Mod's creator serves as project lead for online zombie apocalypse shooter in development by Arma series studio Bohemia Interactive.
The DayZ mod for Arma II is striking out on its own, with development on a stand-alone version of the game announced this morning. Work on the zombie apocalyptic online shooter will be led by Dean "Rocket" Hall, the mod's original creator, and will be developed by Bohemia Interactive, the studio behind the Arma series.
Hall said the new game will follow the "Minecraft development model" on the game's official Tumblr, with rapidly iterated alpha versions available at a significant discount before the game's final launch. Work on the mod will proceed parallel to the game, and it will continue to receive updates and exist on its own website.

How does it feel for your game to go from free mod to priced standalone. This better be dirt cheap!
And im not talking about having to buy arma2 and stuff just to play DayZ.
I know many people who have saved up just to buy arma2 and arrowhead just to play DayZ. I CANT WAIT to tell them that they have to pay MORE money to get DayZ too. LOL!
I personally havent bought Arma 2 and arrowhead cos I dont think DayZ has anything going for it just yet(not enough features that suit my liking).
But I will most probably spend money on the standalone just cos patience has paid off. That is if my friends will bother spending more money on this to play with me and if more features arrive.
OH and.... 60% chance to die from OTHER players? WTF COMON!? Id rather play L4D2.
@TheKiwiMantis Dude, you haven't even played the game but still you talk sh*t about it. If I were you I would reserve judgment until I had played at least a couple of hours. Btw, you don't necessarily die often if you're careful. Comparing it to L4D shows how much you know.
@TheKiwiMantis Whats the difference in spending 60 bucks total on an amazing game that totally rewrites the MMO concept or spending 60 bucks on the latest console release of fps clones. And if that small bit of cash is too much, I'd recommend saving up for Resume' Builder software, not video games.
@TheKiwiMantis What a classic response. "This game is going to suck and anyone who buys it will be stupid! By the way I never played it so I have no clue as to what I'm talking about."
@TheKiwiMantis I admit that even though I think DayZ had every right to go stand-alone, I do regret spending 30 bucks on Arma2 very very much now :P
Its not like I've played DayZ that much to begin with, yet was always waiting for it to grow some more. The 30 bucks were an investment. I invested wrong.
@TheKiwiMantis Quit expecting stuff for free.
** I meant 60% of player deaths are from OTHER players.
Taken off from some DayZ site I cant remember.
@TheKiwiMantis I feel bad if $30 is too much for you to spend on an already great game, just to play another great mod.
If money is an issue at the 10s of dollars range, you might need to think about changing careers.
Alliances and murder would be much more interesting if murder had a real penalty in some way. IRL most (not all obv.) people wouldn't go around killing anyone for loot but instead work together. In Dayz it's just so much easier and lootwise rewarding to kill and loot whatever, which to me made it feel more like a survival team deathmatch.
@PetJel I've only ever seen videos of Dayz, I've never really been interested in the slightest to play arma, maps are way too big. but from just watching the videos I've seen, I agree with everything you said. the game needs a serious penalty for PK'ing. like a 100% damage increase against the pk'er for a in-game week, or something. force people to find stuff instead of kill for it, that n the zombies are too easy methinks.
@PetJel There where so many times I had the jump on people and I just let them be. Never do that..... 10 times out of 10 they would shoot me the second they realized I was there. Even after I could have killed them 10 times already. Do that once or twice and you learn to KOS.
I wouldn't bother playing Day Z until the official games releases. It's turned into an every man for himself kind of game. There's no teamwork and as soon as you're seen people will attack you. What little bit I have played before being killed was great but I hope this is something they will address in the official game release.
@CFritzRun I agree but watch Frankieonpc1080p's DayZ videos, he's nice to absolutely everyone. Hope in DayZ players was returned when i saw his videos
I wanted to play Dayz but i didn't want to buy Arma II, i mean it's an awesome game but i need money for other things like food.
bought operation arrowhead and arma2 just for dayz, but ohwell. its good to see games like these get some serious attention so the kinks can be worked out. glitchy zombies no more!
@amirko28 They Won't. If its made on ARMA 3 engine, which is the most reliable thing they have, they won't do it for consoles. Arma 3 engine is not made for console gaming so.... I guess console gamers are unlucky x3 You still have "Last of Us" :p
DayZ is amazing on it's own =D Lets hope they don't add to much to it, achievements are ok =) just not goals to get achievements, lets not turn this into something it isn't is all I'm saying
Hopefully the game will be free for Arma II and Operation Arrowhead owners, because a lot of people bought those for DayZ.
Mods are awesome, Counter Strike and Team Fortress were mods at first and DAYZ will be the next mod to make it big, with polish DAYZ could be amazing with a story.
Wow, a great achievement for the guy, going from modder to lead on an actual game at the very studio who makes the game he began modding on!
Neat. If Bohemia is branching out into fantasy/sci-fi I wish theyd've nabbed STALKER before Bethsoft.
@GtaVmaster It seems doubtful that consoles (even the new ones) would see DayZ. The Dayz mod already runs on the Arma 2 engine, and the Arma 3 engine (which is just an upgraded version of the arma 2 engine) would be a logical choice for DayZ to use. That engine wasn't designed for consoles, and I would assume that trying to port the engine over (even for new consoles) would be difficult, time intensive, and very costly.

@diabolik_023 To be fair, the game would lose all of its tension and ultimately what makes it fun if other players were not so violent towards each other. It doesn't really take all that long to gather end game materials, and zombies are not really all that difficult to take care of. And once all the items you are looking for in the world are found, there is NOTHING left to do in the game. Players killing players is what makes the game enticing to begin with.
Let me note here: I have NEVER killed another human in the game, not even in self defense. And I have been killed numerous times myself. But that is what makes the game so exciting. Your life is always hanging by a thread, and the REAL threat in the world is not necessarily the zombies...
i have a slight feeling they will use arma 3 engine just because the modder mentioned it on totalhalibuts video of dayz
@ToTs_00 It isn't really all that bad. The engine isn't what is causing many of the bugs, it is the fact that this is a pretty new mod. The actual physics and environment the engine allows for is quite good actually.
Please come to consoles, or next gen PLEASE!!!! I REALLY REALLY want to play this, but Sadly my Laptop cant handle Arma2:( I got an Ancient Laptop, but Im getting one by the end of this year, and hopefully I can play this game. Gosh I REALLY want to play this game.
@zerooo0 Look for Asus laptops. Skip the overpriced BS Alienwares etc.
@zerooo0 Just buy a decent kick ass computer, it can cost as much as a lappy, but you will get far better performance. Half the time, you are paying premium dollars for portability with a lappy. I have a few lappys, but they aren't anything like my gaming rigs.
Cool, now I won't have to buy Arma to play a mod. I've been thinking about getting it just to play DayZ, but they're solving this problem for me! :D
@Pastachip Arma might as well be the mod for Day Z. Most people buy the game for Day Z.

@Gelugon_baat Not saying you feel that way, but -- he knew full well when he was making this that he'd was making something they'd own. :) AT least he got a job out of it, thats what he wanted.
@Gelugon_baat I don't see whats wrong with Bohemia supporting this mod to increase Arma 2 sales.
@Poodger Only partially true. Dean Hall got hired by Bohemia before they even knew he was (secretly) working on DayZ.
@Gelugon_baat The mod IS made by a third-party guy who modded Arma 2. Bohemia saw how successful it was though and hired the guy (Rocket) and gave him resources and manpower to develop Day Z as its own standalone game instead of a mod.
