Crysis 2 PS3, 360, PC-bound
E3 2009: Hours before its press event, Electronic Arts announces that German developer Crytek is finally bringing its cutting-edge graphics shooter series to consoles.
LOS ANGELES--After years of hints and tech-demo teases, the Crysis series is finally headed to consoles. This morning, Electronic Arts and German developer Crytek announced the development of Crysis 2 for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. The game will be the first console title that the notoriously PC-centric studio will develop directly for consoles, having let Ubisoft develop the console spin-offs for its groundbreaking 2004 first-person shooter Far Cry. Ubisoft bought the Far Cry IP outright in 2006. No release date was given.
"The development of Crysis 2 marks a major stepping stone for our studio," said Crytek CEO and President Cevat Yerli in a statement. "This is not only the next game in the Crysis franchise, it's the first title we are developing for consoles and the first title being built on CryEngine 3." In March, the CryEngine3 was shown off on the 360 and PS3 to Game Developers Conference attendees.
As part of today's announcement, EA and Crytek also announced that they were extending their strategic partnership forged in 2004. The deal came shortly after Far Cry became both a critical and commercial hit on the PC for Ubisoft, which EA still owns one fifth of. The deal is part of the EA Partners program, which lets developers pick and choose marketing, sales, and development-support services from the megapublisher. Current EA Partners and games include Harmonix (Rock Band), Valve (The Orange Box and Left 4 Dead), Grasshopper Manufacture (Unnamed PC/PS3/360/Wii project), and Epic Games (Untitled People Can Fly Project).

Crysis 2 is amazing on the consoles. Well worth thewait. Best shooter I've played since Half Life 2.
CRYSIS 2 FTW!
will my PC be able to run that........... LMAO
@Nobri Is it a bad idea because more gamers will get to experience Crysis 2?
Finally I can experience Crysis. Woot!
hopefully they don't f**k the PC version by just giving us a crappy port from the consoles with no real optimizations. seen that happen quite a few times
i can understand that they want to maximise sales and im all for them making a healthy profit. it means they get to make more awesome games in the future and thats great. i just hope that if the console sales figures do dominate the PC numbers, they dont neglect the PC gamers in future projects. undoubtably, most doomsayers are overeacting on the issue of PC gaming decline, but there is enough of a trend to suggest developers are forsaking PC games in favour of consoles.
given that crysis still brings top pc's to their knees They have got some serious optimizations to do. Of course it simply cant be as good looking as the pc version on highest settings but even at a notch or 2 down it will still look great!! Let hope the pc version doesnt suffer for it tho,
I love my PS3, but bringing the best looking game ever to consoles is just a bad idea...
Wtf so Crysis 2 is for the ps3 but not crysis 1???
Will it support Windows 7?
With DX11 Coming Out And This Game For Consoles we will see a very bad game (not bad but not as good as the older ones) :(
I have this on PC and man let me tell u it is a real master piece consle gamer will get a kick out of this game...if they can get crysis 2 to look as good as crysis on the PC.
No, the game is supposed to be the best on each plataform. I just hope CE3 looks as good as CE2.
So long as they don't pull back the PC graphics just so it can run on consoles i'm happy.
Hey I have always been a pc gamer but I'm happy that people will get to play Crysis on consoles. I just hope they don't rush the game. It's pretty obvious that the PC version will look way better than the console versions, but you will need a good PC to run it on max. I hope they go back to the shaders on Crysis because the ones on Warhead were over saturated.
Redemption80 : It doesnt look better on consoles. There is a comprasion video that shows how Crysis 1 is far better at highest settings than the console version of Crysis 2.
Wow, yet again totally ashamed to call myself a PC gamer. So many of you acting like spoiled kids, cause your neighbour got the same toy that you had been rubbin his face in, come on get a grip. As for Crysis being dumbed down, it was already dumb, as was the original Fear, and just about every other video game out there, cause well thats what they are supposed to be. ErazemZ, system ram has alot to do with graphics, when the video card runs out, the system ram takes over, as it has to, yes its slower, but it still uses it Crysis uses about 1.5gb of my system ram when i checked it there. Try to do a bit of research before calling people retards, and making yourself look silly. And the 360/PS3 footage of CryEngine3 looks as good if not better than the original Crysis, but we will wait to see if this ends up true in reality.
Ah well, all good things end up on consoles!
@all the retards like mouthforbathory!!! RAM has nothing WHATSOEVER to do with graphics!!! The graphics cards utilize their own GRAM, because the RAM you have on your mobo is WAY to slow. (just for example: the pci-e has 16gb/s bandwith, while your average ram only has 125mb/s r/w (reed/write) speed) So 4gb's of ram won't help you up your graphics performance. It affects other things, but not graphics!!! (All that assuming you don't have internal graphics accelration :d )
Gorfix ......the only console i have is PS3...but, i also have a pc...(like 90% of the population) and have played and beaten crysis and know the story....why does it even matter that gamers get to play crysis? don't you want to share the greatness of this game?
WHy make it for Consle??? this is a killer PC game theese ppl wont even know the story of the game it should stick to PC. {I am sooooo buying it} graphics are sweet with PC
You don't know that! hell maybe it'll be mind blowing across the board
haha i knew it ,what a sell out.instead of improving everything for the pc version they are gonna take advantage of the first crysis and make a dozen of millions from the console where all the money is. its all about money falks
backstabbing bastards
The game that bush your PC to the limits, can't wait :)
SSBFan12 LOL! disappointed that it's not coming to Wii?
I can't believe that the consoles are going to get Crysis.
Good to hear that the consoles will get the opportunity to experience the Crysis series.
@athenian29 Can't pirate console games? ha thats a good joke. Half my friends have their Xbox's modded for just that purpose and 90% of PS3 owners I know have theirs modded as well... Pirating is everywhere... Sucks, but its true.
I really don't see the GPU and CPU being an issue, though the GPUs in either console would really be capable of handling just right above medium specs at 1280 x 720, makes sense considering decently ported multiplatform games play as well as their console versions at that resolution on a desktop 8600GT which in turn is a good enough card for stable FPS at medium specs with Crysis, so I think it's a fair comparison especially considering the 360's graphics system.
For the hell of it I tried Crysis out at minimum specs in DX9 mode and even at 800 x 600 resolution(!) just to get a possible idea of how much RAM it'll consume and while I'm sure it'll use more than it really needs because there is plenty of RAM to eat, it's usage of 1,025 MB out of 4096 MB (4 GB for those of you who can't translate) is pretty staggering for just minimum specs, even with Vista x64. I originally played Crysis on the WinXP desktop I built myself a while back, and it's minimum usage was in the same area, and that system had 2 GB of DDR2. On my old WinXP system, and my current Vista x64 laptop which I play my games on now, Crysis at DX9 minimum specs likes to use just under 1 GB of system RAM to be comfortable, at high settings, you're looking at another 0.25 GB and even more as you increase the graphics settings in DX10 mode. So even if it was using half a gig of SRAM, you're still looking at a huge challenge just getting straight up Crysis running with minimum settings on one of these consoles, but I'm sure you guys would want decent shaders and textures (though I do admit, the textures at minimum settings are pretty good compared to other current games).
Now with PC games, all data that is going to be used in a level will typically be loaded at once into the system RAM. Any data that will go into VRAM is copied directly off there so whatever is in VRAM has duplicated data in the system RAM. On a console, notably the PS3 where you have a split pool of VRAM (256 MB of GDDR3) and a seperate pool of system RAM (256 MB of XDRRAM), and they are made to function as to not mirror data, the SRAM will have visual assets not in use as well as other assets needed like AI, sound, game code, etc. Soooooooooo on a PC we could actually forget about how much VRAM is being used since the data on VRAM is just a duplicate of data that's already on the system RAM, and use that as our RAM needs when translating the possible system resource management needs to probably being at least 768 MB for Crysis, and the rest for WinXP or Vista.
@RADIUM-V Actually I was referring to Crysis being ran in DX9 mode on Windows XP. The 450 MB I mentioned was the VRAM loading, not the system RAM loading which represents all the visual data in use at that moment - the stored frame. Sure CE3 could be console optimized but that doesn't mean Crytek can get the same performance or be able to have such a large environment. There will have to be compromises somewhere in the pipeline to be made. Back to RAM loading......Crysis requires 1.0 GB of RAM for Windows XP, and 1.5 GB of RAM to run on Windows Vista, the extra 0.5 necessary due to Vista's needs (obviously) and I'm getting this straight off the box, and Steam confirms it too. Either way they need a 256 MB equiped video card as well. Windows XP with minimal background tasks "requires" 128 MB of RAM so we can make the overdrastic assumption that WinXP will be using 128 - 256 MB of that 1.0 GB, leaving at least .75 GB of SRAM and that's just for minimum requirements. Vista needing that extra 0.5 GB of SRAM only helps to confirm the trend. For minimum graphics settings, that's alot of system RAM.
this is the best news ive heard all yr!,finished crysis loved every second of it the graphics gameplay and physics were Gamegasmic! XD and a new optimized engine wont mean i have tweak the crap out of the game to look ultra on high performance :D and would it come with crysis wars 2?
Sweet, can't wait for this. I had Crysis for my laptop, but I'm afraid if I play it too much it will fry the CPU or something. Now that it's coming to 360, I'll only have to worry about the red ring! :)
---------------------------- --- For Superior Gaming Experience. --- PC Gaming Now and Forever !. ----------------------------
@mouthforbathory The only difference between a PC and a console is that a PC requires Windows to be running in the background (which Vista requires 512mb of RAM and 32mb VRAM bare minimum, so you can throw those numbers out of your equation). And Crysis 2 will be using the Cry Engine 3, which is written and optimized for current-gen consoles. Do your Google before spouting stuff.
To Wolfie600: Given the level size and structure of the original Crysis, the best that the consoles could probably manage is medium settings due to the rediculous amounts of texture code that would needed to be stored in VRAM, and the system RAM to back it up. Crysis requires 256 MB of VRAM minimum just to run on minimum specs. You want to know how much VRAM Crysis uses on my laptop in all high settings in DX9 mode? Over 450 MB @ 1280 x 720 resolution. That's just the current rendered frame, which means there would be only 70 MB or so left on a console for game code, sound, etc. and no room to buffer out graphics code in use with graphics code that's going to be needed. Simply put there isn't enough room for such sustained levels of graphics on the either the PS3 or 360, so something will have to give: probably texture quality + geometry quality or more likely level design that allows modular level loading which would pretty much destroy the proper Crysis experience And even still the fillrates of the Xenos and RSX would probably allow medium specs at best considering that's the optimal settings for the Nvidia 8600GT, which spec and real world wise is the closest approximation to the console's GPUs. "Well the Cell can help out, blah blah blah, and we haven't hit the console's max graphics!" yeah the Cell and even the Xenon can do graphics assistance but even combined with their respective GPUs they may reach 60% of what an 8800GT graphics card could do even with optimizations, because Crysis and especially Crysis Warhead are extraordinarily optimized for PC graphics processors, especially unified shader GPUs.
gamespot cut of half of my post and now its gone. Then, after retyping the post, I got a 404 Error and had to type this again. Awesome gamespot. Thanks. Regardless, Crysis 2 will probably be very optimized, but since its being ported this time, the quality might be a bit degraded this time around... :(
scijax you are saying that the graphics in consoles will look the same in the computer with medium specs? wow.. you are dumb as hell. Consoles havent been exploited to their max graphics wise kid. Crytec engine 3 is going to look awesome on the Xbox and Ps3.
alllll of you winers!!!!!!! i made my pc for $$$$667 do you understand what i said $667 dolllarrrrsssss i run crysis 1(thats right 1) on the very high maxed out at alllll times except i have to turn anti-aliasing down, and its not like that bothers me. game still looks f*cking incredible. you nutbags dissapoint me! you will be able to run cryengine 3 on a $100 graphics card no problem, as long as its 1gb and you got 4gb of ram to back you up. so suck my left.....() and savor every moment ill never get a ps3 or 360 neither do i care.
This game shouldn't be on the consoles. Why? Because it'll have to be built with console limitations in mind, unless Crytek commits to making the PC version the true vision without the same limitations on the environment, physics interactivity, and overall fidelity the consoles are limited to. But no doubt the PC version graphics will be better than what we saw in Warhead. The console versions will probably be equivalent to medium settings in the original Crysis when it comes to graphics. Everyone with a proper PC that is as powerful as an Xbox 360 (dual core, 2-4 GB of RAM, 8600GT or better graphics card) should get it on PC and not on consoles because the consoles only hold us back and are moving us into directions like cows are moved into pens. That's why I don't like them anymore. Yes, there is cool software for them, but they are controlled machines, the developers have to consider and follow protocols to satiate Nintendo, Sony, or MS's desires instead of developing for their own motives. Honestly I think every PC developer should abandon Direct X and use OpenGL, then games could be much more easily developed to run on not only Windows, but quite easily for Mac and Linux OSs. It's a large market that hasn't been truly tapped. I will admit Direct X is superior to OpenGL, but any potential quality is more reliant on a good developer, not a good rendering API created by a company that now is essentially trying to destroy the haven of PC gaming.
awesomeeeee crysis 2
This game will be awesome on the PC!!!
woohoo cant wiat, cryis 1 was incredible
Trust me If I did have a PC capable of running it at it's highest settings I WOULD buy the PC version, but I simply don't therefore I'll be getting the PS3 version
um orwell james, Crysis was optimized for the PC, if one happens to have a computer capable of running at even medium, it will still look better than on console. However, Crysis on maximum graphics will blow both PS3 and the slightly weaker 360 out of the water. Crysis 2 will be the same way. While Crysis 2 on consoles will look very nice and spiffy, it will look better on a computer running it above medium
Meh. PC = teh pwns. Just kidding. Seriously, though, PC games are usually better - RTS, FPS, RPG... You just get more buttons, and with all the really popular games like that, you get more on a keyboard. And mouse aiming is unequivocally superior to a joystick 11 times out of 10. *abrupt subject change* Do the right thing and don't pirate. That's why Crytek is going multiplatform in the first place - to minimize piracy losses. You can't pirate console games.
Considering Crysis was so poorly optimized on the PC, and Crytek's inexperience with the consoles, I very much doubt that this game's graphics will hit the already high threshold for console gaming. Up until now, the hype surrounding the series has derived largely from the fact that it was built specifically for the PC, and took advantage of the theoretically infinite resources you can get on a PC. Meanwhile, on computers that couldn't take advantage of its highest settings, it looked worse than other games. Hopefully Crytek realizes this, but I can't help but think that this limiting factor is going to reveal their limited prowess in optimizing graphics, especially on the PS3.
