Deus Ex: The Fall launching on iOS this summer

Latest installment in series launching later this year on iOS devices for $7; developed by Square Enix Mobile in conjunction with Eidos Montreal and N-Fusion.

After teases and much speculation, Square Enix today officially announced Deus Ex: The Fall, an iOS game due out this summer for $7.

Developed by Square Enix Mobile in collaboration with Deus Ex: Human Revolution studio Eidos Montreal and N-Fusion, The Fall is described as a "story-driven action RPG." It is the first Deus Ex title in the series to be released on mobile and tablet devices.

The Fall is set in 2027, a period described as a "golden era for science, technology, and human augmentation," but also a time of serious social divide and "global conspiracy." The game stars Ben Saxon, a former British SAS Mercenary who underwent a physical augmentation.

"Betrayed by his private military employers, the Tyrants, not only is his own life at risk, but for all augmented humans, time is running out," reads the game's description.

The Fall picks up directly after the events of Random House's Deus Ex: The Icarus Effect novel from James Swallow.

"The team has done an incredible job creating a whole new story and controls for intuitive touch screen gameplay, whilst staying true to the Deus Ex universe," Eidos Montreal game director Jean-Francois Dugas said in a statement. "Players can expect exploration, action, hacking, stealth, social enhancers, player choice and consequence--the full Deus Ex experience."

Square Enix mobile general manager Antony Douglas added that the company will not cut any corners on The Fall just because the game is for mobile and not consoles.

"Smart devices are central to Square Enix's platform strategy and we approach it with the same attention as our boxed and digital releases," he said. "Deus Ex: The Fall is going to be testament to our commitment in delivering high quality entertainment on mobile and tablet devices."

I am a big fan of the Deus Ex series, but this one looks like Deus Mehx.

I'm sure your hands are always going to be in the way of the action and tapping is so inaccurate.

I am disappointed, but it was my fault to get worked up before hearing any details about the game. I am glad this is cleared up sooner rather than later.

Finally, an AAA game on tablets. Too bad I don't have an iPad.

I hope it has auto-aim though, aiming on a tablet screen is an exercise in frustration.

They are smart for doing an easy money maker, but stupid for teasing the fans of the series like that. I only played Human Revolution and it was really good excluding some of the boss fights. I would really like to play another one, just not on a phone or some sort of tablet. I am pretty sure we'll see another new Deus Ex  game in the next couple of years that will satisfy us.

small buttons/joysticks would make sense on a tablet but that wouldn't be futuristic OR mature looking now would it. Just butcher gaming instead. Probably half the reason people buy tablets.

@brunocj2 Because everyone was excited for a full fledged triple A follow up and instead we got....

A 7 dollar mobile spinoff.  WOOOOOOO

Although I will admit graphically it looked quite impressive, so fingers crossed that it doesn't suck.

This would be my biggest gaming let down in years, if not for the Xbox One. Deus Ex HR is my second favorite game of this generation (only after Mass Effect tril), and to see it reduced to this, I just cant stomach it. I was so excited to see the next REAL game in the series, as I feel HR was under appreciated and this is what we get?? It wouldn't hurt so much if they did not get us so hype first, I would have just ignored it if they just announced it without all the teasers. This sucks. F u Square and Eidos.

Disappointed that the next installment in the Deus Ex series is on a mobile platform and not on the PC, 360 and PS3.

Most of these mobile app games are usually played  only during "bathroom breaks" ;-)

First thought come to mind when I know this game is mobile : "Shit, failed."

Jedilink109

What the hell is wrong with all of you?!

It's a game. Why such hatred and venom over some frickin app game?!

Phones and tablets are huge nowadays, so people make games for them. Some games are really fantastic, others aren't. This game looks like a fantastic game for me to be able to play on the go. If you so badly hate mobile app based games then don't go to game sites that cover stories about mobile apps.

This absolute vitriol over mobile apps is frickin old. Tablets and powerful phones that people can play games on are here to stay for the time being. Deal with it already. You've had the past several years to see this coming. This should not be a surprise to anyone.

And if they put this game on Android then it'll be playable on the Nvidia Shield, so people can play it with real buttons, oh wait you hate that too because it plays mobile games. There really is nothing to satisfy games anymore. They hear news and all they want to do is complain instead of ignore it or enjoy the fun new games. And you guys arent even always complaining about mobile app based games, you complain about basically EVERYTHING. I'd rather play videogames and have a good time. Get over yourselves people. This is getting ridiculous.

@Jedilink109

People wanted and were excited about a sequel to Deus Ex.  Instead this was put out, it is inaccessible to a fair amount of people and the quality of the game is limited on that device.

Jedilink109
Jedilink109

And Sega Genesis, Super NES, N64, PS1, PS2, Xbox, GameCube were all horribly limited in their quality too then right?

They just put Knights Of The Old Republic on ipad last week. That's known as one of the greatest games ever made. Along with GTA Vice City, which is also on ipad, as well as Bastion (a huge hit on Xbox 360 last year) Marathon and Doom, Jet set Radio, plants Vs Zombies, Machinarium, etc. all known for being quality titles.

Why can't a tablet game be labeled a "quality" game when so many of them are the EXACT SAME games that have become classics on other platforms? How is this game any different? If you just saw gameplay footage and no on screen buttons, only in game footage, you'd think the game looks pretty solid, so why is it now terrible because the person plays the game using a touch screen? Especially when the game looks like it's just as full featured as the console title (and in the case of these ports of titles from other systems, it being the exact same title)?

I just don't see the difference man, I'm sorry. No buttons? Other than that, the games don't look any worse than they did on the old PS2, or on a PC or Xbox.

@Jedilink109

I didn't say they can't be quality games, just that the quality was limited when on that device.  KOTOR was an Xbox game, it would be nice if it was a new release that was moving forward.  From what I've heard of KOTOR and similar titles, controls (especially moving about) can be difficult to use and I can only assume it would be the same for similar game such as this.

If this was developed instead for the current/nextgen consoles it would have given them much more to work with.  While an IOS game can be good, what they can do *is* limited when compared to other consoles.  Also again, the game on this device has limited accessibility, a lot of people are missing out on the game who would have still loved to have played it.

@Jedilink109 Because usually fps or tps  don't work well on mobile platform, the only decent one I've played is Dead Space for iOS, the other shooters are just unplayable for me.

Jedilink109
Jedilink109

And I think Dead Space on mobile is an awesome game by the way. But there's plenty of good mobile games. Some people just can't get used to the controls on a phone or tablet. That's fine. But if that's the case, just don't play those games. It's fine.

As for good shooters on mobile, there's Modern Combat 3 and 4, the NOVA games (1-3), there's also Dead Trigger (and soon to be a sequel). These touch based games are different from many shooters because each person is comfortable with their own settings and so on for the games they play so often times when you start a mobile game there's a bit of customization when you begin a new title, but that's perfectly fine in my opinion (I almost always customize every game's controls the first time I start to play it). If you can't play them, fine. Just don't go to a website where there's GOING to be announcements on mobile games and then hate mobile games simply because they're mobile games. There are tons of fun games on tablets. Some people like them, some don't, I just wish those who don't would stop with the constant barrage of obnoxious pointless hatred.

They're frickin videogames people. It's not like they're bad political policies which end up killing tons of people every year. Complain about something worth complaining about, that's all I'm saying.

Jedilink109
Jedilink109

I totally understand you wishing for a new console title! I get it. I just don't understand why when Gamespot announces a new 3DS title, you don't find EVERY SINGLE COMMENT to be extremely hateful, but if the exact same game is put on tablets, then they're all hateful.

I just really don't get it. And besides, even if its not the new title I was expecting (and it wasn't) it still looks like a sweet awesome game, that seems to remain faithful to the look and feel of the previous title, it'll just be played a different way. Besides, the game will be frickin SEVEN DOLLARS. I'm certainly not complaining about that! Haha!

Jerrymedic
Jerrymedic like.author.displayName 1 Like

@Jedilink109 Well, you have admit that a mobile game would have a lot of limitation compare to PC or Console?also most people are expect a huge blockbuster AAA game on all three platform, but in the end all we have is just a mobile game.  Some people might have overreacted a little, but that's perfectly understandable.

Not saying mobile is definitely bad, like I said I played some good ones, but this is definitely not what I was hoping for.

Jedilink109
Jedilink109

I should be clear here I'm not saying it's the greatest way to play these games. I prefer using keyboard and mouse or my controller (depending on the game) I just don't understand what the INTENSE HATRED is for tablets and phone based gaming. I mean, if you don't like it.....just don't frickin play the games. I don't understand why people FLIP OUT and crap their pants about this stuff. And it's a game announcement. It's not even like its a story about some game company coming up with some ridiculous new policy to horribly screw over the fans or something.

This wouldnt be as bad if they hadnt have just done this like a month ago with april fools

Twice, the die hard PC centered fans thought that we would get a new installment, twice we were disappointed

If they were planning to launch a mobile game, which I'm like meh, whatever. They shouldnt have done the april fools first. As now I'm pretty much like f*ck dues ex cbb.

This being said, nobody can say that square enix dont do a lot of the scene with new IP. They alrearyd announced 1 new IP this week, they just did 2 last year. Square Enix is pretty boss for gaming all round.

Wow, my hype  for a new Deus Ex went right out the window.

Have 0 interest in mobile "rpgs" and things, just can't offer the same gameplay/depth as a full fledged pc game.

Square Enix is bleeding money, and Deus Ex is one of the few games that brought them a good profit, so isntead of making a PROPER sequel they decide to make a mobile game? Yeah good luck with that.

Hey guys, let's take a beloved hardcore franchise with a ton of depth and potential, and turn it into a crappy mobile app. What could possibly go wrong?! The kids will love it!

Seriously, I have no idea what the fuck they were thinking here.

DarkReign2552
DarkReign2552 like.author.displayName like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 3 Like

Wow. First Halo and now Deus Ex... Gaming really has gone to shit. Can't even get our videogames on real consoles these days. Instead they insist on us using these shitty overpriced and underpowered little devices with awful touch-screen controls and a market of gamers who's interest is limited almost exclusively to "5-minute time wasters."

I said this about Spartan Assault and I'll say this about The Fall. Why the fuck would anybody want to sit on their phone/tablet and play a feature-length game? If you're out and about, you're too busy doing other things besides gaming to actually care, but if you're at home, why play on a touchscreen or handheld device when playing on a home console with a 70" TV and comfortable and far-more-accurate controller is the superior option. The ONLY opportunity I could see people wanting to play something like this is on a long roadtrip, but then again, we're talking about mature-rated videogames. These shouldn't be marketed or accessible to children, but if you're the adult there's a high chance you're going to be the one driving and incapable of playing the game until you reach the hotel or your destination where, surprise, you can just hook up your actual game console to a TV.

Keep mobile gaming exclusive to fake little casual games like Temple Run and Angry Birds and keep actual videogame IPs like Deus Ex and Halo on consoles and PCs where they belong. If Square-Enix wants to do a project like this so bad, than release the damn game for XBLA and PSN so that it can access it's core audience and actually use a controller where we can have a game with real gameplay.

2. I own an iPhone 5 & I love it but THIS GAME SHOULD ALSO ARRIVE ON ANDROID. I'm tired of this iOS-only crap. Millions of Gamers exist on OTHER mobile platforms too ya know..... (-__-)

@PSYCHOV3N0M Ever heard of this little thing... how do they call it... oh, yes, a 98%-piracy rate on Android, that's what it's called. So yes, there are millions of gamers out there. But unfortunately most of them don't buy anything. I understand  that there's still those honest 2% but no developer can work for such a small audience.

So, they fire the pres cause his ideas royally bombed. But they kept his lackey right hand man that shared his ideals, to think mobile will save the company.

We get a trash game with FF Tactics tacked onto it, and now we got THIS new installment in the series to mobile only.

Too they got into the mobile market so late. Have fun Square! Be sure to sell the Final Fantasy name to a decent company if you can that will actually make a FINAL Final Fantasy to put that series to rest, respectfully, laid to rest for once.

Nice restructuring of all your games you don't see as cost effective! ;3
