As I continue to ignore any kind of gaming-equivalent-of-nationist whining on all forums across the netscape, I should really ask: What's the overarching goal making every DQ Nintendo exclusive? One time on some board, I said "inane conspiracy of questionable purpose" and I won't rest until I copy/paste this into random places concerning modern-day DQ on every inch of the internet... Or just scribble it on some bathroom wall. :D
Franchise creator Yuji Horii says an announcement concerning Wii installment in long-running RPG series due in 2011; game "on the last parts" of development.
Considering the multimillion-unit success of Dragon Quest IX for the DS, Square Enix has been surprisingly quiet about its follow-up, Dragon Quest X. Beyond announcing the game at the tail end of 2008, Square Enix has offered little indication as to what gamers can expect from the title, aside from its being in development for the Wii.
While it doesn't appear that Square Enix's radio silence on the subject will end anytime soon, the publisher has at least said that it plans on opening up about the game this year. Speaking to Go Nintendo, Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii said that he expects to have an announcement for the game ready to go by the end of the year.
"All we can say is that development is going well and we're on the last parts of the game," Horii said. "We can't really share much else at this point, but by the end of this year we should be able to announce something regarding it."
Horii also offered a tease on what gamers can expect from the title, saying that it is being built in the same vein as Dragon Quest VIII.
"Something else we hear is that players want a new Dragon Quest that follows the same system of Dragon Quest VIII, so that's something else we're taking into consideration while in development for a Dragon Quest on Wii," he said.
DQVIII was notable for being the first installment in the franchise released for the PlayStation 2, as well as the first to be rendered in full 3D. The plot saw gamers facing off against an evil wizard, who stole a magic scepter and cursed an entire castle. As the lone unaffected resident of the castle, players set out with a portly companion (the king) and the princess to track the wizard down, reclaim the scepter, and break the curse.

Look at all the "thumbs down" marks given by all the Wii fanboys. I also like how people justify their claims that HD JRPGs are garbage because of FFXIII. Did any of you even bother playing Tales of Vesperia or Lost Odyssey? Keep in mind, DQ is Enix's baby and not Square's. DQVIII was an amazing game, and definitely one of the greatest PS2 RPGs of all time. Fans deserve a better-looking sequel that isn't stuck with last-gen graphics. They already dumbed them down from the PS2 to the DS with IX. Come on. Did Nintendo strike some sort of deal with Enix, the same way they did with Capcom on the RE games for the Cube?
Think this game will get a ps3 port as the ps3 is selling higher than the Wii on a weekly basis in Japan. / Nintendo agreed to publish DQ games to the DS games for an exclusive Wii game. Interesting to see this as Zelda in Japan is no longer popular
I'm just going to take this time to say that Dragon Quest VIII is one of the best and most time consuming games I have ever played. I actually consider it the best game for PS2. Dragon Quest X should be badass.
Please, please, please let it have Classic Controller support... I think it is better that it is on the Wii. If it was on the PS3 or Xbox they would care more about how it looks than how it plays. Look at the movie that was Final Fantasy XIII. I definitely don't want that experience in a Dragon Quest game.
7 wasw amazing on ps1 and 8 was even better on ps2, dang please release the next one on ps3!! we need more jrpgs on the ps3!! GOOD JRPGS!
@GolgoThirteen I hope Not...Besides I do remember DQX being announced a long time ago and this article sounds pretty believable
DQVIII was my fav. If it's going to resemble that game then this new one will become part of my library.
Anyway, isn't the headline a little bit misleading? He said he would announce something the the end of the year that doesn't mean the game will come out by then.
Why waist a Dragon Quest on the Wii? Just goes to show you that Japanese developers are far behind. All the japanese rpgs (besides FFXIII) that came out on 360 and PS3 look like PS2/Wii games, and they play like them too.
@alex33x: You obviously don't know what a hardcore gamer is. Let me put it this way. You can play stuff like Mass Effect, Gears of War, God of War, Dragon Age, Call of Duty and Halo, but if you only play for about 10 hours a week you are still only a casual gamer regardless becuase you don't commit a lot of your time to gaming. But if I played my Wii for, say 50 hours a week, regardless of what I play (even in if's something such as Just Dance), I'd be a hardcore gamer becuase I've commited a lot of my time to gaming. What I'm saying (I'll repeate for your peanut-sized brain) is that playing certain games doesn't make you hardcore. Commiting a lot of your spare time to games, and buying and playing ALL types of games, makes you hardcore. Basically being a nerd and having next-to-no social life makes you a hardcore gamer. People like you are the reason so many others are losing faith in the industry. P.S. I own all the consoles this gen (and 20 consoles in total), and I own Mass Effect, so I can have honest opinions. Graphics are unimportant.
With all due respect to Dragon Quest IX, it was DQVIII that introduced me to this legendary series and really took me by surprise, providing one of the most enjoyable and charming RPG experiences I've ever beheld. If DQX is truly following in VIII's footsteps, this is as great of news I've heard in a very long time. As long as it has taken Square-Enix to even mention ANYTHING regarding this game, I'm still looking forward to this title as much as ANY video game right now. Now I just hope the game will finally be worth the wait and silence once it does hit the Wii...
widdowson91 go look a the graphics on Mass Effect then come back and tell me, you dont want them. The Wii is a family console, for the weekend gamer, the 360 ad PS3 are for the hardcore gamers.
Why are so many people butthurt that Dragon Quest X is for the Wii and not for the XBox 360 and PlayStation 3? Get over it. You guys get RPG's all the time - like Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Lost Odyssey and Demon Souls. Wii owners constantly get screwed over RPG releases, most Wii RPG's don't even get releases outside of Japan. If you don't own a Wii don't complain when a game you want for it is released. Its your own fault you can't play it if you don't want to buy a Wii. Anyway what would Dragon Quest X for the XBox 360/PlayStation 3 offer that it can't on the Wii? Better graphics... oh yeah, because I forgot that graphics are important. Is it any wander so many gamers regard this generation to be one of the worst ever.
I'm still playing DQIV and haven't even started DQV or DQVI yet. I'm almost done with DQIv though. Going to be a long time before I start DQX. I love these games, I just don't have the long hours to play through them quickly. I'm glad they are finally finishing DQX though. I wish they would make one that was on all 3 next-gen systems.
hope the story rise up more than DQ IX. the only lacking part of that game. it'd be 10/10 for me if the story isn't so cliche and bland
It's hard to believe though. In DQ history, there've never been 2 DQ games ( main series) in a two-years period and the creator of DQ is known to take times to finish his game at perfection. Moreover, who is making this game anyway? The article didn't state the studio name at all and I think Level5 is already have too many projects on their hand at the moment.
As an April Fools joke, there is nothing "prank-y" or funny about this at all. That said, I choose to believe in Gamespot's good judgement in not resorting to this as a lame and cheap joke, and just go with this being a real news story... it sounds fishy, though.
As long as this is on a console (where DQ belongs) and not some crappy handheld (any handheld) I will be happy.
While I love Dragon Quest, especially VIII, I am worried about X being on the Wii. While I think they will bring us a quality story and characters, I'm afraid being on the Wii they will be adding a bunch of gimmicky nunchuck mini games and controls that cause me to loose interest in most Wii games.
at last! a great game for wii. now i can use my wii again. i m sure this game stick to the classic formula, because it is on wii and not ps/xbox.
I absolutely loved DQVIII. If this comes out on the Wii like they say it will, I may have to abandon my Steam games list and hog my husband's Wii for awhile...
Japan mostly buys and enjoys Dragon Quest. With the earthquake, I doubt it will even sell a million copies
Crossing my fingers that one of those announcements will say Level 5 is leading the actual developement. :(
That means there won't be an English version until 2012 at the earliest. At least there's something to look forward to on the Wii.
HD and 3D >_> PD:japanese developers sucks now t_t jRPGs are dead until Shin Megami Tensei for PS3/360. wii? =D
No doubt DQ Vlll was the best RPG on the PS2 next to FFX. I really hope that they will make another one for the PS3.
