DS Lite $100 on June 5, DS family sells 48.9 million in US

Venerable handheld gets price drop; Mario games get new red packaging; New Super Mario Bros. sells more than 9.25 million units in US.

Last month, rumors spread that the DS Lite might be being phased out. Today, Nintendo announced that the handheld will continue to be offered on the US market at a discounted price of $99.99. The $30 price drop is effective as of June 5, the day before the pre-Electronic Entertainment Expo press conferences get under way.

"This new price point will introduce Nintendo DS Lite to even more consumers," said Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime of the drop.

The news comes as Nintendo announces new sales milestones in the United States. To date, the DS family of systems has sold more than 48.9 million units domestically, making it--according to Nintendo--the best-selling system in US history. The Kyoto, Japan-based game giant also took the opportunity to announce new American sales figures for its top six DS Mario games, as of the end of April 2011:

New Super Mario Bros.: over 9.25 million units
Mario Kart DS: over 7.40 million units
Super Mario 64 DS: over 4.34 million units
Mario Party DS: over 3.27 million units
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story: over 1.98 million units
Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem!: over 1.01 million units

To commemorate the games' success, Nintendo is changing the box color of the aforementioned sextuple of titles to a bright red. The company also announced that some 31 Mario games have bested 1 million units of sales since 1995, with worldwide unit sales of the Super Mario series topping 262 million.

I'm looking forward to the new Mario titles for the 3DS. Besides, I'm kinda waiting for the Wii to drop down to a hundred dollar bundle like they did with the GameCube.

XanderZane 97 pts

Already have a DS Lite and a 3DS, so I'm all set. I have no plans on buying anymore DS systems in the next 3-4 years. Just waiting for more 3DS games right now. Still have lots, and lots of regular DS games to play.

leeko_link 66 pts

For a guy like me that still had a lot of old GBA and DS games laying around, this is the moment I am waiting for and $100, that's a steal, you can play imports (like Blood of Bahamut & Mother 3), GBA, homebrew, flash games (such as Another World a.k.a. Out of this World), and original games on the device with no prob.

raahsnavj 21 pts

Lesson learned. Next time rumor has Nintendo discontinuing something I'll just ignore it and save $30.

HonorOfGod 53 pts

@HaloPimp978 I can also play GBA games both on GBA and on emulator so yeah. (hint: the second option is free)

BloodMist 28 pts

Now all they need to do is to start dropping the price on the 3DS, because it really needs that price lowered badly.

atopp399 10 pts

They should cut $50 from the 3DS. I'd probably buy one then.

drgribb 7 pts

@crazy_legs87 how did it not break? lol I carried my original ds for a pretty long time as well, but with a broken hinge and nonworking L and R buttons, I finally had to pony up for a ds lite- a decision I don't regret lol.

Wormkid_64 32 pts

Mario is a force to be reckoned with indeed.

theJBlounge 12 pts

@Superzone Yeaaaa I find it weird they're "commemorating" the success of the games but not dropping the price.

Superzone 196 pts

Hope they plan on lowering the price of those Mario games as well.

Agelu 5 pts

Those red lines, as simple as they might be, suit the cases so very well...

nickythenewt21 8 pts

If you don't have a DS, now is the very best time to buy one. All of the best games are already out, so while you're waiting for the big-shot 3DS games to come out, you can play the awesome DS games!

Crazy_Legs87 5 pts

Believe it or not, I stayed with my original DS from 2005. I never bought a DS Light or DSI.

freedomspopular 8 pts

I might finally have to get my first portable.

Ovirew 38 pts

@mjc0961 Well, I was okay with the DS Lite controls, I thought they were very tight and responsive. But I know everyone has different opinions, and at least you've found iterations of the DS that you enjoy. At least we can both agree that the GBA days are in the past.

EPaul 13 pts

Finally my ds lite was falling apart

DarxPhil 6 pts

That's an awesome price, though i already have both a DS Lite and a DSi. I do prefer the PSP a bit more though, as the PSP pushes out more ''hardcore'' titles. I don't care a whole lot for RPG's(though i am playing Pokemon SoulSilver) and puzzle games, but i do love action packed games with great immersion and you can't get that on the DS sadly.

HappyApryl 5 pts

wow...I hope with sales like that, they will release another side scrolling mario on the 3DS....My dream is all stars on the 3DS, with some 3D effects going on, that would be AWESOME..bet it would do a few million in sales...

theJBlounge 12 pts

I've been waiting for the DS Lite price to drop low enough. I've had a PSP over the years but I've really wanted to play some of the games on the DS like Professor Layton, New Super Mario Bros, Phoenix Wright, etc. This might be low enough for an impulse purchase.

tu2pac 18 pts

LOL ... at least they're thinking. If you were on the fence about the new Sony hand held .. this will solve it ... I'm sorry Sony ... I'm sold on this ...

HaloPimp978 90 pts

@HonorOfGod How So? You can play GBA games on this one, so it seems like a good deal to me.

megakick 101 pts

I think the psp go is too much it should be free.

Nick_2266 9 pts

so there's gonna be a dip in sales for the next few days...

JoePiervincenti 5 pts

$99 is still too much? if you think that's too much for the incredible selection of games that system has and still has GBA compatible then you'll never be happy with anything!

Flint247 66 pts

I have 4 of those 6 games. Cool that the DS lite is going to be $100. I still remember when I got my white DS Lite in June 2006. Great system. Go Nintendo!

servb0ts 45 pts

I have my DSLite an Love it, still enjoying my GBA Castlevania Aria of Sorrows and MY DS Castlevania Dawn of Sorrows.

kindredmachine 12 pts

Wow, gotta hand it to Nintendo. Their games sell like hotcakes. Though I'm a 360 fan, I can't wait to see their new system at E3.

mjc0961 109 pts

@Ovirew: Agreed. The GBA is dead, and the DS Lite is bad at playing GBA games anyway. In fact, it's bad at playing DS games too thanks to its awful mushy d-pad and buttons. If I want to play GBA games, I'll play them on my GBA SP, and if I want to play DS games, I'll play them on my DSi or 3DS, all of which have responsive, clicky buttons. None of that DS Lite mushy nonsense for me.

Ovirew 38 pts

@zzmaro Give it up already, the GBA is ancient history.

zzamaro 151 pts

@iandizion713 Who cares about that? The DS Lite is the one that matters the most because it's the one that play gb titles. Any DSi revision sucks.

StJimmy15 31 pts

Yeah, I need a new Lite after I sold my DSi for the 3DS... I can't stand how the original games look on it.

ekalbtwin 8 pts

I am glad that Nintendo gave traditional 2d side scrolling a go this gen on both of their systems and it paid off for em, both mario games on the ds and wii are great and Donkey Kong Country Returns was icing on the cake. 9.25 million games sold is a massive success that few games come anywhere near.

JasPlun 13 pts

@monson21502 not everybody wants a 3DS or to pay 249 bucks for a handheld that has no real game list to choose from yet. Maybe in a few months or so it will be worth it to some to get a 3DS.

JasPlun 13 pts

Good news for me,I have been wanting to buy another for me so I will leave my wife's DS alone LOL.

Tony-Baxter 5 pts

I just love how the games arent getting a lower price but "New packaging " What's the point in that?

VirtualTofu 25 pts

So, only 5 days left to pay $30 more than you really need to!

monson21502 8 pts

about 2 years too late... who is gonna pay 100 bucks for a ds lite now when they can get a 3ds or dsi????

tman978 6 pts

Yes, drop the price on the games. I wanna rebuy Super Mario 64 DS but its still high

GunBladeHero 45 pts

Top 3 Nintendo franchises are: 1- Mario 2- Pokemon 3- Zelda All of them are really good franchises, but there's many great third-party franchises on Nintendo's consoles as well.

mariostar0001 5 pts

@sacatash The original DS could also play GBA games, but it's not sold new any more. @mario-nin-freak They haven't confirmed it, no, it's merely been hinted at.

mariostar0001 5 pts

Too bad I already have three of those games, and my brother has two more. The red box sounds pretty unique at least. At least there's still the chance my brother will be getting Mario Vs. DK 4, that would be one red box. Interesting to see that both Mario Vs. DK and Mario & Luigi got their second DS title in this group versus their first one (Mario Vs. DK: March of the Minis and Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time).

WllDan7 6 pts

@ItsEvolution Price drops occur when the game stops selling well. Mario kart ds has pretty much been in the NPD sells top 20 since it came out (almost 6 years ago). So unless it drops to 50 in the charts they will still charge that.

Spacerac 25 pts

$30 bucks?! Seems like it should be more like $50.

rubber-chicken 5 pts

Will any of these games get a price drop too, or just the DS Lite gets a price drop?

ItsEvolution 9 pts

Okay, now lower the price of all of those Mario games to $19.99. The fact that Mario Kart is still $34.99 is just plain wrong.

pokecharm 72 pts

curiousier and curiousier I say...I was never that jazzed about the DS line, I have a PSP, I can only afford so many portable systems, but now with the 3DS, I'm more tempted than ever. Hopefully this'll help Nintendo corner this quarter's profits ;)

Toplinkar 7 pts

Mario really sells a lot. Wonder If i have missed a lot by not playing any of his games.
