Crystal Dynamics working on new IP

Tomb Raider developer teases fresh body of work; Lara Croft origin story on schedule for fall bow.

Crystal Dynamics is currently at work on Lara Croft's origin story in the fall-dated Tomb Raider, but that's not all the California company is up to.

Writing on the Square Enix blog recently, Crystal Dynamics community manager Meagan Marie announced that the developer is working on a new intellectual property. Unfortunately, no further specifics were offered.

"2012 will prove to be a very exciting year for Crystal Dynamics, more so than any in recent memory," Marie wrote. "Not only will our team be eating, sleeping, and breathing Tomb Raider, but we'll also be hard at work preparing to reveal exciting new intellectual property to the world."

As for the game Crystal Dynamics is openly working on, Tomb Raider is pegged to arrive on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC this fall. An origin story, the game will tell the tale of how Lara Croft came to be the crafty, nimble adventurer at the center of previous franchise games.

    I've always loved the Tomb Raider games, I was just curious as to where they'd go next. Your answer has just enlightened me!

    As much as I love Legacy of Kain, I think it's better to let that franchise rest. Amy Hennig no longer works at Crystal Dynamics and no one can replace Tony Jay as the Elder God.

    @warhawk-geeby:

    The way Crystal is working, since it's a reboot of the entire series, it's that events in the classic Tomb Raider games and the crystal trilogy never happened. The events of the past games are irrelevant to this one. It's like if this game started a brand new Tomb Raider universe with this being the start of it.

    lets hold off and see if tomb raider lives up to the potential before we get excited for their follow up. I am hoping it does, the platformer with some shooting is my fav type of game. Uncharted brought this genre properly into the current gen, heres hoping Tomb Raider can show Lara still has it too.

    I'm just wondering where they're going to go after this one?

    Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation was almost the background to her story - especially since you started the game playing as a child. But if this one is obviously set after that, but before the other games then I'm definitely confused.

    The game looks good I won't deny that, but I'm not entirely convinced the development team themselves know where they're going with this

    I'm not saying they're milking it, because they aren't. But I can't help feel a little negative as to how the story will progress..?

    @Neo_Sarevok

    Thanks
    RE: Square-Enix and FFVII ive researched the idea of them making the remake and SE have replied that it "would cost way too much to remake FFVII" and frankly in order to do it justice they would need the original creators to work on that, which they no longer have working for them. And i think you are helping me make my point by mentioning thier intention to have a FF13-III. If you look at FFXIII-2's low sales, (one third of the sales made by FFXIII's 1st week and all the other FF's that sold around 2 million in thier 1st week) the japanese public are telling SE to get real, or maybe more bluntly that they are no longer trusted to deliver. Which further supports my use of them as an example.

    Only time will tell if SE can come out of this by putting in an effort and making better choices for who they lead future FF's. But the failures of FF11, 13, 14 and by the looks of things 13-2 certainly paint only one picture however you decide to look at it.

    "And from 1999 to 2003 Crystal Dynamics made 4 Legacy of Kain games."
    4 games in 5 years, that's milking sir. Just look at Capcom.......

    "You could just as easily yell at Ubisoft for milking Assassin's Creed. Has THAT story ever had a definitive ending? Nope. Who's complaining about it? Almost nobody."
    You need to read more comments about those games then......

    Nintendo "milks" their best franchises the right way. One on the console, then another on the handheld. Wait two years, then rinse and repeat. In between those two years, make another game using the same character, but put it in a different format. They give us a Mario kart type of game versus a platformer, a Zelda Four swords type game, then a dungeon based game. Rinse and repeat, and repeat, and repeat......

    Not trying to call you out or anything like that, but you have to admit it's gotten worse in the past few years. There is a difference in milking a franchise and milking a character. Just look at Microsoft and Halo.......

    @ Banefire76 I agree with everything you said, except the Square-Enix part. If Square-Enix really wanted to chase profits, they'd give the fans the true Final Fantasy VII sequel (or HD remake) they've been wanting, but instead, they avoid this. Ironically, they're now planning a FF XIII-III (for real). Square Enix needs to listen to their fanbase more.

    There is a difference to "milking" a series and "continuing" a series. It used to be that a game company designs a brand new ip, they are successful because its a good series so they make more - continues to be a good series and fans love it.

    But something happened

    The new owners create another game under the label, sells heaps but the game doesnt feel right, it lacks the story/quality etc. and fans lose faith but still buy the next game and hope for the best.

    Why did i spend so much time saying the above?

    Because i think gamers are realising that the gaming industry has been slowly changing from pure game creation to blatent profit chasing by trying to make a more "marketable" product instead of sticking to the story and integrity which gave the series the popularity/sales that attracted the new owners to the label in the 1st place.

    Case-in-piont - SQUARE-ENIX Look at the history of the games it owns and see the deterioration of a game series they aquired. Im sure you all know of other companies who are guilty of this.

    Best way to get back at these lowlifes?

    DONT preorder anything they release and wait for the reviews 1st. Thier drop in sales is where u can hurt them. because a crappy game that makes alot of sales from preorders is still considered a success, thats why.

    Make a real stand before the game sells instead of just complaining about it after the company makes a mint.

    @SovietsUnited And from 1999 to 2003 Crystal Dynamics made 4 Legacy of Kain games. That's not "milking"? Would you like them to go back to milking Legacy of Kain "every year," by which I mean every 2 or 3 because that's how often Tomb Raider IS getting milked now? I'm pretty sure I'm not denying the obvious; I think you are. It's not that I don't think Tomb Raider is getting milked; it's that you claimed they were doing it EVERY YEAR. It's NOT happening every year, so I'm calling you on that inaccuracy.

    You could just as easily yell at Ubisoft for milking Assassin's Creed. Has THAT story ever had a definitive ending? Nope. Who's complaining about it? Almost nobody.

    EVERYBODY milks their licenses. The day they stop is the day the industry dies. (Yes, I just said that.) And one more thing: your "original argument" was "They ignore Legacy of Kain again for a new IP. Die in fire Crystal Dynamics." That's not an argument; that's absurd, unspecific, useless trolling.

    Rebooting Legacy of Kain would have been much more welcome for me as well.

    I really hate how they made her look in this new game. Her former appearances were okay; yes, too top heavy, but big breasts are hardly the devil, and at least she didn't have that petrified upper lip thing that happens with bad collagen (and if this is modeled after a real woman it would explain a lot about her odd new look).

    Most importantly, the less Square has it's finger in this the better. Sure she looks messed up, but she's not wearing wild clothing or looks like an Asian pop singer in a pink wig.... yet.

    The Uncharted series is pretty much a mix of Tomb Raider and Indiana Jones, but I always felt like the games were better than their inspiration (Tomb Raider, not Indy. Raiders till I sleep). Now, with this new relaunch, it looks like CD is taking a few pages out of Naughty Dog's book, and I think that's awesome and rather fitting how it all came full circle like. Lara 2.0 is looking like a fantastic game from everything I've seen and I cannot wait to reacquaint myself with the series. It's been a minute since I played with Lara (yes, cheap shot, but worth it imo).

    @cachinscythe
    Don't be a dumbass.

    It is milking, from 2005 to 2012 everything so far has been TOMB RAIDER.
    Out of that 1 revamp, 1 spin-off, 1 "restart". Only two games are related storywise.

    And what's that compared to 9 years of waiting for possibly the greatest VG storyline of all time to finish ? They're just milking a well-known licence, it couldn't be more obvious.

    And what does this all have to do with my initial argument ? You're just denying the obvious.

  • cachinscythe

    @SovietsUnited Um...I'm sorry but when was the last Tomb Raider game released? Let's see...November 18, 2008. And what is the date today?...Oh that's right. It's the start of 2012. How many years passed between 2008 and 2012?

    We do NOT have a "Tomb Raider MILK" every year good sir. You are spouting a cliched line that no longer fits the industry except in instances like Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty. Sure, if you want to count Guardian of Light then we're talking since 2010 instead of 2008, but that's still 2 years, not 1.

    Not to be rude, but please get your facts straight.

    Developers create sequels. Everyone complains.
    Developers create new IPs. Everyone complains.

    If developers actually listened to the garbage on all these forums, they would have packed it in and quit a long time ago. The closed-mindedness and cynicism--coupled with the utter blindness that leads to calling OTHERS who simply disagree "cynical and closed-minded"--should be enough to drive anyone crazy.

    Thank god they haven't given up in the face of such blatant hypocrisy.
