Capcom confirms Screen Gems-produced live-action adaptation of Ninja Theory's upcoming origin story; franchise sales top 10 million.
LOS ANGELES--Capcom has had a relatively muted presence at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, but it isn't outright absent. As part of this year's show, the publisher confirmed reports from earlier this year that it would collaborating with Sony Pictures' Screen Gems label on a live-action film adaptation for its Devil May Cry franchise.
According to this week's announcement, the film will be based on the new Devil May Cry. A reboot for the franchise, DMC is in development at Heavenly Sword studio Ninja Theory, and it is being positioned as an origin story for protagonist, Dante. DMC is in development for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, but Capcom has yet to offer a release window for the project.
As previously reported, the Devil May Cry film is being written by Kyle Ward, who has also done screenplays for Eidos' upcoming films Hitman 2 and Kane and Lynch.
Along with today's announcement, Capcom offered a sales update for the Devil May Cry franchise, saying the series has now sold more than 10 million units worldwide. The original installment was released in 2001 for the PlayStation 2. It was followed by Devil May Cry 2 in 2003, Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening in 2005, and Devil May Cry 4 in 2008.

DMC is damned. The city playground is all in ruins. One place that could change DMC from becoming a movie is the most abvious place any hardcore videogame player can find. That place being in a city park Final Fantasy 7. Devil film happens (poster - elevator with arrow button) , squaresoft logo (arrow). Sephiroth bones remains and only time will tell. Sephiroth the one winged angel , the bringer of videogames.
People should know not to judge games unless they played it; so to you morons who dont even know anything about the movie and game dont claim that its going to be a failure cause for all you know it might turn out to be the best DMC ever. Same thing goes for other games, movies, shows, books e.t.c.
what the hell, this game not out yet and there is a upcoming movie based on it, and 10 million sales is not involved this sh*!t game
Regardless, I really feel Dante's storyline deserved better. A reboot? I'm just hoping the white-hair-transformation is the reason why we got the 'full-version' Dante, back in last gen. THERE'S SO MUCH I WISH I COULD SAY!!! BUT I DON"T HAVE ENOUGH FINGERS TO KEEP PACE WITH MY THOUGHTS *cough!..fury..cough!*.. AARRGH x(!!!!
wtf lol. the movie should be for DMC3. its the best devil may cry game ever, followed by devil may cry 1. thats only my opinion. i dont think im gonna like a movie about DMC with this style for dante :/ so i would say the reversed Vergil line ... " now im NOT MOTIVATED " !!! MAKE AN EPIC MOVIE WITH DANTE AND VERGIL FOR THE LOVE OF DMC FANS. if u want fan service add trish and lady dosent matter.
So Dante's now an emo goth dude whose super power is changing his hair color? Power of "DISTRACTION"! Combo with "do these shoes go with this sword" and complete with "Oh, my coat is red now" and all demons will be incapacitated by laughter. Dante wins. Giant lava spiders everywhere are quaking in their exoskeletons.
Bring back the ORIGIONAL Dante!!!! I really hope that thier looking at these comments and the negitive feedback all over the web...not that I think they'll change the game this far inton production but games have been redone for less
U guys do know the forth game is the one that screwed over the series right? Capcom should have kept it on PlayStation & ended it correctly like what Konami did with the MGS series. Im saying that cause when they put it on 360 they had to appeal to a new audience so they had to make a story that was simple so pretty much anyone could understand it. It didnt make sense to do that with the last game of the series... cause it should have been over the top and only intended for the long time fans. This new game should have been the game to introduce new fans in the series not #4.They also could have made 2-3 DMC games on psp like what Konami did with MGS but instead of Dante they could have done it on his dad or even make the forth game about his dad. I think people r mad cause Capcom screwed over not just the DMC series but the long time fans as well with the 4th game and now there trying to correct there mistake by starting all over again. Right now Im uncertain about this game. I have more negative feelings than positive towards this game after playing #4. But after what they have said and from what I have seen I think I know what there doing, but I still I cant help but have negative feelings towards this game...
Why do people hope that a game turns out to be bad just because a developer tries something different? Honestly, I've been waiting for the sequal to devil may cry 2, but instead they gave us 2 games set before it. Now we are getting a game set before everything. Oh well, it's a game that people dedicate years of their lives creating and just 10 seconds for some nerdy teenager to express their loathing for it. Grow up and if you don't like it; don't buy it.
Just taking a swat in the dark but...we all know the game is going to suck. That means the movie will probably suck 10x worse T.T
Everyone is always so negative. Don't like it, then don't worry about it, not like you're spending money on it. Let those of use who actually want to play and see this enjoy it. Yes I have played every DMC game to date and enjoyed most of them. Now let there be Thumbs down on my post!
Pass on both the game and film. I don't want an emo Dante. How about you chuck this away, Capcom, and give fans what they want, more answers about the relationship between Vergil, Dante and Nero. If you made that relationship Vergil beating up Nero to get his sword back then that'd be a plus ;)
So basically "Devil May Cry has been really successful for us with over 10 million copies sold. Thanks for all the support from our loyals fans but we are going to completely destroy the character you have come to love over the past 10 years, we're not even going to say sorry"
And maybe Tameen will play Dante in the movie too, huh? But I guess it's for the best, games to movies are rarely good. And they can't possibly ruin the new "Dante" since he's already hit rock bottom.
hate the new look and a movie about the new game and not the cool old dante just more butthurt for fans
After Dante's Awekening and DMC 4, it looked like Capcom was really in the right direction. But why a reboot ?? I wanna know about the origin of Nero's arm and it's link with Vergil. Well, I guess there is still hope. '-'
Not hip abput the movie but I've been excited for the game since it was announced. This prequal will save the franchise because the last 3 games sucked. Ninja Theory is brilliant and I love the direction they're going in.
An unwanted reboot made by a team that cannot do combat nor hold a steady framerate (of which will now be 30 instead of the DMC usual 60, thanks Unreal Engine), born with no respect towards the franchise itself (Actually saying the old Dante isn't "cool" outside of bars in Tokyo) is now getting it's own videogame adaptation movie, the likes of which are amazingly prone to bombing. Match made in heaven.
capcom has a suprise for us i swear.....i know that dante is fake or the in_game dmc is just a flashback or sth else but i dont care capcom knows that if he reboot the dmc..this series will destroy!!
Although everyone hated DMC5 Capcom is still stubbornly holding on to it, you know fan-feedback is very important you know that Capcom?
dante and nero's dress style and just the whole cinematography of the previous games' cutscenes couldve already fit a movie. if this movie based on the ninja theory dmc goes through, ill probably pass on it. if by some unlikely turn of fate that they decide to base it on the classics, then im there dude.
As a thanks for buying 10 million copies of DMC we thought we'd completely change the the design of the main character everyone seems to like so much........... .... Farewell DMC, it was fun. Luckily I like Ninja Gaiden better anyway.
i still dont understand why capcom is letting all these other hands touch one of their better selling ip's
I know you won't go see the movie and I probably won't either, but hey movies worked different than games and just because we the fans of the games don't show up, doesn't necessarily mean it will flop; prime example the Resident Evil movies, they keep making more money with each one Hollywood puts out and does that mean that they are great ... Well from a fan of the games perspective of course we're gonna say no, but keep mind there are more people who don't play video games than people who do so there is a good chance it could possibly do big numbers without us going out and spending our money on it. As for the game itself .... Well I really don't what to tell some you guys who continuously sh!ts on it. I mean you all wanted white hair and well they gave you white hair (in the form of the devil trigger) and the stylized action is still there sooooooo.... Now what's the problem???-__-
I love the new Dante and theme, and people need to embrace this kind of change from the developers. If not, then we'll be getting 3 different companies trying to make there own version of a single franchise until its dead (CoD)....
Funny that the devs of the game refuse to listen to MOST of the community who plainly puked on the messed-up Dante redesign. I know I won't buy a game where the devs can't find at least a common ground with the community. Recent Sonic games or Dragon Age 2 anyone?
well this pretty much puts the icing on the cake... garbage relaunch, with the movie industry making crappy adaptions of video games... just when you think things can't get any worse for Devil may cry... you get every corporate money hungry exec trying to capitalize on Twilight! HEY NINJA THEORY JUST BRING BACK THE ORIGINAL DANTE!
Personally I would have rather they use Dante's Awakening to base a movie off of, but hopefully the new game doesn't disappoint.
I don't know what to expect from the game's story so I have no idea what the film's gonna be like. What I can be sure of is that no-one will be happy with the casting of Dante.
Strangely, I had the feeling a Devil May Cry movie would be announced soon. It's just that I thought they wouldn't base it around this cruddy reboot many people are still skeptical about.
