Hail to the Icons pack features four new maps and weapons, three new multiplayer modes; add-on free to First Access Club members.
After taking the development torch on Duke Nukem Forever, Gearbox saw the troubled project to its completion last month. The Texas-based studio isn't done with Duke just yet, as today the developer detailed the first downloadable content for the first-person shooter, due out this fall.
Dubbed the Hail to the Icons Parody Pack, the add-on will include four new maps, four new weapons, and three new modes, all for the multiplayer portion of the game. The new maps will have nods to previous first-person shooters like Call of Duty and Doom, while the new modes include Freeze Tag, Hot Potato, and the free-for-all Hail to the King mode.
The Hail to the Icons pack will be free for members of the First Access Club. Originally announced just weeks before the game launched, membership in the First Access Club was limited to gamers who had preordered Duke Nukem Forever from specific retailers or purchased Gearbox's previous first-person shooter, the Borderlands Game of the Year edition.
Gearbox did not confirm a price for the Hail to the Icons pack. However, when the First Access Club was originally announced, the developer indicated that the multiplayer add-on would tentatively sell separately for $10 on all platforms.
After well over a decade in development, Duke Nukem Forever made its delayed debut in stores last month. While Duke disappointed critics and analysts alike, it sold enough copies to rank second on the NPD Group's list of best-selling US retail games for the month of June.
@Frame_Dragger I don't know, it was just fun, if it wasn't so laggy though, Something about it I liked :P
@GamerNerdTalk Metal Gear Solid 4 actually had 3 DLC Map Packs, You couldn't buy them on the PSN Store though. I think you could only get them from the Konami website through the PS3 Browser
@smellyfeet Lol! :P I actually enjoyed the multi-player of Duke Nukem Forever, it was laggy as hell, but still fun. And the add-on being free for First Access Club Members is nice.
While you're at it Gearbox, make the next Borderlands patch completely broken - every gun that you find in a chest crashes the game and once you restart it, every enemy is level -19396.
One thing to say to every that has bashed this game.... Your too used to the modern day FPS games. This game was totally old school. I mean the enemies sometimes got stuck but when i played i didnt have that problem at all really... maybe once or twice my whole play thru. You all are bashing it because youve gotten so used to all the fps games out in the past decade. I personally loved this game, sure the load times were annoying but i got over it pretty fast, the only time they were really annoying was when you got stuck at a point and kept dying. I will def buy this DLC. Ive played all the multiplayer maps to death already, ill never get tired of hollywood holocaust of course tho haha. But yeah just saying most people didnt like it for that reason. and im sure i'll get a bunch of crap for saying this but do i care? absolutely not.
.... so many haters. I'm getting this ad-on any way. I know there will be a better Duke game in the future so might as well try and enjoy this trash while it lasts.
I could take a dump, write Duke Nukem on it and sell to the fanboys saying it's chocolate cake!! I'm rich!!
if anything it should be a free patch for all the thing that were wrong on the game, or something to make the game more fun and less boring.
I feel totally cheated for being in the First Access Club even though it was free. Gearbox is a letdown. First they don't have an ending to Borderlands, then they make you beat the game twice to actually beat it. Just to meet publishers demands. Then they release another unfinished game after hyping it for almost a year, just to disappoint all the people who had been looking forward to DNF. Randy Pritchard is great at hyping things just to not deliver. And I've lost respect for him and the company.
@Tripwolf: Dude, it wasn't just critics that hated this game. DNF wasn't some multi-level conspiracy to hate on Duke. Fans everywhere (myself including) were completely let down by this game. Do you think ppl enjoy bashing a gaming legend? I don't. But I still like Duke, but the 1998 Duke, not this 2011 mess. I'm angry this game was released in the state it was in. Its basically a glitchy, ugly pre-beta on the original Xbox looking piece of garbage that should've just stayed on the shelves in developement.
lmao! seriously? You'd think Gearbox would lay low and try to forget this Duke mess they contributed to. Now they want to release a DLC reminder of their epic failure?! I think Pitchford should've made a public apology at the comic-con and dumped the remaining copies of DNF into the landfil with all the Atari E.T. games
I imagine most people felt robbed with the game itself... why would you buy DLC for such an awful game?
@pakhair I thought DNF had a two weapon limit, regenerating health and 'story' levels with no enemies. Is that old school?
omg! why would they release a DLC for the thousands of people that play this game online! dont they know the reviewers didnt like it! the developers should listen to the reviews and ignore the thousands of people that would gladly pay for it! now that's smart business!
God I know the reviews were terrible and they should be, Everything I can think about this game is buggy or broken from graphics to sound to enemy types to loading time e.t.c BUT THERE IS ONE THING that reviewers forgot to tell this game is old school fun, If you appreciated games of last gen with tons of bugs but fun moments, It's definitely worth a try. The game is humourous, has variety, is unique, is fun, the old school puzzles are interesting and duke is a man with style. BELIEVE IT guys I was waiting for it since ages and the reviews turned me down completely but still I thought of giving it a shot and I do not regret it, it's darn fun. First thing do not expect a lot and take it's flaws a little kindly and try to take it as old school and believe it's worth every penny. I'm not saying it's a good game, it's definitely flawed and the rating can't be higher then 5.5 or 6 due to tons of shortcomings but it's fun for sure
Oh great....so now instead of leaving Duke's coffin alone and letting the man rest in what peace he has left....their gonna burn his body, piss on his ashes, and then chuck the ashes into the ocean. Seriously, you guys killed him. :x Let him rest in @#$%ing peace! :(
@bl00dfist actually Doom and Quake are the two games that evolved the first person shooter the most, and wolfenstein as well. Compared to games like Quake, Duke Nukem 3D doesn't even compare.
I don't get why a game like this gets DLC. Metal Gear Solid 4 never got any DLC, nor did Metroid Prime 3: Curruption. But yet this game does.... :(
Who would buy this? Duke Nukem seems exactly like Q3 Arena just with different weapons and skins. How do they expect to sell a game when the idea is 15 years old.
Lol really hard on this one. Still gonna save it with DLC packs is a positive attitude shown by the developer
It's weird for me because I didn't like the game but I didn't hate it either, but since the critics hated it so much i'm left in a position where i have to defend it, because the game is just not as bad as they are saying.
I'm not surprised by this. Yes, it sold well, and that's why there's DLC, but is anyone going to buy it? Does anyone even play the multiplayer for this game?
to all the duke haters, just remember, without duke3d you wouldn't have your little COD games. and for the record, duke forever > black ops. At least duke tryed to be different, not just put in new skins and a new coat of paint and call it a new game and charge full price for it.
This news got the most comments, because almost everyone here to say the game is rubbish...DNF is not rubbish-there is no category nowdays like this shooting game, lot of "gamers" don't even know Redneck Rampage or Shadow Samurai-awesome FUN shooting games.Over 10 years ideas in this game, multiplayer just to follow trends-single player the best.I DUNNO WHAT WAS THE LAST TIME I WAS SMILING THIS MUCH ON A GAME!! If the best graphic and the swearing at someone online the most important than you are just a person who playing games-not a gamer.
The DLC should be free for all because of how 'unfinished' the game is, I have it and have completed it but everytime I played it I missed the old ones like Time to Kill, especially that one, it's fun for a while but even Duke's one liner's are not as cool and funny as the older games. I'm not going to 'nit pick' at it, most reviewers have already done that, just could have been SO much more than it is. Should have worked on a serious update to make it better first than his I think.
DNF feels unpolished and unfinished, the gameplay is very average with nothing special or redeeming about. And the visuals look as though they threw a crap ton of bloom over everything to try and mask the 2005 looking visual design. Very bad game for $60, hell i'd wait till it's at least $15-$20 in the bargain bin.
So many years and this is DLC? there you go.. DLC is a joke! unless they are updating a 1 to 4 year old game its useless. This should have been on the disc. Freaking members sucks.
yes, people do play this game, it's really fast and easy to get into a online match and yes, people will get this DLC cuz people like playing it and want more content for multiplayer and no, no one cares if you hate it because those of us still playing are having a blast
The PC version of the game still deserved at least a 5.5 or a 6. Shame on you Gamespot for jumping on the hate wagon with a miserable 3.5
