This guy has got to be smoking crack! My family has all the IPad, IPhones etc. and they almost never get used for gaming except by the wife who likes the simple card games and puzzle games. Other than that, the boys and I exclusively play on the consoles whenever possible. Only time I use my phone or IPad is for quick surfing and a few other necessary tasks, but not for gaming. Nothing about a tablet begs for you to pick it up and play from lack of good controls, shallow less than complete gameplay compared to their big brother on consoles, and one of the biggest drawbacks, the rather tiny screen whether IPad or phone when gaming really immerses you when on a big screen!
CEO Cevat Yerli says the longer the wait is for next-gen consoles, the more likely it is tablets will take over as users' first gaming option, believes future platforms "overdue."
If the current-generation console cycle becomes further protracted, tablets might take over as users' first gaming option, according to Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli. Speaking to VG247, the executive said next-generation consoles are "overdue already."
"The current generations are drying out, and the longer we wait for the next generation of consoles, the higher the likelihood that they could fall behind tablets in terms of being the first thing people reach for when the time comes to play games," Yerli said. "Tablets are putting pressure on the gaming industry, and taking over in some ways, so that should be kept in mind."
"At this stage, we can't comment on or even speculate as to when, or if, the next generation will be announced. But we think that it's time for the next generation and we think that it's overdue already," he said.
Nintendo will be the first of the Big Three (Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo) to enter the next-generation market with the release of the Wii U this holiday season. The Xbox 360 is closing in on seven full years of availability, with the PlayStation 3 nearing its sixth anniversary. Analysts believe new consoles from Microsoft and Sony will be on store shelves for holiday 2013. As for their capabilities, GameStop CEO Paul Raines said last month that these consoles will provide "unbelievable new capabilities for rendering, speeds, et cetera."
No way this will happen. I have iPad, iPhone Galaxy S2, 3DS, Vita, Ps3, 360 and there is no chance i will replace my gaming using tablet. Tablet may have some cute little games but if your a gamer you will never get the same experience that real key's and dual analog stick will offer. I specially love my Vita. Games look amazing and the touch + controls are just great. Soon with all the new games from GamesCon it will rule.
???? ahh...adventure games.. ?sierra, lucas arts. Adventure games have been around for 40 years . phantasmagoria was one of my favorite eventhough it was not that popular. i would love to see them on tablets. but tablets usual?ly have childish nintendo3ds and boring games like angry birds, plant vszombie, animal crossing etc... Gabriel knight and indiana jones and all adventure games can change the tablet market. i own an android tablet but waiting for a new tablet for the future
hmmmm, well maybe if point n click adventure games make a major resurgence, a tablet could be what I game on more... That's only if Monkey Island, Broken Sword, Sam & Max.etc all come out with extensive new instalments or something
This old thing again. If portable gaming was going to overtake consoles it would have done it years ago. A tablet or smartphone will never replace my console or my PC as my primary gaming device.
COD ,Brothers in Arms, Black OPS,Medal of honor and so many more .. all we do is destroy those "NAZIS". well i am tired of it. before the new(and now very old) consoles we used to have more fun games.I miss the good ol days where games used to be just for fun. Nowadays, all we have is bloody games .Blood and violence are the main theme of todays consoles . tablets are better becuase it for fun and it reminds me of the GOOD OLD DAYS.
Dont you miss those days or do you like todays games more ? lets be honest
Crytek seem to be so getting desperate for news of next-gen consoles, they'll say just about anything no matter how silly it sounds.
Really !? Tablets > Consoles ? Can a tablet play a game like MGS4 , Uncharted or Gears Of War ? Even if it could , you will need to charge the tablet every 10 mins. You don't deserve your CEO post sir.
Ahhh yes, very wise and philosophical Mr. "analyst", I can't wait until the day I can throw out my ps4 console with state of the art graphics, full of mind-blowing game mechanics to play Plants vs Zombies for a couple of minutes on my Ipad!
And more crap being spewed from Crytek yet again, the same people who thinks most of us want Crysis 3 and think Timesplitters 4 should be canned and instead put Crytek UK to work on Homefront 2.
Who even listens to these guys, all they do is blow smoke on a continual basis since they got some recognition as a developer in the past few years.
What blows me away is the negativity. We, as gamers don't want a viable mobile platform to play great games on? Are you guys insane? I for one, would love to be able to take Skyrim with me on the train or plane. And when I get back home, I would LOVE to be able to wirelessly synch my tablet with my tv and surround sound to CONTINUE playing my Skyrim game. Would I 'love' to try to play Skyrim on a current tablet with touch controls? Hell no. But given the right technology and time, it's GOING to be the top dog. Sure, Angry Birds doesn't hold a stone to games like Heavy Rain, GTA, Skyrim, or a plethora of popular games that require some power. But, technology WILL get better. This WILL be the superior platform in a few years. Plus, as a develepor; would you rather invest three times the money and work into porting your 360 game into a PC and PS3 and WiiU when you could just make one dominant game on your tablet?
I don't think tablets will overtake consoles, many people don't even own tablets. Personally, I would prefer my gaming on a console over a tablet any day of the week. Tablets aren't for everyone, and especially for gaming they just aren't right.
There will always be a place for consoles, tablets can go suck motor oil.
I agree that new consoles are overdue, but tablets are $#!% for gaming. i for one will never buy a tablet intended for gaming.
Consoles are long overdue. They need to come out with new consoles really soon or become obsolete. Casual gamers are flocking to tablets and phones for gaming. Consoles will be left in the dust and will struggle to acquire sales as the hardcore crowd is a small fraction of the gaming market.
Fortunately PC's will still have appeal, as you can do so much more than game/entertainment on them and there's loads of casual and hardcore games made for them under at least 3 OS's and card readers can transfer data to and from PC - mobile devices.
It's like saying, "If we don't hurry up and make better cars, the push-scooter industry is going to take over the automobile industry!"
Obvs these guys have no clue what's going on.
@TriumphantToad oh are you a developer? do you have large amount of capital riding on new software? do you have teams dedicated to study trends and market changes??? now let me enlighten you
as a gamer since the days snes up to now. in recent years lets say the last two other than major block busters there has not been one game that caused me personally much hype. I don't play any cod or battlefield but I don't knock them just look at there success. furtheremore look at all the major studios porting games to the mobile market. even better how many of these publisher/corporations have not open a studio solely for mobile apps and games. I only use my ps3 for netflix and the ps store to buy classic games for my kids. my xbox360 has not been use after the third time i got the rrod and when i got my system back the ethernet port was dead. as for the wii well we just use it for netflix and the little ones play mario. I have been on my cell playing drag racing I find it funny how i rather play that than my ps3...so yeah someone is going to make a monster of a tablet to play more "hardcore" games with ease of use. heck i saw a coworker play a shooter on his phone that played just like cod and looked amazing.
@TriumphantToad Nah, it's really just Crytek. They'll die out soon enough.
Crytek is right but stricktly in terms of graphics. Touch / tilt controls suck and I'd much rather play on my TV!
I've played on a Vita before and the controls do indeed suck= in my opinion. It never felt comfortable or natural, shooters especially.
@Tidal_Abyss ...even with the two dual analog sticks? That's sad. Do you play with a console or PC normally though? If it sucks on a Vita it has to be even worse on a tablet : S!
@Getbacktogaming until a bluetooth controller comes out for standard android tablets..... then in two or three years when they can cram tiny gpus with mega power that CAN handle games like crysis.....it only makes sense that tablets will come out on top
@camyers1310 ...I do hope that before 2-3 years the new generation of consoles will be here! (and I'm not talking about the Wii U) Mind you buying a third party bluetooth controller makes everything more complicated in terms of hardware/software compatibility and then isn't the point of a tablet to be portable? Can't wait for next gen!
LOL HAHAHAHAHAHAH I'm sorry, but consoles wont ever fall behind a tablet or a handheld. That's just not something that would happen. Nobody replaces their home gaming with gaming they do on a crappy tablet. That's just not ideal. When I kick back and play gears of war on my xbox, even if I could get the same game on a tablet, I wouldn't... because it's not the same experience. Sorry dude, crytek makes good games, but this is just hilarious lololol
This guy must be the most idiotic person in the gaming industry. How the hell can consoles be behind tablets? A tablet cant even run GTA or Battlefield like games. Leave your CEO post and go work on tablets game , we'll see whos behind.
What this headline should be is 'Console Makers Among Those Caught Behind the Technology/Education Curve.' When a tablet has flexibility and a console doesn't, people are bound to figure it out sometime...I realize that doesn't explain why Mac users haven't gone to PC, but the words 'elitism' and 'laziness' do.
The mobile market is crap. It's full of social media chewed out for people who just want a quick 5 minute gaming "break". You might find a rare game here and there but they will always fall short on content. I'll never shell out a damned cent for such a decrepit gaming platform. Crytek thinks tablets are "taking over" the industry, but the truth is that there's simply a never-ending supply of gullible, tasteless customers.
An Apple or android or win8 tablet wont take over the console any time soon, because every one should remember this that console - ps/xbox/Nintendo has the best exclusive in the market and gamer will never get it from a tablet. to be very precise console are the only device that has4 split screen with we will never find in table, even if we do it would be really small and plus u wont be able to play games like cod on it !!! until the console manufacturer (sony,M$,Nintendo ) planing to make dedicated gaming table , then we can see some really cool AAA game form 1st,2nd,3rd party developer !!! sony has tried it with vita and still is not successful due to it lake of game which include the low price games and ever few software apps !!!
@hesoyamdon Oh, please. As if Call of Duty was a console's strong point. I would only use my PS3 for stuff like MGS4/Uncharted/The Last of Us/RDR
@Henrique2324 dude COD was just an example!!! and for kind information cod is the highest sold ps3/xbox360/games of all time, console might not be good as pc version, but there a lot gamers who i know who bought cod for 4 split screen option. MGS4 - uncharted - god od war 3 and other ps3 exclusive games can even be compared to any 3rd party games, ps3 exclusive is the next level in the gaming industry !!! maybe should be compared next gen 3rd party games !!!
@Henrique2324 at the same time, ones taste can be taken into consideration. One man's trash is another man's garbage.
Honestly so low your going for the calling out on grammar, shows really how little an arguement you have but hesoyamdon has a point in terms of splitscreen, tablets wont cut it, tekken would be a nightmare on a tablet unless you had 2 units.
@hesoyamdon Justin Bieber sells a lot. It doesn't make him any less crappy. But I think you should make a conscious effort to improve your grammar. It might just net you a lot of flames.
Hmm. I believe this prediction applies more towards the smaller, downloadable games and the casual gamers than the hardcore lot. As such this might be something more for Nintendo or the handheld market to fear, but not so much Sony or Microsoft. Also, of course things are catching up to the PS3 and 360. They're 6 and 7 years old now, respectively (older if you count development time) so feasibly a smartphone might come out tomorrow that's on par with them. However the next gen consoles are right around the corner and those gamers that are dedicated to console play aren't going to be satisfied with playing the bigger titles on a tablet or the tablet version of said games. I'm sure soon you'll be able to attach all kinds of tablets to HD displays but the resolution for a game will most likely be crap once it's been expanded, not to mention the loss of quality on the audio side. A ton of games rely heavily on quality sound to help craft the playthrough experience (the Dead Space series comes to mind). I don't know about everyone else but I'm spoiled. Surroundsound is one of the best components in gaming to me and the absence of it would seriously detract from atmospheric games, cinematic games and shooters. I just think too much would be missing from the equation on the tablet side to really give the next gen consoles a serious run. Nintendo and handhelds yes, PS4 and 720 probably not.
I kind of thought about this though when I saw the Surface Pro's specs. That thing has the specs of an ultra book and a USB port you can plug a controller into. How long until a tablet comes out with some serious specs and wireless controller support? The console life cycle is extending, and tablet hardware is improving at an exponential rate. I could easily see the latter catching up to the former.
Razer already has a 'PC gaming tablet' running on an Intel Core i7 and other nicer than console specs.
1. Developer says something thoughtful about the future of interactive entertainment
2. A story is posted on Gamespot about it
3. People get unnecessarily angry
?????Here's an idea, instead of talking nonsense and saying dumb stuff like " consoles falling behind tablets" why dont u work on improving ur lame AI which got me really disappointed with Crysis 2 .... and from the Crysis 3 demos and gameplays that i have witnessed I feel safe in saying that the AI is still as dumb as ever.
I loved Crysis and Warhead, then Crysis 2 came out and was meh but I gave it the benefit of the doubt because I actually liked Cevat Yerli...now I think he's a *%$#&%* idiot and I will most likely not be buying Crysis 3 for fear of giving him more money.
All he has been doing lately is spewing his filth about tablets because his overlords (EA) are making him. Maybe he actually does believe that crap that spills from his mouth, if so, then he's even dumber than I thought.
Tablets will never out do consoles. I would rather play a video game on my 1080p native resolution Plasma (please don't argue about what is native resolution or if plasma or lcd is better I used to sell these things) with surround sound and a hell of a bass rather than a tiny tablet with tiny speakers and maybe 720p or even if it's piped to my tv, the crappy 720p signal and the crappy sound that gets piped with it.
I'll stick to consoles thank you.
