I'm really happy to hear some news of it. Thought it definitely took much longer than I wished. But no doubt we all have high hopes for this continuation.
Ragnar Tørnquist's new studio, Red Thread Games, will continue the story of The Longest Journey with the upcoming game.
Fans of acclaimed adventure titles The Longest Journey and Dreamfall will be pleased to know that series creator Ragnar Tornquist will be returning to his adventure game-creating roots.
The new title will be called Dreamfall Chapters and will be created by Tornquist's new studio Red Thread Games for the PC and Mac. According to an interview from website Rock, Paper Shotgun, the game will be continuing the story that started from PC title The Longest Journey and Dreamfall.
Tornquist, who most recently was the director for MMO The Secret World, said that the team will be using Kickstarter to get funds to develop Dreamfall Chapters; so far it has received a grant from the Norwegian Film Institute. Concerning The Secret World, he said he will still remain as creative director for the MMO.
The PC adventure title The Longest Journey was praised for its story, graphics, and puzzles. Its sequel, Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, was also praised for its sci-fi story and production values for graphics and music.
Man, it always bothered me that they let this series go. The Longest Journey was golden, and Dreamfall's ending, was left wide open. I really hope they pick it up again.
I never understood why TLJ game series was put on hold, in order to develop Age Of Conan & The Secret World. But probably from a business perspective it made sense to shift towards MMOs. Hope they can pull it off, as funding the project will definitely affect the creative process and not in a good way.
This will be such a bad game, there is no money for this project and the guy in charge, Ragnar, just wasted 50 million dollars on his last game - the secret world. At best this will be another 3 or 5/10 Ragnar game like casper and dragonheart but my guess is vaporware.
I hardly play any adventure games, but this series was a gem. Wtf took them so long to get the next chapter.
Since Funcom are no longer really involved with this project I suppose I can suspend my Secret World subscription and syphon it Red Thread Games' way. Probably come out same time as Episode VII? : )
I'm sorry fan boys. Yes it was a unique game that had deep story to it and such but it was also a snooz fest at times.
Man I was waiting so long for this one.
(I even e-mailed FUNCON 2 years ago asking about it)
Kind of surprised on this one. I know the game is kind of a cult hit, picked it up for that reason, though I havent played it yet. But since the last release was on the original xbox I didnt see this coming.
Heaven just got bestowed upon us by Ragnar and this team.
To anyone who hasnt played TLJ and Dreamfall, please go do so. The gameplays are weak (especially for DF) but in turns you will get to experience one of the best narratives ever told in video games, if not in any kind of entertainment.
Awesomee. Dreamfall, had one of the best stories. It was EPIC. Finally, waited for too long for the next episode of the series:D
Great news but rather overdue. I'm very glad that the planned MMO sequel was a bust and as much as I like The Old Republic I hope it puts an end to that fad of designers wanting to follow up single player games with MMOs.
Just noticed that TLJ and Dreamfall are up on GOG. Seem a tad over priced so I guess I'll wait for a sale.
Wow. This was probably the worst game I've played. Complete with long periods of doing nothing, lame voice acting, and insane load times exacerbated by the need for 8 FRIGGIN DISCS!
It's news like this that make me glad I'm not a game reviewer.
@Tekcor To each their own. The Longest Journey is considered one of the best adventure games by many, and yes it is a long game (name kind of fits it).
@Stiler I know it's true, I just find it hard to believe. My brother-in-law is an RPG nut. Pretty much all he plays. All the time. Even he found this game mind-numbingly boring.
This is such good news, wow just... I can't wait.
Dreamfall is easily one of my all time favorite games.
Oh, I've been waiting for a new "The Longest Journey series" sequel for a long, long time. The Longest Journey is a masterpiece, easily in my "top 10 adventure games list" - and I must say "adventure" is of my three favorites genres (side-by-side with RPGs and turn-based strategy games). Dreamfall was also very good, an one of a kind game. I'd prefer a traditional full length games, but if Tornquist believes episodic format is the way to go, well, ok, it's The Longest Journey/Dreamfall after all!
I was kind of avoiding Kickstater lately, at least until I got a few of the games I backed, but, what the heck, one who backs seven games will have no problem in backing eight.
I haven't commented on any news story in GameSpot for months, but Ho...ly...Crap. I've held off playing DreamFall for years so I don't have to be tortured for years, thinking about what would be next without any planned sequels. I'm not articulate enough to express how freaking amazing this is. I'll just have to read below and see.
this week, I also found out corpse party: book of shadows will be released in english. I guess miracles do exist.
I don't understand why more developers launch more kickstarter projects on these long awaited sequels. they would be funded instantly.
Now this is extremely exciting!
Both of these games just blew me away and go down as some of my favorite of all time.
This'll be the first Kickstarter project I fund. =)
Now if only Shenmue III would do the same... ¬_¬
