Users attack game for its narrative and simplistic combat.
The Xbox 360 version of the game is currently sitting on an 86 Metascore at the time of writing, but the user score is a significantly lower 3.0 after 288 reviews.
Many of the complaints are aimed squarely at Ninja Theory's characters and narrative, with many criticising some of the late-game (and spoiler-filled) actions of Dante and his acquaintances.
Another common criticism is the level of difficulty, with many accusing it of being too simple for their tastes even on its more challenging modes.
Ninja Theory's take on the series has divided fans since its announcement, but most critics have embraced the game. The new combat approach alongside its attempts to engage with themes of capitalism and corporation in particular have been praised in reviews. "Sure, you may baulk at Dante's trendy new haircut, or maybe even miss a little of that B-movie Devil May Cry insanity," said GameSpot's Mark Walton in his 8.0 review of DmC, "but the heart of what makes the series so enticing and so much fun to play holds true here."
"DmC pulls off that unlikely reboot trick of feeling fresh and inviting while still holding onto what made the original series so appealing and so special. There's no point in looking back: Dante has got a brand-new future in front of him, and if DmC: Devil May Cry is anything to go by, it's going to be a great one."

How about old Dante coming and impaling this emo shit through the ass?
Most of the gamers Devil May Cry's fans want old Dante back, CAPCOM fakes that is not hearing, but it is. Capcom can't ignore us for much time... RE Revelations was the prove that the producers gave ear to the old fans, besides that shit of RE 6...
DMC is really bad. hated the tedious boss fights, they are all the same with different skins. everyone require you to run around in a circle like a chicken with it's head cut off while the giant head/monster/or whatever sits in the center spitting shit at you. what a snore. it bored me to death at halfway. and the story, what the heck is that, twin brothers, just like all those other japanese stories. not one bit of creativity in this game. i gave it a 2/10.
Metacritic user scores are so fake it's not even funny. You can find videos on YouTube where people show how they post hundreds of "zero" reviews to drive scores down for particular games they dislike.
I loved DMC 1 and 3 (two was trash). DMC 4 was entertaining. But I really love the reboot. The weak point in the original DMC's was the story. I really like the story in the new DMC. I like how they tied Dante and Virgil together. You can pull off some serious combos in this game, The action is fun and intense. I don't see why everyone is bashing this new DMC is amazing. Remember people were upset when they announced the reboot of the Batman movies, look how awesome they turned out. With this new story there are so many avenues capcom can go, I think Ninja Theory did an awesome job.
As a fan since the DMC3, what I personally want is for this new DmC game is to be an integrative addition to the series instead of a total reboot. I?d prefer the emo Dante be set as (e.g.) a grandson of original Dante who lives in different era. Thus, no conflict there. The previous playable characters remain intact in the DMC universe, available for future sequels. So there would be 4 playable characters, each with its own concept of combat: original Dante (have many styles & weapons), Nero (badass overpowered devil hand and chargeable sword/gun), Vergil (ass kicking katana swordmanship), and emo Dante (half demon half angel). Then I want Capcom to make a specialized game for each/some of them regularly, improving on previous concepts. And then I want Capcom to regularly host a grand poll asking fans what they want for the next DMC game. Basically a miracle.
So you get two score here. Scores from the educated few that get paid to critic and rate videogames of all kinds. And we have the mindless thousands that probably haven't played the game but feel the need to bash it, because that's whats cool right now.
@Incubus420 so you're saying ones who did play the game and found it not to be what NT and Cacpom claimed are wrong? "educated reviewers aren't always right and they do tend to overhype some games. So far the game isn't selling as well as the last version.Honestly when you compare it to older games( that comparison is inevitable) It doesn't do the older games justice. Its not about being cool. Its to let consumers know this game really isn't Great like people say.Back then a games praises were spread by word of mouth. With Youtube that effect has become much greater. Some will buy the game and a lot will be disappointed. Some will buy and be happy.I'm waiting for Revengence because that game has the speed and technique that I look for in those types of games.DmC was okay but its not Devil May Cry.Woulda been better if it was a Heavenly Sword 2 or something.I hated how Kat was a useless woman.I never seen that in a Devil May Cry game. All the women were fighters not near non exsitant entities that were limited to the role of serving men. This game looks down on women in that sense.Espcially when you see Lilith and what happened to her.Weak women in DmC??? Please.
So these reviews have a validity and credibility equal to a spoiled toddler throwing its toys out of the pram. I knew people could get pathetic, but not THIS pathetic. Anyone with an ounce of common sense will believe the critic's score.
@gazisultima not so fast.If you look at some Youtubers they show how diluted the gameplay is.Espcially how boring the fight against Vergil is.In DMC 3 it was hard becasue you pretty much had to fight to say the least. In this iteration its just dodge hit dodge hit wait wait wait dodge hit etc.Been years since I played DMC3 but I remember weapons clashing and Vergil being way more potent and pro active in his fighting than on DmC. You don't see what the others see.The majority want people to know the game isn't what critics see it as.The game is a step down from what made DMC a great action series. Its funny when you compare that to Platinum's next game. You see what an Action game is suppose to have in it.What's also funny is the fighting on DmC isn't even comparable to Bayonetta. The game for it to be in the line of Devil May Cry shows its doesn't carry the lineage well at all. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkJP5DMncW0
@samson300 @179107199999 @gazisultima No.If you're a DMC fan and you play this you'll beat this easily because everything you learned from the earlier games you'll put here much like if you're and SF2 fan moving to SF4.It way to obvious to win and Vergil's DT was a failed Doppleganger from DMC3.But the real point is look at how you have to win.You don't attack you run around then strike then run then strike then run run run. Even on normal the Old Vergil fight was hard. The fight on here is mundane. If you get a chance to play DMC3 and fight Vergil you'll get more hyped than fighting the new version.
"This is England
This knife of Sheffield steel
This is England
This is how we feel"
The Clash-This is England, from their last album "Cut the Crap"
I'm not sure why that song plays in my mind every time when I think about this new Devil May Cry.
Holy crap I can tell who hasn't played this game at all. No lifers haha wasting time making stuff up! I don't care what you say! I know in your hearts (the people bashing the game) that when you sat down and played it you thought it was f*cking awesome, but didn't want to admit how terribly wrong you were. Its not Devil May Cry we aren't in the 2000s anymore get modern. No one wants to be running around ONE castle with no plot
@ZemnisX Funny in the other DMC's you weren't running around one castle.I guess you only played DMC1 so I can't fault you but in the other games you're aren't confined to a castle

@Bradjune80 DMC 2 to 4 were rapidly forgotten too. We are not talking about Elders Scrolls, broda... It's DMC... It's basically a Capcom fighting game single player. I'm enjoying the game.
New Dante plays VERY similar to Nero (everybody forget the little final fantasy kid on the last one, terrible)...
One thing that I'm really not enjoying is the amount of cutscenes every level. This gameplay doesn't work with so many story during a stage. Max Payne and MGS worked, because the gameplay is not so frenetic...
I feel you about the "easiness"... I miss the "try to not get hit"... Ate least in the Son of Sparda difficulty, you have to be more creative in combos to get SSS...
I love been able to control the camera, though...
In a day and age where games are consumed and discarded like a movie, I don't understand your complaints... Devil May Cry 1 was innovative for its gameplay, and the rest is just rehash...
The combat itself is pretty average. What pulls it down is the fact that there's no way to aim your attacks, and that's a pretty big deal considering there's a lot of focus on pulling weak enemies to you and pulling yourself towards stronger enemies. Then there are color coded enemies that can only be hurt by certain weapons, limiting your combo options. Oh, and there's a shitton of bugs too(enemies that freeze in place, enemies that won't spawn, bosses become unkillable and the infamous flying glitch).
How to make a bad game look fine. A guide in three steps by Ninja Theory and Bioware:
1.Make a bad game
2.Make a feature even worse, and stir controversie around it
3.Blame any valid criticism in people angry about point 2
Not only is dantes new look and character horrible, that would be one thing. But the game itself is bad. The gameplay is shallow as it gets. Though everything looks flashy there is no depth to the combat and the style system is pointless and broken due to it being almost purely damage based. The fans are upset about a lot more then just his hair. And have been trying to tell the reviewers and others all their legitimate problems for months only to be Denigrated and talked down too.
When you say I have a problem with X, Y, Z. And the response from IGN, GAMESPOT, EUROGAMER boiles down to "YOU JUST DONT LIKE HIS HAIR". Why would the fans not be even more pissed off. The complainers havent been talking about the hair for a long time and reviewers and NinjaTheory FanBois have ignored us. Its a replay of the people that brought up valid points about what was going wrong with Diablo3 before its launch. Blizzard, just like NT did here, attacked the people with legitimate complaints rather then treat them like human beings.
The marketing straregy of attacking the core fans is what is wrong here. And GameSpot is guilty of taking part in it. So this game failing and the reviewers being exposed as nothing more then marketers is a good thing.
@Bradjune80 I'm gonna go Psychologist on your ass. From reading your response I can see you're narcissistic (inflated view of yourself and your opinion) It's also clear you never gave the game a chance and decided to hate it regardless. Expectations colour reality which is why you should go into everything with an open mind. You evidently haven't. Therefore, your narcissism mixed with your biased viewpoint make for a truly unpleasant person. Try therapy.
ive played all the dmc games and liked them all 2 was not all that great. 3 was the best out of the original series with the styles combat cutscenes and difficulty but in that story there were loose ends that left me hanging. DmC was a great game to stayed to the core gameplay the combat was fluent and left the players with plenty of control over their combat and let them make their own combos to their playstyle to me it was not a letdown it was amazing. the difficulties may have been easy as in the first dmc but as the series progressed they got harder. this one has a storyline and dantes new attitude and look fit in with it all to well. people complain about dante and virgil and how they are different and stray from the original but to me thats just opening up the series to come. if u look outside of the box this game could be a potential prequel to the original. as the original went 3 1 2. 3 left some plot holes as of why does virgil want to rule over the demons and humans. donte and virgil fight numerous times in 3 but we never got why they fought. this game gives us a look at donte as a teenager (his new look) and virgil (his new look). and also in 3 during the first fight dante asks virgil how long has it been a year which means they met before the time of 3. if u have finished the new one then u no that the ending deals with dante and virgil. so as the new series progresses we will see dante and virgil change into the original characters we know and love. mundus was in the first one and wanted to kill dante so i take it for revenge and for spardas power which DmC has showed us. all in all i give this game an 8 for combat characters and storyline because it has so much potential to give us the backstory and events that leads up to the original
@penalsnows Dante and Vergil fight because of a difference of beliefs. One seeks power the other just is happy with who he his.And DmC didn't do justice to the story at all.Old Dante had a final form that storywise was greater than Mundus' power. In DmC he's not powerful. And at the end of 3 we see why Vergil became Nelo Angelo. Also the Combos in DMC 3 and 4 were crazier and better even in the basic sense without jump cancelling becuase of the weapons and styles you could use to make combos.DmC's combo creation is ok but not DMC standard.
@penalsnows First of all, there is a DMC 4.
DmC is a reboot, it can never be used as a prequel to 3 (there is a manga prequel)
Virgil in DMC3 wants power because he failed to save his mother, and Dante being half angel also prevents any connections to the original.
Did the game deserve to be let down because of it's story thou? Isn't that a bit unfair? There always a first time for everything.
@91210user They told us that it was going to be Shaespearian level story. When you dont deliver on something even half way good after a claim like that it is in no way unfair to bash them over it. It would be wrong NOT to bash them after such a claims and PR and all the trash talking they did about the fans of the previous games. Not to mention Capcom picked them because of their history or writing good games. NT should be ashamed.
@Bradjune80 @91210user I never read that, but you might be right. Dante was always a product of the 90s (when DMC 1 was released, considering the game is Japanese)... So dull, dumb and cocky that was fun
@koospetoors You know that the wig and the squirrel sperm were just jokes... People is taking this game too serious.... Capcom + Old franchises = joke.... Everybody knows that... Lets make a retrospective of Capcom:
- RE 5 and 6: horror franchise turned action. RE 7 will have competitive multiplayer... Lol
- DMC: reboot. Because they ran out ideas
- Fighting games: awesome gameplay, terrible value (compare with the number of extras in MK, for example) and ridiculous DLC strategy
Dinosaurs, like Capcom, tend to die...
@koospetoors Yup people spitting in my face tend to piss me off.
The game isn't that bad I really enjoyed the game except when dante was screaming like a girl when mundes charged at him or when he was trying to save vergil anyway the background music is great I liked it and as they said the game rebooted so don't expect the game to be like the old ones (for me i love the old series more than the new one) But i hoped that the new series is going to be like we'd expected (OLD SERIES) ,BUT since this is a new series i guess that they will make it better in the next game of the series
DMC is one of the best in this franchise, you must play it to understand how perfect and fun this game is.
Well, this isn't a surpise. After all, with all the damn failings/scams by the gaming companys now adays, it's no wonder fans aren't happy with all this crap we are getting. ME 3 ending, day 1 dlc, Bayonette wii u exlusive anyone, attacking the used game company (worst one) and Dante's new look which is just horrible (not to mention his attitude which is much worse than even Devil may cry 2-_-). I've been around the Devil May Cry franchise for a long time but seriously, if this is how the new games is going... then let the series die with respect.
The funny thing is that I couldn't even stand to rent the game for 1 whole day as it was a piece of $*(#. -_-
Haven't got the chance to experience DmC yet since I'm waiting for the PC version so I can't express my opinion of it. But from what I've seen from the videos I've watched of DmC, it's definitely not worth 0's, 1's or 2's in the ratings. I mean... seriously?
DmC is honestly up there with 1 and 4 for me, as far as what tier of quality it belongs on. The game is easier than previous entries in the series, yes, but it's not so easy as to make it feel as if the game is playing itself or anything, like Enslaved kind of felt.
By the way, for those who haven't played it yet: The combat feels fluid and fantastic. Not as hard to master as DMC 3 or 4, but the ability to swap five weapons out on the fly and in mid-combo allows you to create your own string of attacks easily. That's a plus in my book.
Also, the new Dante isn't nearly as awful as I thought he would be. The whole game is far more understated as far as the way characters behave but it's more easy to relate to, and the story as a whole is definitely of a different, and better, quality than that of previous games.
I don't know. Even as a long time fan of the DMC series and a naysayer of this iteration up until recently, I have to say that Ninja Theory surprised me in a good way with their effort and I can't wait to see what they can do with a second game.
This ISN'T news. Metacritic has always been known for un-accurate, completely fake reviews from trolls. It's rare when you see user scores above 6.0 for the overall average.
@XboxGuy1537 Angry Joe already unveil that most of 0 to 3 review on Meta were made by the same guy...
@XboxGuy1537 Just out of curiosity, is there any reason that you used "un-accurate"? I'm assuming you realize that inaccurate is a word, so are you making a reference to something? I'm not trying to be rude, or play grammar police; I'm honestly just curious.
I've never played any DMC games, and i'll start with this one, because it just looks fun, and I have no intention of playing any of the series' previous games. I hope i'll make a big number of fanboys just ragechoke to death with this comment: ALL FANBOYS MUST DISAPPEAR
(note fanboys? decent people who are fans of the series, but that category of people who build shrines to their favorite series/characters and bring gehenna unto anyone who proposes a change)
I'm a huge fan of DMC series....but this game sucks on storyline, boss battles. Whatever is left, make this game not worth buying.
@reyan1455 do you really remember the DMC 1 storyline... Wait, "storyline"? Have you even played DMC 1? Or you played Marvel vs Cap 3 and thought Dante was awesome?
@meatz666 lol THANK YOU. Dmc has always had really bad storylines/ dialogue. If you disagree, then your probably still prepubescent. Also, everyone keeps saying this one is so much easier , but the only challenging dmc was 3. 4 had an extensive combat system, but that doesn't make the game hard.
@OldJames420 : glad to see people knows what was the real quality with the storyline of this games. The only rediming thing it has it's how well placed are the scenes in Devil May Cry 3 special ed. You know, "class B", so bad it's good.
With assured storytelling, great combat, and imaginative design, DmC: Devil May Cry is a fun reboot, despite some frame rate issues and audio bugs.
