
I consider myself an avid gamer yet I have never played any of the SimCity, or Tycoon games...
