Ubisoft giving away racing title's 11 multiplayer modes to all players due to printing error on codes included with new copies of game.
It's not unusual for cars left sitting for too long to experience some problems when they're finally started back up. Ubisoft is experiencing that firsthand today, as the return of the Driver franchise with Driver: San Francisco has been marred by a logistical problem.
After problems with some of the onetime codes included in new copies of Driver to unlock the game's multiplayer modes, Ubisoft today announced that it will do away with the codes for the game entirely and allow all players to unlock the extra content for free.
"Due to a printing error on the insert of some copies of Driver: San Francisco in North America, Ubisoft has elected to provide the Driver Uplay Passport content for free," Ubisoft said in a statement. "Although this problem does not affect players outside of North America, we have decided to mirror this offer worldwide in order to be fair to all our players."
Players will still need to download an unlock key to get at the content. To do so, they can select "Start my 2-day free trial" or "Purchase Uplay passport" from the game's Uplay passport menu. Either choice will permanently unlock the game's 11 multiplayer modes and film director feature on consoles.
Driver: San Francisco is a throwback to previous installments in the franchise, featuring a matchup between original protagonist John Tanner and Driver 2 antagonist Charles Jericho. In terms of plot, Tanner, a hard-boiled detective behind the wheel of a 1970s-era Shelby GT500, is on the hunt for Jericho, and the two engage in vehicular duels on the streets of the titular hilly California city.
The game includes more than 100 licensed vehicles, all of which are subject to damage. It also features a supernatural element as Tanner is pursuing his mark from the confines of a coma. Tanner's medical condition impacts gameplay, as players are able to pause time to hop to a new vehicle on the fly, as well as get a bird's-eye view of the city to jump to various locations.

Online passes are a frigging joke, an insult and injury to gamers! Get rid of all of them...? They are the work of the devil, THE DEVIL I tell thee!
lol. Ubisoft got lucky with this mistake. Their DRM and no resell policies have me avoiding their games like the plague.
And then once that's over it'll be back at it's original price, game companies can't pass up more money.
so basically Ubi cant even attempt to nickle n dime us to death properly. Not that its a bad thing for us though.
good to see that they removed it shouldent be there in the first place anyway but i already lost my faith in ubisoft a long time ago when those aggresive dmr's started i love assasins creed but apart from that one i refuse to buy any new games or follow ups in other series when they come from ubisoft
Wait, the PC version is being released later? I hope this isn't one of Ubisofts stupid anti-piracy tricks again and that they're actually busy fine-tuning the game for the PC.
Despite the fact that they turned Tanner into a genie, Jericho into a psychopath and that other dude into Kanye West, I will buy this when the price drops. The cliffhanger in Driver 3 was just too annoying lol.
Another step in the right direction, but it is STILL something that shouldn't have been there in the first place. Now just get rid of the PC DRM completely and your customer treatment will be back up to the standard everyone else has. I wish these printing errors happened more often...

why does ubisoft even try? every time they try to implement an always on drm, there are always problems and end up getting rid of the drm, now it seems like the same thing is happening to their online passes
@Frame_Dragger Hey, someone has to complain for all us gamers :). I'm not picking on Ubisoft I'm sending a message to all game companies that require a "code" to access the full game which we paid for. I will return the game and demand my money back from the store I purchased it from. Let the store deal with the company and maybe they will put an end to this code nonsense. Imagine buying anything that requires you to inout a "code" for it to work and then the code doesn't.. You have every right to return it since it doesn't work. Trust me, the store doesn't want the headache of dealing with all the returns and the companies don't want to have to refund the money the stores shelled out for their products..
Too late, i already returned the game to best buy and informed them that the game is broken due to a faulty password that will not let me access the full game which I paid for.. This is why this code nonsense is not a good idea for us gamers..
Another instance of a DRM accident preventing players out of their legitimately purchased games. No sympathy from me, Ubisoft. An error printing key-codes is as criminal a mistake as having authentication software that sometimes bars users from use even when using a correct passkey, or kicks you from the game if only a single data packet is missed in the always-on DRM.
@jennysalala - I think what it actually shows is common sense. It would have been massively expensive, time-intensive, and inconvenient to their customers to try and fix this in any other way than to make it free to everyone. It was an easy decision for them to just make it free because they didn't really have any other practical choice.
The only mistake Ubi made in my opinion is to make the code a 'scratch off code'. I know from experience this can lead to heartache......
It has multiplayer as standard. The online pass just allowed you to lock 11 extra modes. Its pretty much in line with that everyone else inc Sony are doing so don't see any reason to give Ubisoft a hard time.

Driver SF has the most fun online modes of ANY game I have played this year so this can only be good news. The most pleasant surprise of the gaming year.....
Just goes to show how much of a cash grab online passes actually are... they didn't even try to push these online passes after this "mistake", they just decided "oh well, let's make it free... we would've only made a few million off it anyway".
