Video Q&A: Game Studios boss Phil Spencer says internal development houses will integrate motion-sensing tech, but no mandate to do so.
LOS ANGELES--Microsoft continued to heavily push Kinect functionality at its 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo media briefing, with the publisher trotting out a number of third parties who had committed to the Xbox 360's motion-sensing technology. Of course, one of the biggest advocates for Kinect is remains the platform holder itself.
In an interview with GameSpot, Microsoft Game Studios head Phil Spencer said that he believes all first-party games going forward will incorporate Kinect functionality.
"It's not a mandate that everything we do in first party has to support Kinect right now," he said. "But I will say, specifically with voice, that there are some things that just seem to make navigating and playing games so much easier...that I would guess the answer will be yes in the end that you'll see all first-party games using some form of Kinect functionality."
"Whether it's voice in Forza or head tracking in Forza, which you wouldn't say is somehow turning the Forza gameplay experience on its head," he continued. "Rather, it's just using the advantages of what Kinect brings to make the experience better. So I think there's some specific examples where Kinect makes everything better."

kinect the most boring piece of crap ever made so far...also microsoft has the worst conference since first xbox came out...almost 2 hours of crapy disney stuff and kids......im glad i found a noob t osell my xbox..since microcave try to steal al lthe casual players the ycan get but failed miserably...more kinect more halos..nothing new,no more creativity from them all the ycan do is throwin a halo or gears every years thats all.2011 and 2012 zero games from microsoft except flopza and gears.glad my ps3 get 3 new ip's and ff13 versus exclusive.bb microsoft
@redweed hehe, cheers to the american dream. The fish-eye lens is actually a pretty good idea, could possibly help it from needing to pivot as much.
Hmm they're really trying to shove the Kinect down our throats. Hopefully the next generation xbox 360 isn't completely geared toward using the Kinect. I like using my controller thank you very much... I'm not the type of person that will try to imagine holding a non-existent weapon in my hands out of thin air, I'd probably look ridiculous and it'll feel awkward. I know the Kinect is there just to enhance the experience but come on at least have the decency to release games that will cater to a variety of different gamers along with the Kinect when it first came out.
Ugh... Stop trying to shoehorn Kinect into games that don't need it. Replacing button presses with voice commands isn't innovative, it's annoying. Replacing well made menu systems with confusing hand gestures also doesn't do it for anyone. No one is going to use these features. They'll try them out because they're a novelty, then they'll never use them again. Kinect is for casuals. We all know it. Just stick to making party games and leave our core games alone and we'll all get along fine. Oh wait. What core games? That's right - I forgot Microsoft and 3rd party developers have now all but abandoned cool, exclusives on the 360.
im not a fanboy at all..i have all the consoles..only reason i bought kinect is that i like to have everything..the only cool game for kinect is dance central..other than that, all the others are just trash..i didn't get the ps move cause it's just another disappointment just like the wii..if you don't like dance central, dont even spend your money on the kinect
@mfall121 No, that's not the case at all. You and almost everyone else here downing the kinect have failed at reading comprehension. Kinect features will be ADDED to every first party game. Kinect will not be REQUIRED for any of them. It will simply add features.
Some of you need to stop playing games and take reading comprehension. Some form of Kinect will be incorporated in most 1st party games. Using Forza as an example, being able to move the view using Kinect is an option; it's not required or a game breaker if you don't have Kinect. Just use the controller as you have always been doing. If you have Kinect, your gaming experience can be made more immersive and if you don't then you will play the game like you've always been doing. What don't you people get?
Ever since Kinect came out, I noticed that I prefer the PS3 as they seem to have all the good games and exclusives. The multi-platform games I pick up are for PS3 now. All I read and hear about the 360 now is kinect kinect kinect! It's like a nightmare. Instead of getting awesome exclusives they have kinect kinect kinect! The last game I bought for my 360 was Mass Effect 2 and now I'll be getting Mass Effect 3 on PS3 since it's now multi-platform and since the 360 version has the lame kinect gimmick that is voice command, which they can do without the need of kinect. End rant...
I Don't Know Guys But I Have A Strange Feeling About This !!! I Hope Microsoft Dissapoint Us With The Kinect First Party Project :(
Microsoft seems really determined to ram Kinect down our throats like it or not. Why people keep asking are they not just using the headset for voice? Because this way they can force you to buy Kinect?
So what your telling me Microsoft is that if I want to play Halo 4 on my 360 I will have to buy a kinect...... Guess I'll get the pc version for this title.
Just brought a kinect have had the 360 since it first come out I think its a nice add on for the family to enjoy while i like the more serious gams, and if they integrate voice commands into games like fifa 12 and gears with the odd gesture (not full jumping around stuff) all the better imo
How will ppl be buying Wii U to get away from motion control, when if you want multiple players then others will have to use Wii motes. Apart from Kinect only games they are not forcing ppl to use kinect so if you don't like what it stands for then don't buy it.
they are killing the 360 by this...even nintendo went out of this stupid casual stuff that microsoft is trying to do.
Quote from article: "It's not a mandate that everything we do in first-party has to support Kinect right now," he said. "But I will say, specifically with voice, that there are some things that just seem to make navigating and playing games so much easier, that I would guess the answer will be yes in the end, that you'll see all first-party games using some form of Kinect functionality." Truth be told; Tom Clancy's End War did Voice Commands well and I don't see why you can't just do voice support (via Update) with the 360's headset that came with every 360?!? So I actually need to buy Kinect for Mass Effect 3 to do any voice commands for something that I can easily unlock for the PC version of the game via Mod? I think not MS!
Yeah because after spending money buying an xbox, being fleeced hard paying for extra gamepads, an xbox wireless adapter, monthly live subscription.. (not to mention the money I've paid to get rid of the RRoD) I'm really going to pay for this just so I can talk to some AI and play my games like I'm doing flash dance. Get a grip. Even developers are going down the same route. Battlefield 3 has multiple DLCs being developed and the game isn't even released yet! I wonder if we'll have to pay extra to play the game co-op like Bad Company 2. I'm starting to wonder if the pirates have the right idea.
@ 00J I agree. M$ has to get out of hardware because they are the worst at it. They should just make games for other systems. It'd be nice to see Sega back. Sony, Sega and Nintendo would be cool. I'm so sick of 360. I loved the original Xbox, but 360, not so much.
Let them use Kinect, saves people money in the long run. You see Nintendo's next smart move, making the Wii U single player with that 1 special controller, i've been following Nintendo since Super Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong first came out, and Nintendo has always been 1 step ahead of the game. You see what they are doing? They are reversing course back to a non-motion controller system, for strong single player games. They will gather the migration of hard cores gamers from Playstation and XBox, because they are copying their inovative Motion controller technology. When people can get good Nintendo "non-motion" games on Nintendo systems people will be buying Nintendo's to get away from the Motion garbage. Sega are you ready to get back into the Console arena? Make a console along side Nintendo's, the Dreamcast was pretty much the pinnacle of console technology and Dreamcast games still look awesome in 2011, a little R&D and Sega could pick back up where they left off with the Dreamcast in Months they could be back in the game! I'd like to see a 64 bit Sega Console.
The onstage demo with kinect and ghost recon and the guy squatting down pretending to use a gun was the most hilarious thing I've ever seen. Thanks but no thanks! There's a time and place for motion controls, but playing shooters with an imaginary gun is simply dumb and just plain silly looking.
i dont care if they do this or not, as long as i can still play with my controller kinect for mass efect and ghost recon is looking really cool, but for me thats the only 2 games in which kinect would be good to use, i dont see me wasting money on it just because of 2 games
Didn't we all see this 4 years ago when Nintendo showed motion control. Sony and Microsoft are for some reason obsessed with this now. Unlike Sony, however, Microsoft has very little in the way of exclusives this year. Forza is the only game I care about. Gears is Gears. I saw the Stage Demo of the Star Wars Kinect game and it was pathetic. Who wants to jump up and down like a clown? Dancing games ok, party games, sports mini games like bowling or tennis ...fiine..but the Wii has that already. I have all 3 consoles, my Wii collects dust. I'm starting to get back into PC gaming (unless there's motion control coming to that:O :)
Based on what games I was interested in and saw I can only say this, I think the option in ME3 to order your squad in combat or to activate dialog choices or whatever else they do with Kinect seems to make sense for Mass Effect but personally I don't see myself dropping $100 on Kinect and I don't see myself talking to the game that to me borders on insanity......seriously people end up in the rubber room for talking to themselves.....
Microsoft has really dropped the ball here. They seem hellbent on destroying their own console. Look at the lack of new exclusives. They are ignoring the core audience of the Xbox 360 and they are moving on to casualised Kinect shovelware. Have fun console gamers!
Not sure how I feel about all that. One could easily read this as MS saying they are going to shove the Kinect down every Xbox owners throat by ham-fisting arbitrary Kinect functionality into every first party game. Even if it doesn't make sense to have it in the game in the first place.
Well, I'll be fin if a game like Ghost recon has kinect, or me3, just as long as i can still use my classic controller. :)
I love my wii and kinect is the evolution of motion control More games for kinect Play in a diferent Way ... play with controler is the past of gaming ... welcome to the Future play with Kinect Very good games for kinect im very happy thanks Microsoft finaly more games for kinect
Kinect Rules if you donīt like it play games with the controler Kinect sports 2 , Fable, Ryse, star wars , Forza 4 , Dance centra 2 , Mass effect Excelent Kinect the best ever made a new Era in game controle Epic
Sorry but I find the whole motion control scene to be a complete waste of my time. Of course I'm not speaking for everybody, just my opinion that's all.
@Johny_47, If you like the genre, i cannot recommend Dance Central enough, its quite simply the best dance based game available today, mainly due to the fact that you need to use your whole body, and not simply wave a wand around. Although to be fair, it may be worth waiting for DC2. Kinect definately has its place, it isnt design to replace the standard controller, but simply to add an 'OPTIONAL' extra dimension to controller based games. However after seeing 'Rise of Nightmares' coupled with the advent of Kinect 'Finger Tracking' i doubt it will be long before we begin to see decent FPS & TPS games, which lets face it are severley lacking.
@Buck_Swaggler and I suppose your not all beautiful, wealthy, white, middle class and hang around coffee shops. Pff TV does not lie!! The constant repeats of Friends has had zero effect on me ;) Next you'll be telling me you don't go to a bar where everybody knows your name and they're always glad you came!!! :) It beats me why they did not think of using a fish-eye lens for the camera?
Very nice to hear, maybe now they'll put alot of thought, imagination and effort into the kinect games, I just bought kinect and overall I like it, only have kinect adventures but I love the reflex levels. I played with a friend of mine from America and it's strange to hear someone out of breath over the headset haha =P Good fun, haven't tried Dance Central yet.
Well I am personally looking forward to kinect integration into some of my future favorite core games! It would only add to them, so more power to it. :)
Well i think Kinect is great, and offers a wide range of possibilities from full blown Kinect titles (Rise of Nightmares, etc) to simply enhancing an already superb 'Core' gaming experience (Forza 4). Ultimately MS designed the technology, but its up to developers to harness it. Personally, i was pleased to see Rise of Nightmares using Kinect properly (full body tracking), moving forwards, backwards, left, right etc, we need more games like this now.
people always find something to complain about no matter what, just because kinect is integrated into first party games means that it will be the core gameplay aspect, kinect is just another option to the controller, so the game can be experienced in a different way, you will still be able to use your standard controller, and in some games kinect is being used to enhance the gaming experience eg head tracking in forza 4, while racing you can look out the window while in cockpit view to see when an opponent is passing you, which uses head tracking, there are many interesting ways developers can use kinect without spoiling the game. the games that are kinect only, are games like kinect sports and dance central off course, made soley for the kinect. only narrow minded people wont see the benefit of kinect used to enhance the gaming experience.
@Darth_Ultima You don't need kinect for voice command. Tom clancy's End War had voice command. Everyone has a headset already. They could have put voice command in Mass effect anyway, they dont need kinect.
