Christ, I thought this old chestnut was buried when OnLive failed. Greed continues to reign over common sense though, it would seem.
Senior director of corporate communications at publisher says cloud-gaming through TV a "long-term opportunity" that could arrive by 2017.
Earlier today, sources told Bloomberg that current platform holders Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo could soon be under pressure from major cable companies like Verizon and Comcast, which are reportedly looking to expand into cloud-gaming. Electronic Arts was specifically called out in the report as a potential partner, and at the time, the studio had nothing to say. But that has changed.
EA senior director of corporate communications John Reseburg told GameSpot today that connected TV experiences like those mentioned in the report, while a potentially lucrative prospect, are not one of the company's immediate objectives.
“Connected TV represents a major opportunity for gaming on the five-year horizon," Reseburg said. "It’s long-term opportunity, but it’s another technology that has a lot of potential to dramatically expand our audience.”
If the report proves accurate, Verizon, Comcast, AT&T, and Time Warner will all launch their own cloud-gaming efforts by 2014. Players would use generic controllers instead of inputs from Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo, and some of these carriers are reportedly exploring software that turns smartphones into controllers.
They want their toxic little claws in everything, seems to be an upward trend lately. Its as if when a company becomes large enough, they instantly try to insert themselves into all other business areas. The world is one big a$$ monopoly board...craziness
Translation: Connected TV represents a major opportunity for us to make deals with content providers to force Origin onto their customers.
Spoiler alert: EA will wait until someone else proves this is a successful idea first, then they'll scramble to copy it a year too late while somehow omitting every aspect people liked about the original.
If this is the future of gaming, I will not be a part of it.
If EA is exploring this, it is not good for the consumer.
Cloud gaming would suck a$$, it's cool your there playing Halo 25 online with friends in a ranked match and it's a heated battle and your connection goes out for a couple seconds costing you the match....come to find out it was road construction a block over that caused the outage.....this crap happens already under normal conditions....
Also I haven't subscribed to cable since 1999 and what I've seen of TV it's gotten worse that when I left. I do download shows that interest me though...
NCIS, NCIS LA, Sons Of Anarchy, Walking Dead, I used to get Terminator when it was on and I go for a lot of older shows if I can find them.....
I'd never get a sub for cable just to play games....
OVERHEARD AT EA HEADQUARTERS
Beavis: Hey Butthead, huh huh, huh huh, we should fire all the consoles.
Butthead: Yeah... that would be cool... huh huh, huh huh... like then we could offer cloud gaming... yeah... that would be cool...
Beavis: Fire, FIRE, FIIIIIRE
Butthead: We can tell people the games are free... huh huh, huh huh, and then like microtransaction them to death... that would be cool
Beavis: And then we'll score... SCORE SCORE
Butthead: Yeah... if we tell people to use their smartphone as controllers, we can like score with chicks and stuff.
Beavis: Yeah... Yeah... ...that be cool
Please evil EA keep your greedy noses off our tvs we don't need you greedy company to robbed us blind with your greedy hands and you already have done damaged to game industry and your evil company already have enough money so you don't need to ruin any more gaming for us gamers and try to keep your greedy nose out Microsoft,Sony ,Nintendo gaming communities and keep your greeedy hands to yourself and try not take over the game industry cause not very many gamers like your company and the way you're trying your hardest ruin gamming for everyone
Cloud streaming services for games? Not for me, won't even look at them until they find a way to make mods work with them. Can you imagine a world where a massive Skyrim style game launched that you couldn't mod?
You know what? EA stop. Just stop. Stop talking. And Makuch, stop reporting what EA says... nobody trusts them or gives a sh!t about what EA executives think or say. They're NOT gamers. They're among the worst offenders in the industry that are killing games.
Good - keep the crappy cloud gaming out of consoles - I hope the do really well, casual gamers are happy with the services, and gaming consoles can return to the core.
who cares about what ea thinks. HEY GAMESPOT STOP POSTING SHITTY ARTICLES ABOUT WHAT EA THINKS, and maybe theyll fucking die like they are suppose to. its fucking obvious how hated EA is around the game spot community, do us a favor and stop posting about EA, Eddie Makuch, you moron.
f#ck me i saw this coming years ago ,digital download straight to your "smart tv" we can all play in the same playground then. Will it be the end of the pc ??? storage media needed only in the tv's with cloud storage accompanying it...? it takes soooo long though, get on with it so technology can move forward b4 i die !!! i want floating cars i want holographic interface gaming :)
And if you're late on your cable bill, or if you break a contract with your provider, what then?
That's right kids.... static.
I vote "NO".
The whole end game of the Cloud computing mantra is to empower the publishers, and will turn gaming into a rental service (Paying to play games on a remote server - you own nothing). I will probably give up on gaming when this eventuates.
All EA staffs are connected with long range cables in their assholes and is controlled by the biggest asshole John Retardetello.
Well at least this is about 5 years off, which seems like a long time for them to be coming out with this now. Wait, with the rapid advancement of technology how in the hell is this not less than 5, like maybe a year or two? This is not something that will take them 5 years to get out to the public. Anyway, I hope it doesn't happen because I hate the whole digital age.
Most the articles written by this Eddie Makuch aren't news. He isn't the only one of course. He just seems to write the majority of them. Sorry Eddie, I got nothing against you other than that.
Wait, wait, a'wait a minute now. You are telling me I can play my games...
- With an always online requirement,
- No competition for pricing on content,
- No way to keep my games or change provider,
- Provided over a premium subscription,
- With a very small choice of games, no peripherals
- And no first party titles, all with heavily artifacted image quality
- And EA... EA! thinks this is something I should want?
Well, smack my arse and call me sold!
