With its late 2009 release approaching fast, DJ Hero has added another high-profile turntablist to its virtual roster. Today, Red Octane announced that DJ Jazzy Jeff will appear in the rhythm title, which is in development at another internal Activision studio, UK-based FreeStyle Games. He joins fellow vinyl-scratchers DJ Shadow, DJ AM, DJ Z-Trip, and the famed Grandmaster Flash (see below) in the Wii, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3 title.

Born January 1965 in Philadelphia, DJ Jazzy Jeff (real name Jeffrey A. Townes) is most famous for being one-half of the 1980s-1990s hip-hop group DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, along with Will Smith. After Smith left in 1993 to start on the road to Hollywood stardom, DJ Jazzy Jeff went into producing, creating his own record label, a Touch of Jazz. He has released several solo works, including the albums The Magnificent (2002) and The Return of the Magnificent (2007).

In DJ Hero, DJ Jazzy Jeff will have his own setlist, including two exclusive mash-ups: Tears for Fears' "Shout" vs. Eric B. & Rakim's "Eric B. Is President" and LL Cool J's "Rock the Bells" vs. The Aranbee Pop Symphony Orchestra's "Bittersweet Symphony." All in all, DJ Hero will feature 100 individual songs in 80 all-new mixes previously unavailable to the public.

For the record, I never said that Trance/House/Techno/Electronica shouldn't be included in this game. There are some very talented DJ's out there right now burning up the scene. Not taking too much away from them but, DJ's now are using a LOT of computerized equipment where DJ's of the past had to make what they did with what they had. My point is toward the people that think that there shouldn't be ANY hip-hop on this game. Just because you don't like that genre doesn't mean it is not good or popular music. I'll admit, as of late, hip-hop does REALLY suck. @ -Celeste- : I know what beatboxing is and no, that wasn't what I was referring to. Just so you know, beatboxing is making music noises with your mouth. Mixing wasn't primarily done by Techno etc. DJ's. Take DJ Jazzy Jeff, for example. Listen to one of his original albums with The Fresh Prince. He "mixed" several different songs together, a lot of them coming from old 60's and 70's pop and funk songs. A lot of the original hip-hop DJ's mixed several different songs just to get the full beat they were looking for. Not only that, but before, mixing was done with existing music. A lot of times now, DJ's are creating there own music (usually computerized) so they can edit and manipulate it as they seem fit. Don't get me wrong, it takes a lot of talent to make something sound good. Both DJ's are talented in their own rights but it's like comparing apples to oranges. And what some don't understand is that DJ's from the past are still big in the industry now you just don't hear about them because they are not out headlining tours; they are in the background producing and mixing on other's albums. They are still pioneering their art-form and some of them have even done some Electronica/House/Techno Thanks for the history lesson though.

DJing began with hiphop and it should be in the game but it's not a reason to ignore very popular genres altogether which are probably more closely associated with DJing over the last 2 decades. Personally, I don't associate Gwen Stefani, Nirvana, Eminem and Marvin Gaye with DJing. Despite the popularity of Armin Van Buuren for example, he's not a household name so his tracks aren' t going to help sales as much as Jay-Z's, no matter how relevant either of them are to DJing. It's understand why they're including who they are, just a shame they don't think dance music needs much of a part in a DJing game.

I love how anyone asking for anything more trance or electronica is getting the big thumbs down on this wall. Enjoy your garbage hip hop.

Celeste: Conan is exactly right: ALL DJing began in hiphop. And no one who knows anything about hiphop or DJing would ever confuse mixing with beatboxing! That comment alone totally negates your credibility. Beatboxing has almost always been performed primarily by the lyricist. Mixing is the fusion of two or more separate musical pieces (original or not) period. This is not to take anything away from the trance/house DJs that you speak of, they are simply an offshoot of the original art form and are brilliant artists in their own right. And as far as those bashing this for being "too hiphop", it's about the music and music comes in many genres. Just as Rock Band's roots were in rock music and expanded to include country, pop, funk and soon hiphop, DJ Hero's roots are in hiphop and will include trance, house, dance, etc. The beauty of this genre is that ANY two songs, across any genre can come together and make a brand new masterpiece! Hopefully, DJ Hero will take advantage of that freedom to the fullest and then we can all just kick back and enjoy the MUSIC!

Where are Tiesto, Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, and Paul van Dyk who are in the top 10 of best DJ's in the world. I guess not in DJ Hero cause they don't make hiphop.

About DJ Hero, I'll quote DJ Jazzy Jeff himself, "Parents just don't understand."

Okay? Add Grandmaster Flash, or Fatboy Slim, or Beck's crazy song with "Two Turn Tables and a Microphone", and i'm still not getting this game.

BTW, Conan hit it right on the head. Those techno/electronica/club "DJ's" are simply talking heads. DJing started in the streets and parties primarily because the REAL DJ's (understand that the definition is Disc Jockey) wanted to rock the funky parts of records that were usually only 8-16 beats longs (if that long). So to do that you had to mix it back and forth to keep it tight. Once the rappers came along they did eclipse the DJ's cause they were the faces and voices you heard. I rocked the streets for near a decade and worked with Scott La Rock before he was killed so I can appreciate the real DJ's. I also worked with some of the early "club DJ's" simply playing the fastest BPM cuts they could get their hands on. Truly wack. Put in some kinda tribute to Jam Master J and you got my money. I haven't bought a full price Activision game since Tony Hawk 2 but this one will break that trend. Here's a launch day purchase.

OK, now I might have to get the game since they got Flash and Jazzy Jeff signed up. F-ck the wackass club DJ's (DJ AM, DJ Shadow, etc), this game wouldn't have even been real without Flash (he should be the final boss or Kool Herc or Theodore) but having Jeff in there ups the difficulty if he truly decides to bring it. I hope he rips it. If you've ever seen him live, you know that is how a real DJ works. If you haven't, then you've never seen true cutting going on. And Flash should use either Freedom or Good Times cause Lord knows, he may be the king but, those are the only records he can really cut or scratch. LOL

I like some of the older music they are listing.

Scratching was primarily utilized for hip-hop in its beginning. However, Mixing, has had and always will have its beginning in the electronic/house/trance genre. All of their music is mixed, just like you said. The vast majority, i.e. close to all, of the music in this genre is custom made by DJ's. I think you're confusing mixing with beatboxing (sp?). Before you go tell people to do some research, go and do your own research. All the well known DJ's are in the trance genre for a reason. You don't see all the well known football players playing baseball do you?

I really enjoy reading all the posts of people complaining about this game having too much hip-hop. Just because the "popular" DJ's right now are in trance, house, and techno, does not mean that's how DJ-ing should be portrayed. Scratching and DJ-ing started in hip-hop. Those DJ's invented the art-form, and laid the groundwork for the DJ's of today. Grandmaster Flash, DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ Red Alert, Kid Capri, hell even Funkmaster Flex; all hip-hop DJ's that helped pioneer scratching to what it is today. None of what is being done now would even be possible without the hip-hop DJ's. Not only that, but most of the Trance/House/Techno music is already mixed. What's the point of mixing a mixed song? Do some research, learn your history and appreciate an art-form.

I am glad that this is not a dance game. I want hip hop music. The point of this game is the turn table element and last I checked those trance/techno, whatever only use turn tables to switch songs and that is not all this game is about.

Really this needs to be renamed Hiphop Hero. If they want a DJ Hero game, they should take a look at the list of the world's most popular DJs http://www.djmag.com/index.php?op=top_100 and try to include at least some of them. There's far too much hip-hop in this game for me even if they do add dance music. I hope a whole new dance orientated game is made.

This is going the wrong way! I expected trance/techno/D&B/house and other dance music but this is turning out to be hip hop hero what a crap!

I though being the DJ was the best position, especially since most of the rappers spent their time reppin their DJs throughout their whole music. I'll get this game if they have Paid in Full, glad there's more hip hop in this game.

Those complaining about DJ Jazzy Jeff might not be old enough to remember when being a DJ was the "worst" position in a group, and for people to remember your name you had to be damned good. They're also trying to get people that wouldn't normally even look at a music game to change their minds. Grand master Flash got my friend to preorder.

When songs from: Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, Above and Beyond (Oceanlab), Ferry Corsten, John O'Callaghan, Rank 1, Dash Berlin, Black Jarrell, etc or choons from ASOT / Clublife Podcast, then call me. Those are real DJ's / mixers. Not some LL Cool J / Hip Hop stuff.

Jazzy Jeff is absolutely awesome. But I absolutely hate Activision and I hope this game fails huge for them. You can agree with me that if it is a success that they will milk it to no end, but some of you love that don't you.
