Double Fine crafting Sesame Street Kinect game

By Eddie Makuch

Brutal Legend developer inks deal with Warner Bros. to develop motion-controlled game based on popular children’s television show.

Double Fine has found the way to Sesame Street, and it's through a partnership with Warner Brothers. The Tim Schafer-led studio behind Psychonauts, Brutal Legend, Costume Quest, and the recent Stacking is making a Kinect title based in the Sesame Street universe.

Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster will debut on the Xbox 360 for Microsoft's Kinect during fall 2011. Players will join famous Sesame Street characters Elmo, Cookie Monster, and others as they explore an interactive story. Players will encounter and befriend monsters, solve problems, and learn "key life skills" throughout their adventures.

"Sesame Street had a profound effect on me, and many members of the Double Fine team, when we were children. So did video games," Double Fine CEO Schafer said. "Now many of us are parents and we want to share with our kids the great experiences we had, but also the completely new ones made possible by cutting-edge technology like Kinect for Xbox 360. So it's a labor of love on many levels."

For more on Double Fine's latest effort, check out GameSpot's review of Stacking.

Since this is going to be made by Double Fine, I was looking for the bit where it said "And Big Bird will be played by Cee Lo Green in his grammy outfit"

Thank god that Disney did not get their hands on this like they did with the muppets that was so much better then the crap Disney had they bought em out and then killed it because it was eating away at their market shares........ I think WB should buy it all from Disney and reboot it, then it would be back to it's formor glory, much like what they are doing with their Cartoon Network channel and Loony Toons, they are coming back baby! Real non CGI animated Loony Toons! Only on cartoon network, and BTW: in HD if U have it!

I have absolutely no idea how this will turn out, but I wish Shafer and Double Fine all the best. :)

Cookie Monster is still so awesome! :)

As an aside, can't wait to see what they can do with the whole "Near...........FAAAAAAAR" bit. If I'd had this as a kid, I would have loved it. I couldn't enough of Sesame Street. See also: "Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr-ring"

Makes sense. Interactive games have become very significant in the kids sector, starting with the Leapfrog stuff. The Kinect is extremely user-friendly, so I see it being a homerun.

@TheTrueMagusX1 My initial comment was that Kinect was getting more junk. I'm not a kid. I think kids this age (preschoolers) are better off not being in front of a TV. I'm not saying kids shouldn't play games ever. You assume too much.

pszone 16 pts

not ganna sell belive me because some games like that didnt sell worldwide to its fail but bring out real keict games for fans

Personally, I am more interested in how Double Fine would portray the Sesame Street IP than Double Fine making a kid-friendly game. Having a title like "Once Upon A Monster" suggests that Double Fine's version of Sesame Street may not be entirely in the spirit of Sesame Street - especially that bit about "key-life skills" and the Kinect being involved. ;) Tim Schafer may just end up changing the way Sesame Street is looked at - for better or worse. I can't help but feel that Double Fine is going to cause Warner Bros. to regret its investment. (Tim Schafer did say something about "spending other people's money" first after all.) P.S. The interview video is unfortunately broken now. That statement was made at the end of the video.

oh yes and brutal legend 2 would be preferable ... ... ...

oh dear, well i suppose in these hard times even the best studios need to tide over their finances...

Gotta love the comments from people on here saying young kids should not be playing games or watching TV. Should we be reading to them every waking hour of their lives? Get a clue, no one suggested sticking a child in front of a this game and abandoning them. Besides, chances are if you're posting on this web site you probably played games as a kid. Where would your hobby be today if no one allowed you to watch TV or play videogames? Yes, reading to your child is important, but saying no TV and no videogames is a little overboard, and most likely the type of comment you'd expect from someone who doesn't have kids.

Wow I do not like the direction the Microsoft is going with the Xbox. Though if I had a Kinect I would rent it just to see how ridiculous it is.

Evz0rz 22 pts

The kid inside of me is seriously excited for this! :D

wis3boi 6 pts

I wanna play as Cookie Monster....I mean...Veggie Monster >_>

Double Fine makes really great games but i am going to have to pass due to the fact that i stopped watching Sesame Street 20+ years ago and i don't have Kinect, oh and i would rather have Brutal Legend 2

imbusydoctorwho 5 pts

You are very lucky people who have a Kinect.

Megavideogamer 81 pts

A seame street game on the xbox 360? I am surprised that they didn't already make one for the Nintendo wii. This game is brought to you by the letter X and the numbers 3, and 6, and 0?

XboxGuy1537 73 pts

Hey, if I get to play as Cookie Monster and the gang, count me in!

TheTrueMagusX1 5 pts

@Indyskater I donot even know how that is relevant to the argument. You are now bringing up how bad our schools are, but yet your initial arguments were about how this game is going to be terrible and its not targeted towards you. I also find it ironic that you keep saying kids should not be infront of the tv but yet you are a gamer yourself.

Killer2401 5 pts

Cookie Monster for SNL? I'd play that game...

Nice to see some games on the Xbox 360 that all family members can play. A few, once in a while, is cool. And Double Fine is doing it, I love Costume Quest.

jansong1 5 pts

Come on kinect, make some games for ME please, you know, a lil action & inovation sprinkled with a modern graphic or 2, don't just give the crown to MOVE. Really. Let's step up the game

warhawk-geeby 108 pts

Yep. That's it.. Done and dusted.. The Xbox360 has stopped walking and is now running down the 'family console' route. Sad times..

Reilly86 5 pts

Wow...this is just the kind of game I got the Kinect for. Who needs Star Wars and Gears of Wars Kinect games when I can play as Elmo or Big Bird. I just hope that this is a one off game and not a sign of things to come.

kintama88 7 pts

anything with cookie monster and ernie is just awesome

xxLordDavidxx 5 pts

I'm still waiting on Psychonauts 2 personally. The cliff-hanger at the end of the first game has bugged me for ages.

MetalZombieII 5 pts

Double Fine rocks and I am sure this will be an awesome kids game. I love Schafer and his team and knowing that they are making this game makes me wish I was a child again. However since I am not a child, I will have to get this for my nieces and sneak in a little time showing them how to play it ;)

steelmouth 32 pts

Sesame Street? Really? Damn Kinect is going down the drain, at this rate even if it gets a "Hardcore" game it may not be teenage cool to be seen playing it

jinilthedon 5 pts

Wow what hardcore games for kinect now, really sad!!

NoDzombie 12 pts

Double Fine have released some awesome games in the past few years, they are at the top of their game right now, so this may be a kids game, but im sure, when it arrives it will be one of the best kids games available

irwin88 5 pts

hey why not make (Barney and Friends kinect) lol...

Wariokas 5 pts

I like it. Not for myself, but for the children this can be great.

Karratti 5 pts

C'mon now. You all can act tough and whatever, but there's plenty of us who grew up on the Street. Double Fine has made some really interesting properties in the past few years, and this might turn out alright. I may be a little old to be the target audience, but even I can appreciate this with a little nostalgia.

Flint247 71 pts

As always, people bash games geared for everyone/younger audience and rejoice when a bloody, mature game comes out.

razgriz_101 5 pts

i didnt see thid coming but for once it could be a really good game based on the IP for what its aiming aat. And Cookie Monster>>>Master Chief :P

travisstaggs 6 pts

Double Fine are awesome, but really? I didn't see this coming at all.

mariokart64fan 5 pts

WOW AND people criticized wiis line up maybe its time to look in the mirror when it comes to motion , games wii has the most good ones out , and all kenict is riding on is casual /mini game based or some dance/fitness game or an awful movie tie in ,eh , just quit while ur a head ms thats what i say and work on getting 720 out the door cause ur kenict games arent lookin so hot

Alex_09 5 pts

As long as Jack Black's not in it I'm sure it will be funny.
