Battlefield studio general manager says he understands reputation, but claims publisher is "very prone" to trying new concepts.
Some may classify Electronic Arts as a publisher that relies on sequels, but DICE general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson believes that is an unfair association. Speaking to Gamasutra in a new interview, the executive claimed EA is highly innovative.
"EA is actually very prone to try out new things," he said. "And I have to say that sometimes I think we get too much crap for not being innovative. We do release new IPs, and we do take care of IPs that have been out there. And perhaps not so successful, but we try to get new things out there as well."
Troedsson said he understands the criticisms leveled against EA, considering DICE has regularly released new entries in the Mass Effect, Battlefield, and its sports franchises, though he does not believe this means EA is not innovative.
"Now, that might sound strange coming from me, working on Battlefield. We've been around for 10 years, and we just keep doing more of the same, but being innovative in that space," he said.
The executive explained that innovation is "tricky," as not all may see or understand innovation as EA sees it.
"Innovation is something that actually changes something for the better, renews something--and I think we do that all the time," he said. "But some of them are big and some of them are small, and some people disagree, saying, 'That's not an innovation!' and it's like, 'No, maybe not for you, but for the people playing the game it's a big thing.'"

EA is definitely innovative, mostly in negative ways. Remember that innovation is only worthwhile when it's for the better.

Well, EA is responsible for Spore, and I loved that game and also feel it's highly underrated.

When you say you loved that game, are you talking about the feature cut, boring mess it ended up as, or do you mean the Spore as Will Wright envisioned it back in 2005 before EA destroyed every interesting aspect of it ?

Errr... I'm guessing I'm not the first to say this, but Mass Effect has never been handled by DICE, and to my knowledge, DICE hasn't developed any sports games - some of EA's sports franchises have used DICE's Frostbite 2 engine, but that's about it.
EA is a lot of BAD things. "Innovative" is definitely not one of them. It's easy to loosen someone's tongue into saying something which is not, by bribing them.

You can tell by the number of watered down sequels with tacked on multiplayer that they love the dollar bill more than the gamers, who by the way, are responsible for feeding their greedy mouths.
They make profits not because they are innovative, but rather because a large portion of console users are kids/adults who don't know any better. They are in the dark. Not a personal fault of theirs, but they haven't seen the light as of yet. Just look at Madden or any of their sports titles. How does crap like that even sell.
They stay away from PC because mods could actually improve their games and they are afraid of that because of sales. Instead of embracing mods they fear it. And now, they have eliminated editing altogether from their titles so you are wholly dependent on them for even a roster update... $60 please.
@GSGuy321 How does awesome games like Beyond Good and Evil, Kingdoms of Amalur, Shadows of the Damned and Psychonauts not sell. Why take risks when people are just gonna ignore new games and buy the newest sequel instead.
Innovative was SEGA, but their edginess and risk taking made them go down in flames. EA, is just a corporate entity. There is no ambition and so-called innovation in creating video games anymore. They get devs like DICE to make a game with destructable envrionments and take credit for their talents. and DICE sounds like they are sucking big d*** and getting their a**es shoved with money to say what they are saying now.

1 Like That is not what most gamers have against EA he should know that it is what EA has done to awesome dev teams once they gobbled them up like Westwood studios,Bioware,Mythic,etc. They have a tendency to drop support for games that are still making money,but if it is not making the money they expect its gone.They way they do Madden every year by charging full price for a few adds,and lets not forget the way they try to monoplize the industry like NFL exclusives which drives away competition etc... There is a hell of a lot more gamers have against EA than just innovation.

Yes i know the meaning of innovation but are you Mr.Karl sure all those innovations that you guys are actually implementing onto your games are changing the games to be better? Profit-wise yes but consumer-wise no.You got my point.
I am a fan of DICE, and love their properties, but If EA loved you so, they would let you do what you do best instead of trying to make its studios make crap.

Innovation is not something that you notice in games. Worse is that a number of people believe that the gimmick that the indie games come up with are innovative
@wiouds If I read your post correctly, it appears you are attempting to poo-poo indie developers by saying they are not innovative. You should try new games coming out like FTL or Wasteland 2 or Banner Saga and tell me those games are poor and not innovative. I have played the FTL beta and it is PIMP!

4 Like The year EA financed Mirror's Edge was an exceptional year. I can't remember all the titles but they also bailed out Brutal Legend from the greedy wrath of Activision. But since they haven't done enough to be called INNOVATIVE. So, sorry Mr. Magnus, EA's current path of trying to pimp out the F2P concept and kill single player is not what you call creative or industry friendly. It's all for money, nothing else. Plus, Mass Effect gameplay became cookie cutter third person shooter and DLCs went off the hook since EA got involved. So yeah, EA is still in the same league with Activision.
