3DS port of Wii original coming to America and Europe on May 24.
Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D will launch on May 24 in North America and Europe, Nintendo has announced.
The 3DS title is a port of the Wii game, which was released in 2010. Pilotwings Resort developer Monster Games is handling the port, as opposed to original developer Retro Games.
The game was announced via a Nintendo Direct event in February, where Nintendo also unveiled 3DS RPG Mario & Luigi: Dream Team.
DKC:R was a good game, but Nintendo and Retro had over 2.5 years to do a completely new game. Not worth the full price of admission in my opinion. I don't want to see a series milked and a new one year after year. This is evident with the way shooters are now plus the Mega man formula from the NES days, they lost interest with each new game as they were becoming stale. Not bad games, but no innovations. That or revive some other franchises. Not to beat a dead horse, but EarthBound nor the other two games in the Mother series have been released yet (not holding my breath) and what about Star Tropics? Imagine a new Star Tropics in the vein of Uncharted. That would work, people will cry rip-off, but Star Tropics did archaeological puzzle like Zelda games way before, lol. Variety is what keeps games fresh, both innovating in a series and giving them a break every now and then. With their current practice of over-saturating the market with Mario, Zelda, Kirby, etc. It was nice to play a new Pilotwings game in 2011, would be nice to have a new Star Fox, F-Zero, Advance Wars game. I like their main series, but it gets kinda dull playing the same games over and over. Would like to see some variety in the line up. Sorry for the novel, but just my 2 cents.
@EarthBounder89 Retro isn't making the port; Retro is working on a completely new Wii U title which will be announced around E3. Monster Games is making the 3DS port.
Why? This game isn't even due for a remake, if nintendo wanted to make this style of donkey kong game for 3DS they should have made a whole new game. It would sell SO much better.
@KJsmashdude Nintendo always released a Donkey Kong Land on their Handhelds which was basically just Donkey Kong Country games.
Donkey Kong Country on the SNES then Donkey Kong Land on the Gameboy.
Donkey Kong Country 2 on the SNES then Donkey Kong Land II on the Gameboy.
Donkey Kong Country 3 on the SNES then Donkey Kong Land III on the Gameboy.
Donkey Kong Country Returns on the Wii then Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D on the 3DS.
@KJsmashdude Yeah because nobody bought Zelda Ocarina Of Time for 3DS...
Screw the 3DS, bring these titles to the Wii U, C'mon man... Ocarina of time is one of your best games ever and you port it to the fucking 3DS? you guys are stupid...
@jameson425 Sure. Why port it to a system with a large user base that is selling well when you could port it to a system that nobody cares about. Makes sense.
@Hayhlee @jameson425 Go play with your little Gameboy I want to see a badass link on a 60 inch screen not a 4 inch screen, you make no sense of course the 3DS is doing better and has a bigger user base it has been out over 2 years so no shit it's doing better than a system that just came out 6 months ago... You got anymore brain busters
Wonder if this one will be as hard as the Wii version. I like a challenge but that game was just brutal.
@Alex4789123 I heard some of the Wii controls could be problematic at times but the 3DS probably shouldn't have those kinds of things. Although the 3DS DOES have full motion controls in it, but there's also way more buttons than on a Wiimote. We'll just have to see.
Its a port of the Wii version so exactly the same.
@rushiosan Metroid is my favorite console series. But a game made again by Retro Studios and not Team Ninja is what the hardcore fans most want. The 2D Metroid for 3DS like was previously mentioned by Nintendo and a new 3D game by Retro Studios, the one that makes Metroid games like the golden age of Super Metroid made by Inteligent Systems.
Why is so hard to make a sequel using the very same engine? There is no excuse, this title came out 2 years ago, they had enough time, 3DS was already here when DKC Returns came to Wii.
never got this game for wii...hmmm im thinking of getting it for 3ds.....im sure the 3d will be sick.....plus the wii version has mandatory waggle to roll...hmmm
@sonyfreak456 Camelot Software Planning said they wanted to make a 3D Donkey Kong title in the same vein of DK64.
@sonyfreak456 HECK YEAH! That would be perfect. :D
Update the graphics like they did for Ocarina Of Time.
@sonyfreak456 Yeah, I was quite disappointed when Reggie started talking about Donkey Kong coming to 3DS and it ended up being a port of a 2 year old 2D platformer instead of 10+ year old 3D platformer. I still hold hope that the classic will see the light of day again, but DKCR is still a really good game, and having it on the 3DS could still be pretty sweet.
Remake =/= port, I thought you would at least know that plus the 3DS has a healthy stream of games so I don't see what the big deal is anyways.
Missed out on the original (opted for Kirby's Epic Yarn instead) so I'll be definitely getting this for the 3DS, seems to be my platform for platformers anyways, haha.
@abHS4L88 I'm sure it'll be much better on 3DS than Wii. I loved the original Wii release, but they mapped DK's roll to Wii waggle - a very bad design choice.
That's one thing I didn't like about the Wii version, especially since it's a super challenging game so relying on something like that would lead to a lot of screwing up.
Although I generally don't mind this type of input on games, I had a bit of trouble utilizing it in DKCR, I guess because it's a much faster pace compared to say New Super Mario Bros. and Kirby's Return to Dreamland. Either way, I'm getting it on the 3DS since I prefer playing platformers on my handheld anyways.

@queuing_for_PS4 It;s not like sony rehashes anything right? *cough( uncharted) cough*
@queuing_for_PS4 How is it garbage? Donkey Kong Country Returns was a fun game.
@96augment queuing_for_PS4 can pretty much be found bashing anything non-Sony related just because it's non-Sony related. Best to just ignore him. Or her.
@Discomaster I just like annoying trolls. If they want to be annoying, I can be annoying too. Queuing_for_PS4 has to be a guy. No girl could be that annoying.
Hello oh obsessive Nintendo hater. How is this rehashed garbage when it's a simple port of one of the best platformers of the 7th generation? I get it, because it's not some realistic cinematic blood fest, it's a garbage game. Get a life.
I generally agree with the rehashed part. Garbage, not so much. Nintendo isn't on good terms with me right now, but you're just being silly. But let's talk about your shtick for a moment. Seriously, now, I want to help you. I think you would be a much better troll if you were more subtle. It's the fine line between pedestrian and professional. But based on everything I see from you, you're essentially the Dane Cook of GameSpot trolls. And I think you can do better than that.
But I'm not a troll, I generally regulate myself to only articles I'm interested and and usually only respond to people who I have a response to, whether it be in agreement or disagreement. I can be subtle if I want but I'm going to stick it to a person if they're being an idiot. Calling a port of a game rehashed garbage is clearly ignorance and just trying too hard to troll on Nintendo.
I can understand if people call Nintendo's games rehashes even though I strongly disagree with it but calling it garbage just because it's not what you like is just flat out stupid.
I'm glad they are finally making Mario Golf. Not sure why they didn't bring it out for the Wii, but I'll take the 3DS version for now. Mario & Luigi Dream Team looks fun as well. I forgot to get DKC Returns for the Wii, but I'll get it for the 3DS instead. Finally, some great games for the 3DS. I already have Luigi's Mansion 2 pre-ordered. That's out on Mar 24 (Sun) and Bioshock Infinite follows on Mar 26th. End of the month is going to be great.
