lmao every time I see that face I remember back to Daikatana and that famous tagline that he will make us all his b***h xD
id Software cofounder and designer of famous shooters John Romero keen on building new genre project, says it is not Daikatana 2.
id Software cofounder and instrumental designer on seminal shooters Doom, Quake, and Wolfenstein 3D John Romero has plans for an "old school" first-person shooter, the developer has revealed.
Responding to a Twitter question of "Have you given up on making a good old school FPS?" Romero responded, "Definitely not. I have plans…"
"There will be no [Daikatana 2]! he said.
Romero has had a busy career since leaving id Software in 1996. Over the years that followed, the developer held high-level positions at Midway, Slipgate Ironworks, Gazillion Entertainment, Monkeystone Games, and Ion Storm. Romero currently serves as CEO and cofounder of Loot Drop, a San Bruno, California- based developer specializing in social and mobile games.
[CORRECTION] An earlier version of this story reported that Romero worked at Ion Games. GameSpot regrets the error.
i played the "dreaded" daikatana back in the day and despite what all the negative nancy's say, it wasn't a total wreck. It just had big boots to fill, and well....that's the past. Judge John by his greatest hits. Without them, i doubt we would have played half the games we have in the last 10-15 years. Bring it on John, can't wait.
Let's just hope 90% of the budget will not be used to buy a pretty but uncomfortable office that makes working impossible again.
1st Brian Fargo wants to make Wastland 2, now John Romero wants to make a new shooter. Nice, "old school" is coming back to bring something different, i hope.
I have played most of the realistic shooters they are ok but i still prefer the classical school hands down... i do not like to be a tank and i don't like health to be auto-generated just lame ...and i like to focus on skill when death matching ...not aiming down the sight ... but i am feeling that the two schools are blending together ... look at borderlands for example ! where do u place that?
He should make Daikatana 2. Just because the first one was believed to be horrible (never played it so I don't know), it doesn't mean a sequel would be just as bad. I'd be very intrested in it actually.
yeah like the game Rage, as Caldrin has said below, we expect and are used to so much more now, back when doom was released the hardware wasn't as good and it hadn't been done really before. Doom is the Great grandfather of most fps today, there is one exception however, the Xbox original version (Also on pc) was superb and different keeping the story of doom later to star the Rock wrestler in a film adaptation. I look forward to seeing the next installment.
The problem is that old school fps games are actually pretty shallow and get boring fast as it usually consisted of killing wave after wave after wave or enemies that looked the same. Back in the day we loved them as they where new and no one had done anything like it before... Now we have fps games with awesome AI and great story lines going back to the old school style of FPS just wont work just look what happened to Duke Nukem, What we need is somthing new not old..
@moremoneythanu That's quite an imagination you have there. However, here is the reality: 1) You are a very lonely person 2) You have no friends 3) No one now, in the past, or in the future will ever think of you even in passing, or care even the tiniest notion in a dream about what you think 4) It's good that you will always be alone. I shudder to think what an abusive spouse or parent you would be 5) A Law should be passed forbidding you specifically to ever reproduce, due to the threat to the very existence of the species that it would cause. 6) If you look up the definition of douchebag in the dictionary, there is your name and address after the pronunciation 7) Your parents should be imprisoned for ever having sex
"for 'old school' FPS" thats great and all but that is what Serious Sam and game like Pain Killer are for. I would rather see his brains and tallent go to a something BIGGER. Old School FPS games are great and all... but they are budget or XBLA/PSN games only. I mean I still play doom 2 and Duke 3d. and love the new serious sam... so nothing agianst old school FPS... but they are old school. It could be like Shadow Complex, wich was old school 2d side scroller, but one of the BEST games of the year!!! also a budget title.
Yeaaaaaaaaaaaa. I hope the new game will be good as Doom and other masterpieces. This videogame developer deserve respect
Hell yeah man, give us some new IP Shooter please!! Posssibly a new franchise to dominate the market and swoop the world like Quake and Doom! YOU CAN DO IT!
I'm looking forward to some old school FPS action. I'm very burnt out on "hyper-realistic" military shooters. Games are about escaping reality; NOT trying to half-ass imitate it.
Daikatana 2!!! Did someone say Daikatana 2? Oh right, it wouldn't be. :( I'm actually looking forward to the old school FPS thou, I wanted to follow the news of Romero back in the 90s when he did make Daikatana, I think this is my chance to follow religiously to see what happens. This article is a good start. :)
I'm not sure old school shooters really work these days. I see no reason why not, but after playing games like Hard Reset and Painkiller and Serious Sam, I realise just how painfully shallow they are compared to modern games. I even prefer playing the original Doom to those games. I enjoyed Doom 3 because apart from the obvious good graphics and fantastic controls and weapons, the pacing was just right, which lent itself to the already great atmosphere, and there WAS a light story. Hard Reset just couldn't keep up.
It's easy to make fun of Romero because, frankly, he brings a lot of it on himself. Anyone who is interested in a deeper perspective of what went on at id software, I highly recommend "Masters of Doom" by David Kushner. Really well written book that may change some of your opinions of Romero and Carmack.
Everyone has a bad day...except Daikatana turned out to be one hell of a train wreck that came very close to killing John Romero's name as a games creator. However, besides that I am willing to forgive him for his huge mistake with the games he has made prior to that (Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake) and give him the benefit of the doubt.
Didn't we get burned bad enough by Daikatana to know not to give this guy another chance to suck our souls out through our rectums again...
