What's the point FOX? It's in books and movies and every other medium, besides, who DOESN'T like a little sexism? Jamia Wilson says "These depictions of women are extremely harmful, especially to young women." ; lol, harmful? In what way exactly? Young women? Hello..... young women aren't playing this game, it's rated "M", and the few that might have seen worse some where else. "the game opens with a scene where Duke is seen receiving implied fellatio from twins in school getups.", "vice president Jamia Wilson takes severe offense", minus the twin, my girlfriend doesn't take offense and even enjoys this behavior. When stuff like this, or much "worse", is in movies or books nobody seems to care, funny how that works.
News outlet says Gearbox Software's M-rated action game "takes sexism to a new level"; Women's Media Center VP calls game's depiction of women "extremely harmful."
In early February, Fox News slammed Bulletstorm, questioning whether it was the "worst video game in the world." Now, the Rupert Murdoch-owned news outlet is taking up arms against Gearbox Software's long-awaited Duke Nukem Forever, calling it "awfully sexist."
According to an article on FoxNews.com, 1996's Duke Nukem 3D--"which made millions for its developers and transformed the entire world of video games--depicted women as strippers and prostitutes." And now, according to Fox, Duke Nukem Forever is primed to "take sexism to a new level."
To illustrate its point, the story says the game opens with a scene where Duke is seen receiving implied fellatio from twins in school getups. This is where Women's Media Center vice president Jamia Wilson takes severe offense.
"It was offensive then and it's even more offensive now," she told Fox News. "These depictions of women are extremely harmful, especially to young women."
Specifically, the scathing article's main focus is on Duke Nukem Forever's Capture the Babe multiplayer mode. This game mode--according to the Official Xbox Magazine (via Eurogamer)--has players carrying a character, the Babe, around. If she yells, players are given the option to slap her.
Fox News also brought up the Entertainment Software Rating Board--which slapped an M for Mature rating on Duke Nukem Forever--and quoted group spokesperson Eliot Mizrachi.
"This game carries a Mature rating indicating that it's intended for ages 17 and up, and retailers overwhelmingly enforce their store policies requiring that M-rated games not be sold to a customer under that age without a parent's consent," he said.
A passage from Duke Nukem Forever's classification rationale statement reads, "A few sequences strongly imply sexual acts: two women appear to perform fellatio on the central character (e.g., raising their heads from his lap)--though there is no actual depiction of the sex act; Duke moans and leans up against the wall of a bathroom stall (furnished with a hole)--it is implied that a sex act (not depicted) occurs."
Duke Nukem Forever was originally pegged to debut on May 3, but just last week the long-in-development action game suffered a delay. The game is now due out internationally on June 10 and in North America on June 14. For more on the title, check out GameSpot's most recent hands-on preview.
lol guys children WILL play this like they do with GTA but still movie have much worse sexual contents(even the 16+ ones) so why being so shocked? only cos its interactive????(the slapping thingy mught be fun with kinect... lol) pc ftw
God, why do people take this stuff so seriously??? The whole reason to allow this in a digital medium is to keep it out of normal every-day life. I wouldn't dream of treating a woman Duke-style in real life (unless she was into that sorta thing *wink*wink*)... but... in the virtual world, exaggerated polygons and all, I see absolutely no harm. The problem ISN'T games themselves. The problem is a completely uneducated public that can't tell the difference between fantasy and reality. When're people gonna grow up and no longer have to be babied like this?
The Witcher 2 has full frontal nudity and various sexual positions in-game. But since it's a pc exclusive, fox news didn't bash it. SUPPORT FOX NEWS FOR PC GAMING!
Extremely harmful? Especially to young women? Fox news, could you do me a personal favor? Shut the f*ck up. As if this is the first game to have sexual stuff in it. For that matter, this is news worthy?
It really sucks that there are so many people in America telling us what we can't do because its offenive. HAIL TO THE KING BABY!!!
Again, if the store outlets and parents are doing their job, this game falling into young childrens hands shouldn't be an issue. Not many conservative (ideals not political affiliation) people are going to go out on a whim to purchase this game; and if they do and are offended? Well, that's what saving your receipt and returning the game comes in hand. So please, don't be ignorant. If somethings not for you, don't play it and don't start a media frenzy over it. This is why we humans have the power of choice. Because if these people had their way, freedom of expression in games would die.
The Women's Media Center should take note that the girl in this video who works for Gearbox is wearing a shirt that says "Duke Nukem's T*tty City"....maybe these uptight Women's Media Center people should relax a bit. See the world through a more temperate lens.
Not suprised at all how they are pinning this on Video Games. Hey Fox News, say hi to James Bond and Snoop Dog while you are at it.
Fox is the same network that plays Family Guy... A show that once made fun of a molested teenage girl. Double standard, morons.. Fox is the best news network, but they tend to waste time with stories like this every now and then..
Wow... just wow. Seriously, if you're gonna attack one form of media, attack the rest. Like movies and music aren't just as over the top.
@Iamshmee I wouldn't say rap died in the 90's (with the murders of Tupac, Notorious B.I.G. and Eazy E). When you're someone (like you) who doesn't listen to rap music but tries not to come off biased so says that at one point in time there was good rap music, then yeah, what you're hearing on the radio and on MTV, thats not real rap. For an avid listener of all genres of music (except heavy metal and country), I would say rap isn't dead. You're just judging rap music by the mainstream market. Thats just what the record labels have their artists sing and rap because they know that stupid people will buy it, and theres proof of that because these "controlled artists" are selling CDs. But if you hear any one of those artists personal mixtapes, freestyles, pre-signed productions or anything that they created before they were discovered by a label, its so much better than what you're buying at HMV.
Why don't the boycotters go after the mature VIDEOS with twins in school uniforms giving BJs? Not to be sexist but you can't blame the pasty, lonely men who made Duke Nukem Forever for portraying women like that in a video game when women already to that for us. Music videos, mature videos, mature magazines, etc. all have women acting like that by THEIR choice, and now some women are getting angry because we found a way to not have to embarass - and pay - real women for the same acts? Men do it as well, we just have no shame about it.
...woooooow...thnx Fox News for telling us what u Think....it really means A-LOT to us...i mean..now that we know that this game is Sexist...No one is Ganna Buy it...like NO ONE....coz ur opinion Really Matter........i just have one question though.....Why r u guyz Still Even A Chanel ??????
@alekishere Riiiight...yeah Fox News doesn't constantly spout off delusional drivel, no, no that's just manufactured by a conspiracy there is no proof of.Fox News is so prevalent that the chances of anybody not watching at least a few good minutes of their crap is tiny.
"""i wonder how many of the commenters in this thread hating on Fox News has ever watched anything from there except the propaganda put out by George Soros' many media sites? """ Ya, and the funny thing is they think they're empowered by "hating"... None of these people actually read the original story, just ran with the "fox hates games" meme, without actually finding out for themselves. The fact is Media Matters and sorors PAY websites to spin stories from fox and PAYS people to sit in their underwear and mock fox. (they pay people to register as commented on websites and introduce anti-fox memes by posing as multiple commenters)... Its the "manufactured uprising" trick. The actual story everyone is commenting on is actually a fox report about what some FEMINIST organization says. So its not "fox says x", but "feminists are whining that X, and all the media (including fox) report on this whine". The fox report actually features MORE people DEFENDING the game then attacking it. But whatcha gonna do, soros is a master at brainwashing... People just read the gamespot headline and follow the herd.
@anthonycg it's cause good rap was killed back in the early 90's. Rapper's used to be poor and sing hopeful songs, now they just brag about how much money they have and how they can throw it on stripper's a$$es...
You can't please everyone in this world. Still, I am willing to bet that the number of gamers anticipating this game, far outweighs a bunch of whiney middle aged nuns, so the game will always win out. Nyer nyer.
talk about brainwashed....i wonder how many of the commenters in this thread hating on Fox News has ever watched anything from there except the propaganda put out by George Soros' many media sites? i'll bet not one. watch Shephard Smith or Bill O'Reilly & then start hating, but until then it's laughable how many want to "fight the power," but are actually the reason this fantastic country we live in will be an afterthought in 10 years. read a book, please.
i love how people paint 1 reporter as "Fox News" instead of using the reporters name. if it were a person working for the New York Times that wrote this, would you treat that 1 editor as "The New York Times says DNF takes sexism to a new level?" i bet my life that the answer is no.
This depiction of women is really harmful huh? This is Duke Nukem we're talking about. 90% of the people playing it are gonna be guys. But Transformers 2 made 800 million dollars worldwide. And no one takes Michael Bay's case of depicting college girls as porn stars.
@dRuGGeRnaUt, Well you have to also bare in mind, those are not necessarily the same networks....they just happen to be under the 'Fox' umbrella. Fox News Network deals w/ solely covering news (albeit questionably...); whereas Fox as regular network channel is completely different. However, I must admit the irony truly isn't lost on your realization, nonetheless, lol.
Haha, I called it, I called it--I knew some women's group would pop up first in line on Duke! And good 'ol 'trusty' Fox News didn't let me down either! Gotta love the humor of it all.... To be honest anyway, it doesn't really matter to me b/c I can simply just ignore buying the game...anyone can, for that matter. So frankly, this doesn't accomplish much of anything Fox, now does it? (well other than you all tooting your anti-gaming horn again)
Just realized.. -This news is coming from the same network that airs "Family Guy".. lol I love that show, but if you want offensive/sexest family guy has done it 10x more than duke over the years. Im sure if you look it up. the WMC has had issues with family guy too. lol
Just went and looked at WMC's website.. you know they actually track how many men are guests on TV shows VS women?? and then complain that one year 67% of guests were men.. then call that sexist?? WHAT? So they have to PURPOSELY turn down male guests because not enough women are on the show?? THAT IS SEXEST. When will these people learn there are REAL problems in the world, not just the amount of "air time" women are getting in the media. Education, healthcare and employment are equal now, and if they aren't at a business/school, that is an exception(and usually because of one person). It's time men and women work together to realize, they are both EQUALLY getting ****ed by their government.. but as long as we're bickering amongst ourselves, i guess that doesnt matter.
Meh, if it was a game about a chick doing the same thing, it would be viewed of as "empowering", or "girl power". "implied women are prostitutes and strippers" well, yeah, they were prostitutes and strippers... how else would you do that? the strippers are all doctors and scientists? If anything is hurting womens(girls) self image, it is THEIR shows and magazine that promote flawless beauty. Somehow, i don't think these "ladies of the evening" will convince ANY girl that this is how they should act.. I am pretty sure in this day and age, women know that they can't run around imitating things they see in movies and games. if not, there is a MUCH larger problem here than "sexist video games"
@diegomode Agreed. Besides, can't people watch adult movies with girls in "school getups" doing the same exact thing?
The Duke Nuken's crew must be paying for this "Fox's publicity". This is the kind of controversy that increase sales.
Sure, Duke Nukem has always been meant to be taken completely seriously and is not at all a parody of anything.Ugh, why do complete idiots get to be on TV or write articles and get payed ridiculous amounts of money to be completely full of crap?
@GunGriffin said: """About 15 million people still listen and watch Fox.......... Better then last year at the start of 2008 it was 50 million, then by 2009 it was 20 million, now they have only 15 million viewers.""" I googled your interesting information, as it piqued my curiosity. From what I found, apparently, cable in general is losing viewership at incredible speeds (thanks to the internetz). CNN is losing viewership at double the speed that fox is. The only ones who aren't losing at break-neck-speeds are those who had little viewership to begin with (msnbc etc).
About 15 million people still listen and watch Fox.......... Better then last year at the start of 2008 it was 50 million, then by 2009 it was 20 million, now they have only 15 million viewers. Keep pushing hard right FOX and U will lose all viewers......... While even tea Baggers may like the old kill the black man who happens to be our leader ideals......... it starts to get into complete LOLs vill when U claim he caused the earth quake in Japan, and that the crap in the middle east is his fault, and that rapists are his fault......... (That was not a joke, FOX Radio, and FOX late night are realy saying that crap on air!)
If Fox would actually shut up and listen to the amount of hate they get from gamers, maybe it would be nice. And Fox, get a damn brain. If you existed in the 70's... You would find porn. On the Atari.
"depicted women as strippers and prostitutes".... ok, um... so Fox is saying guys would fit the bill better? -_-;
A lot of people in the comments here don't seem to know what the word "sexist" means. Look up the dictionary. You've been fooled by feminism and you're all using feminism's reinterpretation of the word. Examples of the TRUE definition: - I believe men are superrior to women ==> sexist - I believe women are superior to men ==> sexist HOWEVER: Simply disagreeing with or mistreating a person who *happens to be* born a woman/man, is not it and of itself sexist. If I were to use the same definition some of you guys are using, I could say that "COD & crysis are sexist because you kill men" ===> FAIL! Stop using feminist terminology guys, you've been duped. Making fun of a person who happens to possess a gina is not "sexist".
