DICE bringing Frostbite engine to mobiles

Battlefield developer is hiring for a new project that will aim to bring the studio's game engine to mobile platforms.

Battlefield developer DICE has plans to bring its Frostbite game engine--the technology behind Battlefield 3 and Need for Speed: The Run--to mobile platforms.

The studio is currently advertising for a mobile software developer whose task will be to take Frostbite "to the next level." According to the job description, the position will require applicants to work within a larger team dedicated to bringing the Frostbite engine to mobile platforms, with requirements for applicants to have experience of at least one mobile operating system (iOS or Android).

Earlier this year, EA Games label boss Patrick Soderlund revealed that the current iteration of the game engine--Frostbite 2--was originally designed to support next-generation games.

Both Danger Close's Medal of Honor Warfighter and BioWare's 2013-dated Command & Conquer: Generals 2 will be powered by Frostbite 2.

In March, Electronic Arts announced the formation of EA Gothenburg, a Swedish shop that will focus exclusively on Frostbite 2 projects.

I'm interested to see what Frostbite can do on a mobile platform from a purely technical standpoint, but I'm not going to be buying any games because I hate trying to play with a touchscreen. I just hope DICE doesn't waste too much time on the mobile stuff.

Its not even gonna be called Generals 2 anymore. Just simply Command & Conquer.

What a waste of good technology...

Are we going to get to the point where every EA game is going to use Frostbite? On the one hand that's cool because then it's like what Valve does with the Source engine. The critical difference however is that Valve releases mod tools and lets people play around with the Source engine, and to the best of my knowledge EA has failed to do anything along that line.

Spartan_418

@Sgthombre There's still the possibility that it might happen for some games, DICE has said that the reason they don't add mod tools for Battlefield 3 is that players might use them for hacking/cheating purposes.

A phone maxing all cores and the GPU is going to kill your battery in like a few hours. Why not just play it on say a laptop instead?

And Dragon Age 3! Don't forget it powers DA3! Where is my Dragon Age?!

I hope to see support for Windows Phone OS too...

@M-S-M-S Unfortunately, that phone has a very tiny percentage/ segment of users so it's not a priority for devs, at least yet.

Spartan_418
Spartan_418

@SolidTy True, but in some ways it's a more attractive platform than Android because Microsoft sets fairly high hardware standards for Windows Phones. With Android, a dev is expected to support both the high-end phones and the budget ones, which means games typically aren't optimized for any particular hardware.

@GamerYnoX Since the article points to the tech behind BF3 and NFS:The Run, they are speaking of Frostbite 2.

I hate this mobile outbreak. Touch screen controls will never be good enough. We need sticks and buttons and there's handheld consoles for this. Just let mobile phones be mobile phones.

If I want the serious gaming on my travels I'd buy a handheld console, period.

@Wahab_MinSeo  @snaketus @jmr1986 @IllegallyAwesum Just because you can attach a gamepad or a keyboard/mouse to a phone doesn't make it a viable solution.  I swear tech people insist upon doing things just because they can, and not necessarily because it is a good thing or idea.  Hell, I can ride a skateboard from L.A. to San Diego, but why would I?

@snaketus Nobody is forcing you to buy games on your phone, if you don't like it don't buy, simple. Just stop whinning like a little girl about it.

@jmr1986  @snaketus Correct, but I'm not thrilled by the fact that these mobile games take resources and investment opportunities away from the serious, hardcore, whatever you want to call them games.  Let's face it, mobile platforms are all about creating simple shallow games that appeal to the more people, many of whom do not even like gaming and never even play games except on their phone or tablet.  They are mostly passing distractions where the business operates on the principle of getting people to shell out $5 on impulse because it's easy and automatic.  Is it WRONG?  No.  Does it impact the gaming industry in a way that is negatice for serious gamers?  I believe yes. it does.  They can yap all they want about creating new experiences, blah blah blah, they are just going where the money is.  To me, and I think yo many of the kinds of people that frequent places like Gamespot, it's not something we should be happy about.  I know several people that play games on their phones and tablets, and none of them ever read any gaming sites, they simply don't care.  That is who this stuff is MAYBE good for, not "us".

Well, if they can get Unreal 3 on iOS and Android, this shouldn't be too hard...even though EA doesn't have the best rep on Android.

Game playability aside, how many phones would actually be powerful enough to run Frostbite engine games?

Making it run on the PS Vita, however, would be useful.

Majkic666

@alext_b well for Apple lovers they will have to wait for Iphone 8 or 9 since we all know that they are behind in hardware...

For android and windwos phones most will probably be able to run it in a year or so

Hate to say it but...Frostbite seems like it sucks.  Constant patching...30FPS..etc...I honestly can't tell if it's the engine or the developer that makes Battlefield feel so...choppy.  Destructibility? Almost non-existent.  Not nearly as advertised.  EA..what a joke.

@StarkJJ wtf are you talking about!? 30fps? please---I get 60 on my pc. Don't blame the Frostbite 2 engine because your pathetic little consoles can't handle its splendor.
